Notes

edit

Hi! I have some notes for you - I'm helping Elysia out.

  • Be careful of words like 'however', since that can come across as persuasive writing. So for example, with the mention of the MBA you could leave out the 'however' and just have it be the next sentence. You could change this up by just prefacing both sentences by including one that states something like "The ecological impact of sea scallop fishing differs depending on the organization."
  • Make sure that you avoid hotlinking within an article. By this I mean linking to external sites within the article. It's fine in the external links section. The main reason for this in the past has been to reduce on spam, since Wikipedia's had/has a problem with people doing this in the past. Some argue against it for aesthetic purposes, as well as the belief that article text should only link to Wikipedia articles. As a result linking like this within the article tends to be heavily discouraged. There is a whole page about this here (mostly about the external links section, but does discuss linking to external sites as a whole).

Other than that, I would just make sure that the scallop fishing section is specifically about sea scallops. More than one type of scallop is sold commercially, so make sure that the source is specifically looking at sea scallops and isn't making a general statement that includes both bay and sea scallops. I'm also curious about whether there's only one type of sea scallop that is commercially fished or if there are multiple types - or if there are multiple types of sea scallops at all. The MBA lists Digby and Hotate - are they the same thing? If so, then this should be mentioned in one of the other sections of the article. Essentially, I'm just worried that some of the sourcing may be very general and not be about sea scallop fishing in specific. Another note - are there any sea scallop farms, akin to how great scallops are sometimes farmed?

Other than that I think you're doing well! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:19, 29 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your feedback! The MBA information is actually from a previous update of the page that I didn't make. I should take a closer look regarding the points you made about those references! Thanks for pointing that out. I was only updating the page based on Atlantic sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) information. I actually don't know if there are other sea scallops, but I think it is a common enough name that typically people use Atlantic sea scallop just to be more specific. Atlantic sea scallop aquaculture is sort of starting as an industry, but there are still some hurdles to developing it fully. There's also some conflict with the wild fishery, at least in Maine (which is what I know the most about in terms of the fishery). TurtleStones7 (talk) 22:18, 29 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
