Asma Hilali - Sana'a Pallimpsest

With reference to the below.
My copy of Asma Hilali did eventually come; but I held off editing the article until I had some indication of its critical reception. Just as Sadeghi and Goudarzi spend a lot of the footnotes in their version criticizing Elizabeth Puin; so Hilali is very critical throughout her edition, of the sholarship of Sadeghi and Gourdarzi. In simple terms she regards the surviving evidence of the undertext as insufficient to justify many of S&G's reconstructions; including all those where S&G find parallels with reported readings in the 'companion codex' of ibn Masud. Sadeghi has posted on social media, maintaining that his readings can be seen in the released high resolution photographs (which you can now download). The issue seems not to be what can be seen in the piccies though, but whether Sadeghi is justified in reconstructing a whole phrase as being in conformity with ibn Masud, when he has only a couple of letters of one word to go on.
However at the end of last year, Asma Hilali and Alba Fedeli chaired a round table discussion at the Institute of Ismaili Studies: http://iis.ac.uk/events/approaching-religious-texts-early-islam-sanaa-qur-palimpsest-example-0 I am inclined to treat this as confirming the academic standing of the new publication; and have since been successively re-editing the page to take this into account. Plus the notice on the Sana'a Palimpsest in Deroche "Qur'ans of the Umayyads'. Some opposition to this from the usual quarters; but you are more than welcome to pitch in; either to amend or extend what I have done. TomHennell (talk) 15:14, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
- Nope; sorry. OUP have put back the publication date (yet again), to 18th May 2017. I will post here when I receive my copy.
