References edit

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. Remember that when adding content about health, please only use high-quality reliable sources as references. We typically use review articles, major textbooks and position statements of national or international organizations (There are several kinds of sources that discuss health: here is how the community classifies them and uses them). WP:MEDHOW walks you through editing step by step. A list of resources to help edit health content can be found here. The edit box has a built-in citation tool to easily format references based on the PMID or ISBN. We also provide style advice about the structure and content of medicine-related encyclopedia articles. The welcome page is another good place to learn about editing the encyclopedia. Conflict of interest in Wikipedia edit

Hi Urologymd1. I work on conflict of interest issues here in Wikipedia, along with my regular editing, which is mostly about health and medicine. Your edits to date are on a bit of a run about the Penuma penis implant, and violate several of our policies and guidelines. I'm giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and requests for you below.

  Hello, Urologymd1. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you.

Comments and requests edit

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. Unmanaged conflicts of interest can also lead to people behaving in ways that violate our behavioral policies and cause disruption in the normal editing process. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).

Hello! I absolutely understand the need to disclose, and my apologies for not doing so earlier - I am new to editing on Wikipedia. I am not connected directly to Penuma. I am a urologist in Los Angeles who has had an opportunity to observe the Penuma implant procedure and have done independent research on it. My apologies that my entries came off as advertisements. I would simply like to include the Penuma implant procedure as a discussed option. I tried to reference articles from the FDA's website and published articles from PubMed. I will of course make sure that any edits going forward are framed in an unbiased manner that simply presents information. Please let me know if you have any further feedback.

Would need a mechanism to verify this claim. Unfortunately you have no email contact. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:13, 16 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Dr. Heilman, my apologies again for the issues caused here. I am committed to being a helpful contributor to the Wikipedia community, and I'd like to take whatever steps necessary to be able to contribute again to the site in a manner consistent with community guidelines. As requested, I've added my email address to my profile. Like I mentioned, I do not have a financial arrangement with Penuma nor any conflicts of interest with respect to the product. I have observed the procedure, and it may be an option for patients provided that the potential risks and complications are disclosed in advance. Please let me know what additional steps I should take in this regard. In the meantime, if given the opportunity, I commit to providing contributions that are unbiased and referenced with high quality sources similar to the FDA reference I used in one instance. Thank you again for your consideration.

March 2018 edit

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for advertising or self-promoting in violation of the conflict of interest and notability guidelines.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 18:36, 16 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
You have been requested to disclose your COI with respect to the product you are writing about on multiple pages. You have also been requested to use higher quality sources. You need to agree to that before you can return to editing. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 18:50, 16 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Decline reason:

Let us assume that every word you have said here is true. We are then left with the conclusion that you are here for the purpose of publicising and promoting something because you are enthusiastic about it and believe it should be better known. Such editing to promote, publicise, or advertise something is not permitted, whether or not it is done for financial gain. Since you have not given any indication that you will not continue to edit on the same subject, unblocking you would be unlikely to benefit the project. In addition to that, you happen by bad luck to have chosen a topic to edit about where there has been persistent and concerted promotional editing over the course of several years, conducted by a number of single-purpose editors who have never done anything other than editing to promote that one subject. Moreover, by a remarkable piece of bad luck your editing has had a very similar promotional appearance to that of the earlier editors who have edited on that topic. That makes it seem even less probable that unblocking you would benefit the project. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 13:16, 28 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

Hi Mr. Watson, I appreciate your detailed response and consideration of my request. I would like to make one final appeal to be unblocked (my apologies in advance for taking additional time from you and the other members of the community - I assure you that this will be my final appeal). First and foremost, I do understand your point and those of the other administrators. In my few days on Wikipedia, I did in fact focus on the subject of penile cosmetic procedures. Over the years, I have received a significant number of patient inquiries on this topic, and I have conducted independent research into the matter. I understand and accept that my posts related to the one procedure were (or at the very least came off as) promotional, and I apologize; nevertheless, I do hope that the posts that I contributed which remained demonstrate a level of understanding and rigor that is consistent with what is expected of a Wikipedia editor (I appreciated Dr. Heilman's recognition of and appreciation for one of my posts). For example, I used sources such as the US FDA's website, the American Urological Association's website, and peer-reviewed journal articles from reputable journals for those posts. I certainly understand the hesitation to unblock my account, but I do hope I can be given a chance to demonstrate that I understand the errors I made and that my contributions going forward will be consistent with Wikipedia standards. More specifically, I commit to: 1) Avoiding references to the one specific cosmetic penile option 2) Broadening my contributions within urology and medicine 3) Treading lightly, especially as I further learn how Wikipedia operates and how to stay in line with standards As for your point about the earlier editors, all I can say is that I do not know Lnela Zerbolia nor Appleeliza. I do know Specialist1981, but his only contribution was a question to administrators regarding the rationale for the removal of a Wikipedia page. Overall, I understand that some of my posts were inconsistent with Wikipedia standards and that the sum of my contributions to date would suggest my being a single-purpose editor. I hope that the quality of the posts that did remain, the commitments made to you and the community here, and my appeal for an opportunity to demonstrate my commitment here might allow me the opportunity to have my account unblocked. Again, I thank you for your time and consideration.

Decline reason:

I am unconvinced that, although you stated you would not edit about the one specific area you already edited about, you would not simply edit in a similar manner about other procedures or products. I won't review a subsequent appeal should you choose to make one, but if I were I would request that you agree to not directly edit any urology-related articles, instead making edit requests on article talk pages. As such, I am declining this request. 331dot (talk) 15:41, 17 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

Thank you for your response. I am happy to comply with the request that I not make any direct edits to urology-related articles. Like I said before, any edits that I make outside of urology will be made in compliance with Wikipedia community guidelines. I would like to use my time on Wikipedia to reestablish a level of trust, and I will gladly comply with that request. Please let me know if there are any further questions or requests. I do hope to have the opportunity to contribute to the community again.

Procedural decline only. This unblock request has been open for more than two weeks but has not proven sufficiently convincing for any reviewing administrator to take action. Speedy deletion nomination of Penuma edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Penuma, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Jytdog (talk) 20:20, 16 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
