Javanese vs. Chinese junk

Hello Verosaurus. I was wondering about this edit over on List of Indonesian inventions and discoveries. Are you sure that Djong (ship) wouldn't be a better wikilink? It's the specifically Indonesian version of the ship, whereas the Junk (ship) is the more general version not specific to Indonesia. MezzoMezzo (talk) 06:19, 1 July 2018 (UTC)

@MezzoMezzo: Actually, the general "junk" ship itself was invented by Malay people (I am referring the ethnic, not the country). This is agreed by historians namely P.Y Manguin, Robert Dick-Read, Anthony Reid, Joachim Schliesinger, R. A. Donkin, Qin Dashu, Yuan Jian, and few others which I cannot remember. The word "junk" itself came from Malay (specifically Javanese) word Jong/Djong, recorded from Javanese 9th century inscription. Malay people already sailed to Chinese ports since 1st century. Before 9th century, the Chinese have not yet mastered building ocean going ships, in the Song dinasty (started 960 A.D.) they are starting to employ Malay shipbuilder to design their own ships. Even to the 19th century, Chinese word for ship is not something sounded similarly to "junk", instead they call their ship "chuan". Southern dialect, however, directly influenced by Malay sailor so there are some words similar to "junk". But still, they call their own ship as "chuan". One of the aforementioned historian even said that the term junk itself only refer to Chinese ships after 17th century, when production of real "junk" (the Malay one) stopped.

I created the "Djong" page to make it's own dedicated page, because the information is too much to be included in page "Junk (ship)". As for the definition of Junk in the wikipedia : "Junk is a type of ancient Chinese sailing ship..." it is misleading. The creator of the page is pro-Chinese (no racist or politics intended here). Hi I’m just reviewing Apilan and kota mara. I’m wondering why you decided to create an article about two separate terms, and whether splitting this into two articles might make sense. Hi, I just realized that I, in fact, can still reply here. I was unresponsive for a long time because I can’t log in to English Wikipedia. This means I can’t open the talk page and reply to the conversation there. Since it happened all the time, I assume that I’m no longer able to do anything in English Wikipedia, and as such, I made no further attempt to reply to the conversation on my talk page. After Yamla sent the last message, I got a notification on the Wikimedia Commons website, which after I clicked it, lead me here. * What is copyright?
Copyright is the exclusive right of the creator that created automatically based on declarative principles after a work is realized in a tangible form without reducing restrictions in accordance with the provisions of laws and regulations. Copyright regulates intellectual works in the fields of science, art, and literature which are set forth in a distinctive form and are given to ideas, procedures, methods, or concepts that have been set forth in a permanent form. * How is Wikipedia licenced?
For text in Wikipedia, it is licensed under one or more licenses. Most of it is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License (CC BY-SA) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). This does not necessarily mean they are licensed under both of the aforementioned licenses, some may be licensed under CC BY-SA but cannot be reused under GFDL.
For images, each of them may be licensed differently. The image has its own description page (usually in Wikimedia Commons) which explains how the image is licensed.
Wikipedia is using copyleft policy, where it grants the right to freely distribute its content and modify the intellectual property if and only if the copied version is made available on the same terms to others (i.e that anything derived from it is bound by the same conditions) and acknowledgment of the authors of the Wikipedia article used is included. * Why is copyrighted content not allowed on Wikipedia?
Because the copyright is owned by its own creator, and using it in Wikipedia without permission is a law violation. Because Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation) is based in the US, it is governed by United States copyright law. The legal penalties for copyright infringement are: Infringer pays the actual dollar amount of damages and profits. Since Wikipedia is an international project, The Wikimedia Foundation respects the copyright law of other nations, and the penalties of violation of copyright differ by each country. Infringing copyright would create legal issues, harm Wikipedia’s redistributability, and made a bad name for Wikipedia. * Under what circumstances can we use copyrighted content?
Preferably only public domain content or content licensed under CC BY-SA should be used in Wikipedia. To import media to the Wikimedia project, the author must be credited (in case a license required attribution). However, if copyrighted content is going to be used in Wikipedia, we must obtain permission from the owner(s) of the copyright by contacting them. If the owner(s) granted permission for the content to be used, we can use it. But it needs to be noted that we need to ask them to release material under one or more suitable copyright licenses (typically is a CC BY-SA compatible license and if possible also the GFDL (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts). * How do you intend to avoid violating the copyright policy in the future?
First, by reading and understanding the respective article about Wikipedia policy. If I want to use a content, I need to check the copyright license of the content that would be used. If no license can be found, it must always be assumed that the content is under the copyright of someone or something. If the content is from a book, the publisher held the copyright, which may be shared by the author, or by a combination agreed by the author and the publisher. For a journal article, I should check the webpage of the journal for information about the license (the article itself would be subject to copyright). Webpage and news page is, of course copyrighted, the holder being either the author (of an article) or the governing body/owner of the page. Copy-pasting a text is not permitted in Wikipedia. To avoid copyright violation on the text, I must reformulate the text using my own words, by doing so I’m not doing plagiarism. For images, the copyright is held by its creator. If I want to use/upload the image, I need to contact the owner of the copyright and asked permission to use/upload it, under a license that is suitable for use in Wikipedia. Some content may be already under public domain, they would only fall under public domain if stated as so or after a number of years after the death of the author/creator, governed by the laws of the United States of America, or the country in which the content originates. Hello, we are seeking help with the Sarah Azhari article, created in 2013 & recently the subject of a deletion proposal. At issue was whether or not the Indonesian language sources establish notability. I am inviting you to the discussion at Talk:Sarah Azhari#Help with Indonesian language sources because you are in the Category:User id-N & have a minimum of 1,000 edits across all Wikimedia projects.

