Guideline and policy news

• Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.

• Additionally, consensus for proposal 6C of the 2021 RfA review has led to the creation of an administrative action review process. The purpose of this process will be to review individual administrator actions and individual actions taken by users holding advanced permissions.

Arbitration

• Following the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Cabayi, Donald Albury, Enterprisey, Izno, Opabinia regalis, Worm That Turned, Wugapodes.

Miscellaneous

sources in USS Johnston (DD-557)

Thanks for your edits to USS Johnston (DD-557) to whip into shape – they are great improvements. Regarding the sources (particularly Morison), the 3 volumes you cite weren't all published in 1958, so there's no need for "date=1958a/1958b/1958c" disambiguators for {{sfn}} refs.

Also, the sources I moved to Further Reading were unreferenced, displaying Harv warnings. E.g.: "Harv warning: There is no link pointing to this citation. The anchor is named CITEREFMorison1958c." That is why I moved them to Further reading, since they aren't directly cited, and to prevent generation of those warnings.

If you're in the process of adding material that will eventually cite the currently-unreferenced cites, I'll happily hold off moving them for now. Regards, happy editing.  — sbb (talk) 19:57, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

@Sbb: I was unaware that History of United States Naval Operations in World War II wasn't all published in the same year, so that sort of perplexes me. As for the books I moved back into the general population, I am going to use them, don't worry. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 20:06, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Buidhe: since we are all here, I'm continuing the discussion on this thread. I took care of the two issues. But I have a question about the two fair-use images in the article: File:Kurt_Meyer_and_Paul_Hausser_at_a_HIAG_convention.jpg and File:Der_Freiwillige_1959_cover.jpg. For 1) I am not sure that it meets NFCC#8: "its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic". It just shows a group of men celebrating together. For 2) it could certainly be justified in the article about the magazine, but I don't think it works in this article because judging from the caption the main message could be and is conveyed through sourced text (NFCC#1). Guideline and policy news

• The Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines have been published for consideration. Voting to ratify this guideline is planned to take place 7 March to 21 March. Comments can be made on the talk page.

Technical news

• The user group oversight will be renamed suppress in around 3 weeks. This will not affect the name shown to users and is simply a change in the technical name of the user group. The change is being made for technical reasons. You can comment in Phabricator if you have objections.
• The Reply Tool feature, which is a part of Discussion Tools, will be opt-out for everyone logged in or logged out starting 7 February 2022. Editors wishing to comment on this can do so in the relevant Village Pump discussion.

Arbitration

• Community input is requested on several motions aimed at addressing discretionary sanctions that are no longer needed or overly broad.
• The Arbitration Committee has published a generalised comment regarding successful appeals of sanctions that it can review (such as checkuser blocks).
• A motion related to the Antisemitism in Poland case was passed following a declined case request.

Miscellaneous

• Voting in the 2022 Steward elections will begin on 07 February 2022, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 26 February 2022, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
• Voting in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey is open until 11 February 2022.

Addition of WikiProject Nebraska to USS Nebraska

Hello! I noticed that in May 2017, you added the WikiProject Nebraska template to USS Nebraska (BB-14). May I ask your reasoning for this? Well, first, half the sources I'm finding so far are in English. Second, while I'm pretty good in Russian, for Ukrainian I mostly rely on Google/Bing translation. But third, despite a fair bit of searching, I found nothing about this No Obvious Signs thing until I searched on Wikipedia itself - while you obviously did! Though I'm getting a fair bit about The Invisible Battalion, I had no clue she did another film. So whatever you did to find that will be very very useful! • Access to Special:RevisionDelete has been expanded to include users who have the deletelogentry and deletedhistory rights. The users able to view the special page after this change are the 3 users in the Researcher group, as there are currently no checkusers who are not already administrators. (T301928)

• A arbitration case regarding Skepticism and coordinated editing has been closed.

• Voting for the Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement guidelines has closed, and the results were that 56.98% of voters supported the guidelines. The results of this vote mean the Wikimedia Foundation Board will now review the guidelines.

