TRNC

edit

I'm trying to be neutral by removing pro-Greek POV's and putting something more neutral in place, so unless you're a Greek Cypriot sympathiser, your rationale for removing my edits do not make sense Expatkiwi

I think you might be overdoing it a little and are adding Turkich POV instead. Writing that the Greeks "moved" to the south is an understatement to say the least. After the war, no-one (including Turkish Cypriots) moved anywhere of their own free will. Travelbird 09:44, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
You're forgetting the Population Exchange Agreement between the two sides in 1975. I am going to be honest: I support recognition for the TRNC. so I do have a bias, but seeing references having pro-Greek bias on this issue does need editing. Expatkiwi

Azeri Airlines

edit

Several months ago, a group of Azeri journalists had chartered an airliner from Azeri Airlines, which flew direct from Baku to Ercan. It was followed up with another, similar flight. Bayrak Television showed pictures on its website (www.brt.gov.nc.tr) of the Azeri Airlines jet on the tarmac at Ercan with the passengers disembarking waving miniature Azerbaijan flags. Expatkiwi

Do you know if any further flights are planned, or was this just some kind one-off/two-off publicity stunt ? I'm a bit surprised I didn't hear more about it on Greek-Cypriot TV/Newspapers. Normally they go through the roof when anything like this happens. But maybe I just missed it. Travelbird 06:10, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Last thing I had heard was that a group of American Senators flew into Ercan, which caused a major uproar. Travelbird

Regarding your recent edit on History of Albania: A really fine stroke! (I can't find the right words in English, but I meant 'fine' like 'fin' in French, and stroke ~ the stroke of a painter. ), I would have read that article 100 times and would have never noticed the small but significant difference in referring to two different Yougoslavias (in time and space) with the same name. You must have a very sharp eye besides a good knowledge of history.
I scanned through the list of the countries you have visited... Impressive! I hope Albania is high up on your TO GO list, though :) jonosphere 11:09, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Charity (virtue) article

edit

Hi there, I was the editor who removed several links I considered non-relevant to the Charity (virtue) article. I happened to be not logged in at time, so it was anonymous IP edit, and I just noticed I received a vandalism warning about this. Though, I'm wondering why this edit was reverted and why this was labelled as vandalism. With the exception the Hindu link which I deleted by mistake, the other links I deleted were not relevant to the article (on the virtue of Charity), as they are about specific charitable organizations. In addition, I explained my reasoning in the edit. So why the vandalism accusation? Bwithh 15:37, 6 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

At the moment I'm not quite sure why I reverted the edits. I've had a few problems with Vandalproof these last few days, so I'm not sure if it was a malfunction, or if I got into an overzealous reverting mode myself. Sorry. Travelbird 16:44, 6 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yoga

edit

Hello Travelbird

I made an addition to the Meditation page that you removed and am wondering why. The final sentence said not to add commercial links to the wikipedia. I feel that this is in error. The information on the pages linked to is a complete and free of charge set of instructions in yoga, including meditation. While these instructions are free there are books that the author has written that are linked to, however nothing is available for purchase from the site itself. Thus it falls out of the definition of a "commercial site". However, if you disagree then you should remove the link to Vipassana Meditation at www.dhamma.org on the Meditation page becuase it does the same thing, namely provides some free content and links to the "author's" (S.N. Goenka's) work for sale.

I took another look at the page and have to say that it is border line. While it does have a lot of information the website is also clearly geared to sell a number of yoga books. If you wish, you can go back and add the link again, but you may find that it will be removed by someone else sooner or later. Travelbird 04:25, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi I see you have left a message on this user's page in regards to his edits. I'm cannot quite work out if he is engaged in vandalism or does not know what he is doing. I have left a message saying I am willing to assist him in trying to improve the quality of his edits. However it is good to know that someone more experienced that me has noticed it.