I realize that some of you are very busy while others may no longer be editing. Nevertheless, I thought it wise to consult with you.

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, articles should not be moved, as you did to Colandia, without good reason. They should have a name that is both accurate and intuitive. Wikipedia has some guidelines in place to help with this. Generally, a page should only be moved to a new title if the current name doesn't follow these guidelines. Also, if a page move is being discussed, consensus needs to be reached before anybody moves the page. If you would like to experiment with page titles and moving, please use the test Wikipedia. Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Junk (ship) into Junk (ship). While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). Speedy deletion of Samudra Raksa

The page Samudra Raksa has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appeared to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appeared to be a direct copy from http://cultureart-indonesia.blogspot.com/2013/09/borobudur-ship-from-indonesia.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition has been be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Apologies - on closer inspection, it looks like my block and deletion were premature. On first pass, I saw the article as a direct copyvio of this 2013 blog, but I now see that you copied the material from an existing Wikipedia article, and the content that concerned me was present in that article prior to date of the blog - in other words, it was copied from us, not the other way around. Recent edit reversion

In this edit here, I reverted some information that appears to be a violation of our copyright policy.

I provided a brief summary of the problem in the edit summary, which should be visible just below my name. You can also click on the "view history" tab in the article to see the recent history of the article. This should be an edit with my name, and a parenthetical comment explaining why your edit was reverted. If that information is not sufficient to explain the situation, please ask.

I do occasionally make mistakes. We get hundreds of reports of potential copyright violations every week, and sometimes there are false positives, for a variety of reasons. (Perhaps the material was moved from another Wikipedia article, or the material was properly licensed but the license information was not obvious, or the material is in the public domain but I didn't realize it was public domain, and there can be other situations generating a report to our Copy Patrol tool that turn out not to be actual copyright violations.) Hi Philbrick, I have learned about Wikipedia's copyright policy, and subsequently I became very careful in wording my edits. I have made sure the sentences I added would not result in copyright infringement by rewording it. The exception is the quotation (under the section "Ptolemy IV's thalamegos"), which is meant to be as similar as possible to what the source says, except for my own grammatical improvements.

I did not use the pdf file you pointed out in the edit summary, in fact, my sources can be seen on the reference list.

During the edits, however, I noticed that there are sentence(s) that were similar to the source but were not added by me (specifically these: (Ancient Greek: θαλαμηγός = "room carrier" from the Greek Thalamos (room) + Ago (haul/carry/lead) and The huge twin-hulled catamaran was commissioned by Hellenistic king Ptolemy IV Philopator for himself and his wife Arsinoe III ca. 200 BCE.). But after my investigation, I found that sentence already exist in Wikipedia before getting copied in the source (the one in Wikipedia being older than the source). In my edits, I have reworded those sentences so it would not be very similar to the source. I think your assumption about me infringing copyright and reverting is unjustified, I await your reply. @Sphilbrick: Verosaurus (talk) 02:32, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

The tool used to identify potential copyright violations is very good but not perfect. One thing it doesn't do is treat material in quotes (or bloackquotes) as exceptions. There is good reason for this as excessive quotations are problematic but it does mean review does have to take care to distinguish between quoted and nonquoted material. I took a second look at my review and think I missed the fact that a large portion of the overlapping material was quoted. The quoted material included 217 words. As far as I know, neither copyright law nor Wikipedia practices specifically prescribed acceptable lengths for quoted material. That passage is longer than I would have felt comfortable using as an editor but there are very good arguments for using explicit quotes rather than rewriting in many circumstances and this may well qualify. It is possible that other editors would counsel shortening of the quotation but it is clear to me that you are appreciative of copyright rules and were using a long quote in good faith.
