In fact, there was NOT really a rigid timetable according to which women mandatorily changed clothes many times a day (you seem to be confusing the early 19th century with the Edwardian period, almost 100 years later) -- though most middle- and upper-class men AND women did change clothes before the evening meal (unless dining rather informally with a few close family members or intimate same-sex friends only). And the dampened gown thing was almost certainly a pure urban myth, as far as 99.99% of women at the time... Churchh 20:54, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