I'm not quite sure about him either, i.e. whether his edits are just due to inexperience or are acctually malicious. E.g. he edited Kevin Costner again just a few minutes ago, exchanging the current photography with a non-existant "Image10101917.jpg". I'll put a message on his page again, and see if he replies. spellings

edit

you have gone and changed dozens and dozens of spellings for ice hockey player names. I urge you to please stop. We have an agreement already in place for spellings here Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Player pages format and you are going against that agreement. it has been agreed that this is the english language section of wikipedia, so therefore we use the english spelling that is most common in popular media and other english outlets. Masterhatch 22:20, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't really see a consensus on the talk page. I strongly disagree with this. Spelling a name wrong on purpose make Wikipedia unencylopedia. Any encylopedia pusblished in book form would never do this. The names should be spelled with diacritics and have a redirect page without leading to them. This Definately has be to be discussed further. I will refrain from changing further pages for the moment. I urge you do do the same until a consenus is reached. Travelbird 22:31, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
so, you are calling viturally every single publisher in the english language wrong? very few publishers use the diacritics and wikipeida is all about the layman and the most common usage in english. Masterhatch 22:32, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Every encylopedia ??? Take a look at http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9045939?query=J%E1n%20Koll%E1r&ct= for example, (EB's online edition). I don't quite see why you object to a person's name being spelled in a proper manner. Imagine your user name being spelled Mástrhać one some page, just because someone made a mistake (or didn't have any knowledge of the English language). Redirects provide a perfect sollution for people that don't have diacritics on their keyboards. I may also add that making an exception for hockey player would be inconsistant with other parts of Wikipedia where diacritics are used. Travelbird 22:40, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think it comes down to this: what is the most common way to spell the name in English in the media, reference books, on the internet, and officially within the NHL. I think you will find that all the aformentioned sources don't use diacritics very often, if at all. Despite arguments by some, it is not spelt "wrong" without diacritics, it is just spelt the English way. That means different from the native spellings, not wrong. Masterhatch 22:44, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
every encyclopaedia? what are you talking about? i just said that the majority of English publications about hockey do not use diacritics. Masterhatch 22:45, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
The NHL itself doesn't use diacritics on team sweaters, in record books, or other publications. Local newspapers don't either. Most history reference books about hockey also do not use diacritics. Masterhatch 22:49, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

The problem with not using diacritics (especially in resources such as encylopedias) is that most name witll be pronounced differently and may have a different meaning with or without diacrtics. Hacek is pronounec Haw-tsek while Haček is Haw-tchek. A name without diacritcs is spelled wrong. Many people just don't notice it because they have no knowledge of the respective language. Often diacritics are igonored, sometime they are transliterated (e.g. Mueller instead of Müller). But why should Wikipedia strive to be wrong ? That's the part I don't get. Sure many others may not know/care how names are spelled - but why should we make it a policy to misspell names, especially since there are redirects. I could see a point in spelling names without diacritics if there was no way to automatically redirect to the corerect spelling, but since there is - why produce an encylopedia full of mistakes ? Travelbird 22:54, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, i will repeat, "It is not wrong to spell it the English way, just different." As for pronunciation, well, we hicks called English speakers have our own unique way of pronouncing names and words that are very different from the native way. Sorry, but that is just how English is. Besides, those diacritics mean nothing to most of us English speakers because they don't do a damn thing for us! they don't help us with pronunciation and they make the spellings even more difficult. One of the most important idea of the MoS is this: "Generally, article naming should give priority to what the majority of English speakers would most easily recognize, with a reasonable minimum of ambiguity, while at the same time making linking to those articles easy and second nature." Sorry, but diacritics are not second nature or even natural for the majority of English speakers. By using diacritics in article titles, we are actually going against the MoS. I will repeat, it is not spelt wrong in English to omit diacritics and other non English characters from spellings (in most cases). Masterhatch 23:27, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, as an English speaker myself I would have do disagree. Contrary to what you might think, I'm not Czech. For naming conventions, look at : [Wikipedia:Naming_policy_%28Czech%29] Travelbird 23:31, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I could quote the MoS all day:

  • Names of Wikipedia articles should be optimized for readers over editors; and for a general audience over specialists
  • Name your pages in English and place the native transliteration on the first line of the article unless the native form is more commonly used in English than the English form
  • Article titles should use the Latin alphabet, not any other alphabets or other writing systems
  • If you are talking about a person, country, town, movie or book, use the most commonly used English version of the name for the article, as you would find it in other encyclopedias and reference works
  • but the most damaging to your case can be found here: Wikipedia:Naming conventions (standard letters with diacritics)
  • Diacritics should only be used in an article's title, if it can be shown that the word is routinely used in that way, with diacritics, in common usage. This means in major English-language works, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, or articles in major English-language newspapers.
  • If the word is routinely listed without diacritics, then the Wikipedia article should follow that method for the article title, though the diacritics are still allowable within the body of the article itself
  • If it is not clear what "common usage" is, then the general Wikipedia guideline is to avoid use of diacritics in article titles