Removed pictures of sunk USS Johnston (DD-557)

Hi, can you please clarify on the talk page of the ship why you keep removing the pictures of the sunken ship? They are CC-BY-SA so "copyright reasons" should't be an issue. Thank you. Byankuren (talk) 08:04, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

@Byankuren: There's a clarification at the ongoing A-class review. The photos are not actually CC-BY-SA because we aren't certain that the uploader was the holder of the images' copyrights. It is entirely possible that the uploader is in fact Victor Vescovo or does have that copyright (as they claim here), but they haven't verified either of those things. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 08:13, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Vami IV:, first of all I would like to thank you for uplevelling the article about USS Johnston to a Good Article status. For sure it was a lot of work. To some degree I was surprised that the three pictures depicting the wreck are no longer part of the article, to some degree I wasn´t. I was the one who inserted them in the gallery after the user Vlvescovo mentioned that he provided them via commons. I have read all related discussions about the identity of the user VIvescovo and his uploaded pictures and would like to ask you under what circumstances you are willing to reinsert the pictures. Should there be an additional review by OTRS team members? I have been trough all this because I wanted to have pictures of his submersible for the related article and it was everything but easy to get this finally done. But now the article about this sub does have some pictures in contrast to the one about James Camerons Deepsea Challenger where there is still just a drawing of it. In my opinion it would be nice for the readers to have the three pictures or at least one in the article about the Johnston, just to round up this much improved article. What do you think about this? • The ability to undelete the associated talk page when undeleting a page has been added. This was the 11th wish of the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey.
• A public status system for WMF wikis has been created. It is located at https://www.wikimediastatus.net/ and is hosted separately to WMF wikis so in the case of an outage it will remain viewable.

Arbitration

• Remedy 2 of the St Christopher case has been rescinded following a motion. The remedy previously authorised administrators to place a ban on single-purpose accounts who were disruptively editing on the article St Christopher Iba Mar Diop College of Medicine or related pages from those pages.

I'm back from my wikibreak. Would you have any interest in helping me polish off a new ACW CCI - Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Hary1mo? The images are all claimed to be own work or CC-by-SA 4.0, but are generally either obvious public domain or obvious copyright violations. Although there's some stuff where the source isn't clear that I'm leaning towards probably a violation, and then there's trickier ones like File:USS Peterhoff wreck.jpg that's claimed CC-by-SA 4.0 but is apparently a work of the North Carolina government. Ok, let's move ahead with this. could you please go to the talk page at the main page for WikiProject History, open a new section, there, and then please: a) introduce yourself, b) mention that I asked you to please volunteer as a possible Coordinator for WikiProject History, and then c) mention some basic details about your editing experience, past editing accomplishments, relevant awards or milestones if you wish, and of course d) the details on your editing as it relates to history topics, which I know is pretty substantial. You can also of course add or include anything else you feel that you'd like to mention in your messsage there.

I will then comment on your message, and will indicate my support. we will allow a time period of about two weeks to allow anyone to comment who wishes to do so. the purpose of this procedure is to maintain some degree of structure for this process, as well as transparency. • Administrators using the mobile web interface can now access Special:Block directly from user pages. (T307341)
• The IP Info feature has been deployed to all wikis as a Beta Feature. Any autoconfirmed user may enable the feature using the "IP info" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features. Autoconfirmed users will be able to access basic information about an IP address that includes the country and connection method. Those with advanced privileges (admin, bureaucrat, checkuser) will have access to extra information that includes the Internet Service Provider and more specific location.

Arbitration

• Remedy 2 of the Rachel Marsden case has been rescinded following a motion. The remedy previously authorised administrators to delete or reduce to a stub, together with their talk pages, articles related to Rachel Marsden when they violate Wikipedia's biographies of living persons policy.

Can't do a whole lot with anything written now with a badly cracked computer screen. But from a quick glance of the Watie article, I don't think File:Polson Cemetery, Historical Marker for Stand Watie (Degataga Oo-Watee).JPG is usable. No freedom of panorama in USA and it was apparently erected by a state historical society in 1971, so it's not federal government PD and not old enough for PD. Any thoughts on this image's licensing? I have been following your remarkable work on Boliver for some time, bravo! It seems like you are on the home stretch with his life, though I assume the legacy section will take some time.

Re this; I added the notes subheading as I assumed it had been forgotten. If your intention was/is to minimize the sub-headers for that section, then perhaps returning to "References" above "Citations" and "Bibliography" makes more sense, given that the current format has the "Bibliography" as part of the "Notes" section, which is rather odd. I think I might be confused? I hadn't forgotten a subheading; I just hate having section headers directly below each other, with no separation. It's always struck me as a waste of space. The headers I was using, however, could have used improvement, and I think they are much improved now with your prodding. Yes; they're inappropriate and actually not all that relevant. I mentioned when Degrelle won notable awards like the Iron Cross in the regular prose anyway. Gah, of course. That'll have to go, too. Absolutely needless. A complete, Good or Featured Article on Zhukov would not have that list and instead mention important awards as they come up in the prose. See Walter Krueger or Alan McNicoll as examples without subsections for awards. I guess if I'm bringing up Featureds as examples though, there's Douglas MacArthur#Honors and awards (but then he's MacArthur) or Lionel Matthews as a bad example (especially as it may break our guidelines for non-free content. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 22:37, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

I use wiki for information.....facts and data, I am capable of deciding by myself which I consume. I don't need to read an article that has being throttled because of editors preferences of what should be seen. The users are not children that need to have basic facts censored, they can make their own minds up. This denial of knowledge is not a good thing!

