Your edit to South Coast (Massachusetts) edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, one or more of the external links you added to the page South Coast (Massachusetts) do not comply with our guidelines for external links and have been removed. Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links; nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. The issue with links edit

The problem with the way you're going about this is that it pretty clearly looks like you are trying to spam your website. You don't appear to just want to add a link to one article, you seem to intend to add it to any article for which your website has even marginal relevance. Also the tagline "Your link to SouthCoast Massachusetts and beyond" that you've included every time you've added the link smacks of advertising as well. Please read the external links policy a bit more closely before proceeding. Cheers. Dina 16:12, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Jamielynndespres edit

User Jamielynndespres (talk · contribs) seems to make the same type of edits as user Tracys49. (e.g. only edits that include / promote a link to southcoasttoday dot com) Are you two the same person? DanniellaWB 22:52, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, we are not the same person. However, who would I speak to about the changes I made to the pages yesterday? I was blocked for some reason and the links that I am posting are not spam! They are links to more information for the puplic to go to. I have read the guidelines and everything that I posted has been within the guidelines. This is not an advertisement to other services, the information is just merely for more information for the public, especially since I work for the publication in the area of the pages that I was adding information too.

Please get back to me ASAP.

Thank You, Tracy

Unblock my page and IP Address edit

Dear Wikipedia,

Everything that I have been posting is NOT spam. The links are all relevant and a great source of information for the public. If you would have linked to the postings that I provided, you would have seen that everything is within your guidelines. I realize that I am new to Wikipedia and have been in contact with Dirk, but I do not understand why I have been blocked. I did post of alot of information yesterday but I can reassure you that it is not spam and all relevant. Please unblock me when you have a second or have someone email me to explain to me what the issue is.

Thank You!

Most definitely not within our guidelines. See WP:SPAM and WP:EL. — Yamla 13:34, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yamla, I did leave a reason to be unblocked. I am not a spamming company/individual. All of the information that I had linked yesterday is VERY relevant to each page and to our local community. Can you please have someone review my request and get back to me as soon as possible. Thank You.

unblock Please! edit

The reasons your contributions were judged spam are:

  • Blatant conflict of interest. See WP:COI
  • WP:SPAM, How not to be a spammer, #1, #5, #6
  • WP:EL, Links normally to be avoided, #4, #5
  • Several warnings on this page which you ignored.

It's hard to see exactly how you missed this, particularly the conflict of interest. --Yamla 13:49, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yamla, Since I am new to Wikipedia, I can understand why this is. Can you please explain to me what would be the best way to post information to the pages then? Just to clarify, there are pages out there for specific towns that have external links to their local newspapers. Can you please explain why this is ok for some towns but not the towns that I tried to link yesterday? This is why I'm getting confussed. If I want to merely go in and put the link to the town specific page on our site, how would be the best way to do this? Also, in the external links on almost EVERY page on Wikipedia is simply another source that people can get their information. That is what I am trying to do in providing a link to the public's local newspaper for their own specific town. I will not post to any of our articles on our site unless I can cite it and it is relevant. However, for now, is it possible for me to just put our link on the town specific pages for their own local newspaper and their own specific town? Thank You!

If you want a link added to your own site, you should go to the article's discussion page and discuss the matter there. If the consensus of the editors is that the link should be added, someone else will add it to the main article. --Yamla 14:08, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yamla, OK, I can understand that now. So for everypage that I want to add a link too, I would have to post the reason why it would be a good add on the discussion page first and then have the editor approve it so I can post? ~ Tracy

Best to simply have them add the link if they think it appropriate. Also, you will have to disclose your conflict of interest, but that's just a matter of noting that it is your web site. --Yamla 14:35, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Yamla, I have a quick question though...what is the best way to disclose. Do I have to write somewhere in there that my conflict of interest is that I work for SouthCoastToday.com? Or is the conflict of interest that the link is to SouthCoastToday.com? Thanks, Tracy

Yeah, just include the fact that you work for SouthCoastToday.com when you bring it up on the article discussion page. No need to be any more formal than that. The key point is that people discussing whether or not to add the link will know that it is an employee who is asking for the link to be added. --Yamla 15:05, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