Sorry, but there isn't much left to say except that this is the English language section of wikipedia. Masterhatch 23:37, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

After the fact

edit

After i show you that it is against the MoS to use diacritics in article titles (in most cases), you continue to move articles around (Frantisek Rabon)! Judging by your user page and other contributions, i know you aren't a vandal, so what's up with that? Masterhatch 03:29, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Frantisek Rabon is no ice hockey player - or is he ? I agreed to refrain from moving further ice hockey related pages. I can't agree not to move any pages, as is is common wikipedia practice (with all other groups except ice hockey players to use diacritics. Travelbird 03:31, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
True he isn't an ice hockey player, but Wikipedia:Naming conventions (standard letters with diacritics) covers all of wikipedia, not just hockey. By deliberately ignoring that and moving pages to add the diacritics, you are going against a wikipedia naming convention. That is POV editing. If you care about wikipedia, you will help conform articles to this naming convention instead of going against it. Masterhatch 03:45, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I just can't fathom why you're so adament about this. a) That policy you're taking about is not binding, since it's very disputed. b) I don't see any harm in adding diatrics to page name since Wikipedia has redirects. If there were not redirects I would completly agree that page names should not use diacritics, but since there are I just don't see the point of adding deliberate mistakes to an encylopedia. Shouldn't an excylopedia be about educating people instead of just perpetuating (possibly common) mistakes ??? (mind you a person only has one correct name - that's the one in his passport, and the spelling therein is the only correct one) c) It I because I care about what's in Wikipedia that I am against purposefully adding wrong spellings to pages. An encyclopedia should provide a correct spelling, not a perpetuated wrong one. d) If you look around wikipedia for famous people with diacritical names you will find that almost all of these page titles have diacritics. Btw. If you check the interwiki links on these pages you will see that most other Wikipedias will have the respecitve name with diacritics also. Travelbird 03:59, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

a) itis the closest thing to an agreement that we have

b) i dont see any harm to keeping the English title and using diacritics in the redirect. I mean, seriously, in the English speaking world, how many people actually type the name with diacritics when they are looking up an article? Not many i bet and wikipedia is suposed to use the most common name for the article in English.

c) The English spellings are not wrong, they are just different than the native spelling. And the, as you put it, "correct" spelling is mentioned in the first line of the article.

d) Well, those articles you are referring to go against the most recent agreed upon convention.

I guess we agree to disagree. As they say in korean "ggeutimnida" (it is finished) Masterhatch 04:17, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

German Exonyms (Latvia) delete proposal

I think my opposition was clear. There is no need to have any foreign language pages like this on any regionalised Wikipedia. If there are others, we should join together to suggest their deletion as well. Martin Luther

edit

Category:Heretics [1]

"In theology, heresy is the holding of a belief that is in fundamental disagreement with the established teachings or doctrines of an organized religion"

Martin Luther

"The Emperor presented the final draft of Edict of Worms to the Diet on May 26, 1521, declaring Martin Luther an outlaw and a heretic and banning his literature" [2]

Declaring Martin Luther a heretic is entirely based on the teachings of a single church, in this case the Roman Catholic one, as is as such POV. If you included everyone in the heretic category that a particular church views as a heretic, you would end up including most theologans. Travelbird 04:10, 22 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Heresy [3] "Heretics usually do not define their own beliefs as heretical. Heresy is a value-judgment and the expression of a view from within an established belief system. For instance, Roman Catholics held Protestantism as a heresy while some non-Catholics considered Catholicism the "Great Apostasy." For a heresy to exist there must be an authoritative system of dogma designated as orthodox, such as those proposed by Catholicism. The term orthodox is used in Eastern Orthodoxy, some Protestant churches, in Islam, some Jewish denominations, and to a lesser extent in other religions." [4]

You should replace the definition of Heresy with your own, then you can start to remove people from the list ( Rowland Taylor and John Hooper and others are on the list[5] as well).

