Disputed fair use rationale for Image:BoyleDrSexGer.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:BoyleDrSexGer.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 07:10, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:BoyleDrSexGer.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:BoyleDrSexGer.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 19:39, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

NLP copyedit

I made a number of minor changes where you left notes eg. "redundant" and "what field". I've also been working on some of the reference and made some other minor changes today. It is getting closer to GA standards. Thanks for your copyediting. I'm still concerned that there is a general lack of flow and cohesion throughout the article. Some parts lack sufficient context other parts are just not clear. ----Action potential t c 03:39, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Abuelita Package and Product.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Abuelita Package and Product.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Southern Thule

I see you've been a busy editor, which is why I was surprised to see you add a ref to Southern Thule that doesn't appear to have been used in the text. Did you use that ref whilst editing as an IP editor, because the general rule on references is that we only add them if they're used in creating the article? Regards, Justin talk 20:13, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Having just read the first chapter of Outposts, it seems that this must have been a key source. I did not do any edits myself; perhaps I over-reached. Verne Equinox (talk) 20:17, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
The article currently doesn't name sources but if it can be used to add them to the article feel free to do so. Justin talk 08:03, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Your images in PNG

I've noticed quite a few of your images are in the raster format PNG, when they could more effectively be in the raster format JPEG. If I use Adobe Photoshop with your image, Image:DowntownNewGlasgow.png with an original size of 2.3 MB, can be more than halved to 1.1 MB at "Maximum" quality (12, if you're a photoshop user) or even 480 kB at 10 (also "Maximum"). I'm going to convert and re-upload Image:DowntownNewGlasgow.png and one or two others, but seeing as they're your photos and you (must) have the originals, it would preferable if you re-uploaded them yourself. Thanks — Cavenba (talkcontribs) 07:05, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

  • Somewhere I had been given to believe that .png was the preferred format for Wikipedia. Is there a policy you can direct me to? Verne Equinox (talk) 13:12, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
I don't believe there is a specific policy... but {{ShouldBeJPEG}} says what I'm getting at. Photographic data is usually best stored in JPEG. Try reading JPEG, PNG, etc because they both talk about which is better for what. Also, because this is on the Internet, smaller file sizes are better. If I do run into a policy on image formats, I'll let you know. Thanks. Cavenba (talkcontribs) 20:21, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
I read some of JPEG, and the important part reads: "The JPEG compression algorithm is at its best on photographs and paintings of realistic scenes with smooth variations of tone and color. For web usage in particular, where the bandwidth used by an image is important, JPEG is the ideal photographic image format. On the other hand, JPEG is not as well suited for line drawings and other textual or iconic graphics, where the sharp contrasts between adjacent pixels cause noticeable artifacts. Such images are better saved in TIFF format (for local usage) or in GIF or PNG format (for web usage)." Cavenba (talkcontribs) 20:25, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
I thought I should say that I uploaded these: Image:DowntownNewGlasgow.jpg, Image:NewGlasgow_EastRiverBridge.jpg, and Image:NSHighway104_OutsideNewGlasgowWest.jpg (although the East River image is still over 1 MB). Cavenba (talkcontribs) 20:30, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Oligotrophic Lake Hall

Actually, being an oligotrophic lake is a good thing. The reverse is eutrophic, like, say, Lake Munson. Oligotrophic lakes have fewer organisms in them, but usually many more kinds, and lower nutrient levels. I removed your internal note on this topic. Let me know if you want more information. Speedy deletion of Like the 309

A tag has been placed on Like the 309, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. -- JediLofty UserTalk 14:56, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
