what? born in 20th century and worked in the 13th? How?

To answer your confusion, let me change the sentence a bit.

"Patrick Osmund Lewry (1929-1987) was a Dominican who made significant contributions to the history of logic and the philosophy of language in the thirteenth century."

He didn't work in the thirteenth century. He worked on ideas that were discussed in the thirteenth century.

Also, I have reverted your question, since you asked it on the article itself. For future reference, you should ask questions on ther articles Talk Page, which you can get to by clicking talk at the top of any article. I do agree, however, that the sentence lacks clairity.