Thje category "People executed for herecy" is ok, because this is based on a fact (the execution as it's legal reason are verifiable).
You are correct that the category is inherenty flawed. It is sort of like having a category "Bad quality cars" or "Ugly towns". The main problem is that what constitutes "herecy" is subject to intense debate and not verifiable. I am going to propose that the category be split into serveral sub-categories named "People viewed by the XX Church as heretics". I have to see if I can come up with a shorter title though. Travelbird 04:47, 22 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good idea! Yeah, by definition it's enough if church xy says you are a heretic. Luther, as well as Galileo Galilei are, IMO, among the most famous people accused of heresy. Anyway, I'm glad that I had the chance to explain myself, I was acting in good faith and didn't mean to vandalize the article.

By the way, excommunication, outlawing a person and banning his literature are verifiable legal measures as well, no?

Yes. Those would prove that a certain denomination views a certain person as heretic (which will be need to include him a a category "People viewed by XY church as heretic") But there is no independant way to establish if a certain person actually is a heretic, because that depends heavily on what the respective people involved believe to be right/wrong. E.g. the Old Catholic Church views the current pope (and he predecessors post-1870) as heretics due to the RC dogma of infalibility. The orthodox churches views all western churches as heretic because of differences in trinity-dogma. That is why this category should be renamed and split into sub-categories. Travelbird 05:29, 22 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Agreed! My private opinion is that many of these people viewed as heretic just had some common sense ... I guess having that opinion makes me one too ...;=) It was nice discussing with you. Bye for now.

If we want to use Latin words and terms in English, we should respect the traditions and the history of a nation aged 2500 years; in other words we should use the words in their original form, meaning and context. I admit that it usually happens. This is the first time I see such a big mistake. It would be preferable to use personal income, for person, for head and so on. After all, those articles do not cite sources, and I really believed they were just the result of some unwanted editing mistakes. Also, please do not forget WP:BITE and assume my good faith. Dear Travelbird, I see that you have just placed a {{db-empty}} tag on Pavan Keshavamurthy, replacing its current content with said speedy tag. While it is true that this article must be speedied, it is because it redirected to a particular userpage due to a userfying of a self-article; therefore, the proper tag should have been {{db-rediruser}} instead. This is certainly of little consequence, since either way, it should be deleted; but I suggest you not to replace the contents of a page with a speedy tag, whatever these contents may be, as it may result in misunderstanding or a different interpretation of the underlying facts by other users. Spelling on Latvian Article

edit

Hello,

You look like you've been here for quite a while, so I will ask you this question. You've moved the article about Mezciems to it's Latvian spelling, is it more correct to list geographical names in their native language spelling or the English spelling? The Latvian spelling uses letters that aren't in English, so that's why I am concerned. We wouldn't after all be naming Chinese cities according to their Chinese spelling?

Best wishes, Sergejs s 08:08, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

If the names are not very well known by a different spelling in English, the local spelling is used. An example would be "Zurich", but even that has is now listed primarily under its local spelling. Compare articles such as Rēzekne, Kraków, Klaipėda, or Lech Wałęsa. Note that you should be careful to always also create a redirect page without special characters, that redirects to the correct spelling, so that people not typing these characters will still be able to reach the correct page. E.g. when creating a new page called "Lech Wałęsa", also create another one called Lech Walesa.
Chinese/Korean/Arabic charaters are different, because those cannot be read at all by a person only speaking a European language. The main difference is that you can still read Lech Wałęsa, even if you may pronounce it "Leck Valessa" instead of "Lekh Vawensa". Have fun editing ! Travelbird 12:13, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. Two things :

  • 1) Please try and wikify pages as to make it easier for subsequent editors.
  • 2) you have added numerous pages sourced as "This page incorporates content from Dr. Rohan Hettiarachchi's ". Could you please elaborate further on your permission to copy text from that page to Wikipedia ? Travelbird 14:26, 30 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your reply.
Please add something like "used with permisson of website owner" to your source notes, so that other editors may see that your use is legitimate. Travelbird
