Coms 411 Question
Hi Veronica,
- I am part of Krista Lynes Coms 411 course. I am currently building a page on the transgender rights activist Drian Juarez, and I am having trouble as the wiki-editors say I am in copyright violation (this was on Friday orginally and after additional edits on Saturday). I only have 2 written sources and 2 video sources, so the content is not vary varied. However, since being informated of my violation I have edited everything to be different except for the names of the places Juarez went to school and the organizations she has worked for. I do not want to hand in an assignment that is being accused of copyright violation, but I am unsure how to edit my content any further because at this point I would have to change or remove the names of the organizations Drian Juarez has worked for. Have you had someone in this position before? Your guidance would be very much appreciated.

 You are invited to join us for a full Saturday (drop-in any time!) of social Wikipedia editing at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for our upcoming "WikiArte" Latin America Edit-a-thon, for Wiki Arte y Cultura Latinoamericana, a communal day of creating, updating, improving, and translating Wikipedia articles about Latin American art and culture.
All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. We will provide training sessions and resources for beginner Wikipedians, WiFi, reference materials, and suggested topics, as well as childcare and refreshments. Hi Vaparedes. I'm an editor (not very active till now) of the Italian Wikipedia, where the gender gap is a real issue. I'm trying to participate to an IEG with the project "Women are everywhere". On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia. The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Asian Month, and Art+Feminism. New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support. Ignorant editors on Wikipedia
- Vaparedes Having some trouble adding in information about a Latina academic. Basically, her info keeps getting deleted because some male editors don't think she's important. Or that articles/books mentioning her aren't important and notable enough. Any advice on how to deal with that?DavidRThomason (talk) 21:35, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
- DavidRThomason I would take care before making accusations and assumptions. The reasons for deletion were solely down to Wikipedia's notability policy (cf WP:GNG) and nothing else. You may have made assumptions about the gender and motives of other editors which is always unwise. If you intend to write an article about this alumna, then please go ahead and include all the required references that assert notability. Then, and only then, add the name to the list of alumni. But I looked at the references given and I could see no notability there that would support an article - they were own web-site, a very local award etc. etc. and I judged that it was therefore insufficient to support a name inclusion for an alumna. - This is about University of the Incarnate Word. Vaparedes has not edited in some time, so you might not get a response, DavidRThomason. We are not "ignorant", and I do not know how you have decided that everyone reverting you is male. Please read Wikipedia:Notability to understand why you are being reverted. A subject is considered notable if it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. You have not demonstrated this for the person you are trying to add. Furthermore, once you have been reverted, you need to discuss the matter with other editors before trying to reinstate the material. See Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle about this. - I am not speaking on behalf of Vaparedes, but rather trying to explain Wikipedia policies and guidelines. The sources mention the subject, but not in any real detail, so they do not amount to significant coverage.   Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives. A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand. Light refreshments will be provided. Make edits! Ask questions! Be bold!

On Sunday, October 16, Wikimedia NYC will host a multimedia tutorial, workshop, and hackathon focused on Wikimedia Commons and the work processes for cultural multimedia wiki-projects. The CommonsLab is the concluding "upload party" to the Wikipedia @ Open House New York Weekend photo scavenger hunt, and an accompanying Wikimedia Commons multimedia hackathon. The event will take the form of a modified unconference, with sessions for photographers/creatives, editors/writers and hackers/software folks!
