What goes on a talk page?

Greetings. This is where people (and some software) can post messages to you. It can be used to discuss why someone doesn't agree with an edit you made, or to invite you to a discussion about some article. People can contact you here about anything we do at Wikipedia.

When you reply to someone on your own talk page it's a good idea to include their name like this: [[user:Alsee]] . That will ensure I get a notification that you're talking to me. Or you can post on my talk page and I'll get it.

There's a million things to learn, but it's ok to learn-as-you-go. You can start out with well-intentioned edits to improve articles. Don't worry if some of your edits get reverted... you are allowed to make changes and other people can change it back if they think it doesn't fit with our rules. It's a normal part of figuring out how we work. I'll post one of our Welcome Templates below, it has a great collection of links. P.S. If you put ~~~~ after your message it will add your name and timestamp signature. Alsee (talk) 01:13, 1 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Welcome!

Hello, Tudorttt, and welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few links to pages you might find helpful:

You may also want to take the Wikipedia Adventure, an interactive tour that will help you learn the basics of editing Wikipedia.

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or click here to ask for help on your talk page, and a volunteer should respond shortly. Again, welcome!

Thank you

You're welcome :) Alsee (talk) 01:18, 1 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

One question User:Alsee, how did you find my user page and my talk page though? I have not edited an article yet? Tudorttt (talk) 01:21, 1 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
We have a page where we can view the most recent Wikipedia edits. It's good for catching (and removing) vandalism or other poor edits. It's just dumb luck that I noticed a listing creating a new talk page (the first edit to this page technically created the page), and it listed your edit summary "(What is the purpose of this page?)". I figured I'd be helpful. I'm a random editor like you, just with a bit more experience. One of our big concerns is that Wikipedia can be a bit tough on newbies.
You might have noticed that my edit I added a colon in front of your message, and I put two in front of mine. A colon adds an indent. It helps keep the conversation-layout a lot more clear. Alsee (talk) 01:32, 1 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Not to be wierd or anything I've gone thru a article talk page source code and saw people using ping? What is that User:Alsee? Tudorttt (talk) 02:04, 1 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
No problem. The software feature that notifies me when you leave a message on your own page is relatively new. We have multiple ways to do it. Simply mentioning my name as a link user:Alsee is enough, using ping is the same thing. Ping just indicates that you're specifically notifying me, rather than linking my name for some other reason.
BTW, was there some article you wanted to edit? If so I could look at what you want to change, let you know if there's any special rules that might cause it to be removed, and offer any assistance for your first article edit. Alsee (talk) 02:27, 1 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
'Yes but it has alock on it and says registered users, but I registered my self when I create a account, so is there some sort of a problem or something? Here is the name of the article Help:editing. I just want to add a blue link on the word trivial in the beginging should I press suggest a edit @Alsee:? Tudorttt (talk) 02:39, 1 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Ah. That page is "Semi-protected". That means your account needs to be at least 4 days old, and have a several accepted article edits, to qualify as an automatically confirmed new user. We did that because the page was getting vandalized a lot. I checked and found the short discussion on it at Help_talk:Editing/Archive_3#Protection. What did you want the word "trivial" to link to? Alsee (talk) 03:01, 1 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
The word trivial. @Alsee:Tudorttt (talk) 05:01, 1 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I see you made some good edits, but I'm going to undo the "Update the date" on the Refimprove notice. It can be useful to editors to know that the article has had a problem for a long time. And ugh.... that article has had a problem since 2008. Wikipedia is all volunteer work, and unfortunately sometimes pages can sit for a very long time waiting for someone to take up work on it.