Indeed, readers can make their own minds up. If they really want to know all the awards Degrelle won, they can search that up somewhere else. But the inclusion of a list of his awards, or any soldier's, is unencyclopedic. Especially if the sources for that list include titles like "Loyalty was their Honor!", which is an almost word-for-word quotataion of the Waffen-SS's motto. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 21:42, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

yes but this is where people look stuff up! I don't see the downside of a list of awards....if I am looking up a person, I want that information there, so I can decide if it is relevant to me or not. In the case case of Degrelle, his awards are public knowledge, but why would you want to drive people away by restricting the information that is allowed, or worse, driving them to sites that are far worse than wiki. The information is already in the article: In May [1942], he was made an officer and awarded the Iron Cross, First Class, for his conduct in battle. [...] On 20 February [1944], Degrelle was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross by Hitler.

The reason a separate section (or worse) for awards is a bad idea is threefold: it's unnecessary and just takes up space; it needlessly adds to the size of an article; and it becomes a sort of altar to that person and to the idea of military glory. That is not a thing that needs to be promoted, and the trend on-wiki has been to remove them in favor of mentioning noteworthy commendations in the prose and listing prominent awards in the infobox. IMO it does not matter that he was a Nazi, what matters is that the awards are not the primary or even secondary reason for his notability. For a counter example, some Olympic athletes are indeed notable for the awards they received, and I wouldn't remove Oksana_Chusovitina#Competitive_history (although the next two sections of that article feel pretty crufty). The politics are irrelevant to me, although I know well that many people see only through the political lens! I see no difference between the soldier and the athlete, if I look up either, I am doing so to find out information about them. I do not want or need others to decide which information is worth me seeing. I have the ability to figure that out myself.

The fact that Vami deleted the Awards of Degrelle, but put a request in to delete the awards of Patton, and has left Zhukovs awards untouched lets me know that Wiki NPOV policy it not worth the virtual paper it is written on. Shame on those who censor and push their own agenda and narrative

I cannot modify edit summaries. If it will suffice, I checked some of my sources again and Eddy de Bruyne, at least, is a reliable author (Martin Conway cites his French-language work a few times in his book about Rex and Degrelle). Rikmeenspoel appears to be another Gordon Williamson (writer), though. I'd be happy to learn that that isn't the case, but I had a look at his works and one of them is a translation of a Waffen-SS memoir while the other is a book-size listicle of Knight's Cross winners. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 20:01, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

hello, Vami IV! i had a quick question regarding this article and the associated blurb. tannerite appears to be a brand name. should it be capitalized in the blurb and article? i am not sure if it is being used as a genericized trademark, but the cited cnn source capitalizes it, and this npr source seems to focus on it being a brand. dying (talk) 04:19, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

It had escaped me that Tannerite is a brand, but that was because the word "tannerite" has become quick shorthand for Tannerite-like explosive powders. That is why I rendered it in lower-case in the article and blurb. I do not know for sure if it was Tannerite tannerite in that target in April 2017 (though I guess those sources imply it was the genuine article), but it is moot anyway. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 05:00, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

are you saying that "tannerite" is generally accepted as a genericized trademark? i am admittedly not familiar with the substance, which is why i found it unusual when i noticed that many of the sources on the fire, as well as wikipedia's own article on the explosive, generally capitalized the brand name. this discrepancy is why i wanted to check with you regarding whether its use as a generic term was proper.

i think "aspirin" has been genericized to the point that using it uncapitalized on the main page should not be an issue. however, i also know that "coke" is used as a generic term for a soft drink in some varieties of english, but i cannot recall ever coming across such a use of "coke" on wikipedia (aside from, of course, in the discussion of its use as a generic term). also, i noticed that the tannerite web site seems to be trying to protect their brand name, with registered trademark symbols liberally used throughout.

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

• Consensus has been found in an RfC to automatically place RfAs on hold after one week.
• The article creation at scale RfC has been closed.
• An RfC on the banners for the December 2022 fundraising campaign has been closed.

Technical news

• A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. • Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 12, 2022 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.
• The proposed decision for the 2021-22 review of the discretionary sanctions system is open.

• The arbitration case Stephen has been opened and the proposed decision is expected 1 December 2022.
• A motion has modified the procedures for contacting an admin facing Level 2 desysop.

Miscellaneous

• Tech tip: A single IPv6 connection usually has access to a "subnet" of 18 quintillion IPs. Add /64 to the end of an IP in Special:Contributions to see all of a subnet's edits, and consider blocking the whole subnet rather than an IP that may change within a minute.
