( EWULU & HER CULTURE AT A GLANCE ) The culture of the great Ewulu Ogbodume, please this text stands to be modified or corrected no criticism, call the author to add or remove phrases before he sends it to Goggle for update. Few Cultural habits and performances of Ewulu people, as told by his late father Mr. Cavin Kadiene Chukuma, of Ewulu second to the oldest person at Ewulu by time he passed on in 2016, and of Blessed memory.Ewulu people have numerous cultural habits similar to, and embraced by the Anioma Culture in the Delta region of Aniocha South LGA of Delta State of Nigeria, the following are few, IGO MMO ASHUA This “ Igo nmmo ashua “ ( annual prayers and worship ) is to the Almighty God the King of Kings, and of course to other gods of the Land, generally for protection, good omens ( happenstances) and for bounty agricultural harvest in the land, the OBI and council, the Oshele Umomi and the Elders and Ozo titled men ( Chiefs ) leads this prayers in the land, on the other hand Elders and titled chiefs who are Christians book masses in their individual churches as the case may be to make this yearly Prayers. IWA IJI The ( new Yam festival ), the eating of the new yam usually marks the end of the years farming season ( Harvest ) this eating of the new yam festival is also marked with thanksgiving prayers to the god of agriculture ( IFEJIOKWU ) believed to have helped the farmers turn in a bountiful harvest for the year, as the Oshele ( River Umomi Chief Priest ) & the OBI roasts the first yam in the community, there will be jubilations in every quarters as everyone in their homes follows suit in this great festivities. ISHE FESTIVAL ( ISHE Carnival ) when we mention Ishe Festival we must also mention ( UMU-ALAMUZOR ) of Ewulu as being the first custodian to experience the great festival. The Umu Alamuzor & the Okpala of Ewulu formally prays and does the necessary traditional rites before the Ishe festival starts, the origin of this great festival from the archives hold that Ayor the son of Eze Ogbe of Ewulu, a descendant of Alamuzo quarters of Ewulu left for Aboh on a herbal medicine delivery journey usually referred to as ( MBIA ) Ayor a prominent herbalist and great hunter embarked on this "mbia" following an invitation from the people of Aboh to cure a great hero (an indigene of Aboh) who was seriously ill. Ayor using his traditional medical knowledge in the field of herbal medicine cured the sick man, remember Ayor is from Umu Ayor Umualamuzo, Ogbe-Ose Village, Ewulu, when he cured their hero, he was asked what shall they offer as payment to him, as the ancient town of Aboh erupted into wild jubilation having tried all they could to cure the sick man previously to no avail but a man has come from a far away land of Ewulu to do the needful, they asked him to request whatever he wants, Ayor being a wise man asked the people of Aboh to give him the Knowledge & the traditional rites format of the great Ishe festival which he happened to have witnessed during his stay at Aboh, that was how he was handed the great traditional rites, till date the ( UMU-ALAMUZOR ) quarters of Ewulu is still the custodians of the great Ishe festival. The festival also relates to appeasing the water goddess ( UMOMI ) as it takes place on the waters, this festival is a remarkable event in Ewulu history, and carries with it several colorful events that attracts all an sundry, brief explanation would be made here as the ISHE events carries so many traditional rites and performances of the Ewulu people, this colorful events starts with ( IKA ISHE ) with many Canon / Gun Shots with ( AGBAKWULO ) Slogans as thundering shouts of this slogans takes the air every time these cannons goes off, with decorations outside people’s homes with so many colored banners ( OKOLOTO ) in the town, these activities continues through out the period until the whole city dances side by side on the river Umomi canoeing and dancing with tied canoes 🛶, travels to neighboring villages are suspended within the wait period as it is thought that spirits have come into the town for the festival too, within the peak and the last nine days of this festival ( OGE ETO ) precisely many group performances are featured in the city center of the town intermittently with visitors seeing their favorite groups in feature, some of these groups are mentioned here not all of them, the OBI and Council being the Last to make the Walk of fame from the palace to the city center with the ( EGWU UMU OBI ) and then to ( OSE ISHE ) bringing to the end this great festival, there are so many side attractions including the great Igbu ( AGANA ) group, the warriors who are led by the ( ODUGWU OF EWULU ) who are believed to ward off the evil spirits back to the ( Forbidding Forrest ) ( EJO OFIA ) These group are the warriors known as the OGBU people who have taken the AGANA Lesser title, during ISHE FESTIVAL this ichu -nmoo is done by a particular group of people including Odogwu ObereMike OkeiPatrick OdimegwuOheOlololoBokitaIneneBenjamin Ogbakani ( Unbreakable) also the Odogwu of Ewulu ( Chief TUGWA ) which the author being one of the Igbu ( AGANA) people have personally followed some of these mentor warriors in this performance of warding off the spirits, their sole reserves and responsibilities of ichu -nmmo is very significant to ward off the evil spirits to the evil forest, certain cleansing procedures are also performed when there are overwhelming atrocities in the town irrespective of ishe festival ( for example such as the ritual killing of one of our Ewulu daughter recently in the bush ) this time the ( EGINE ) the oldest and titled woman in the town leads this type of ichu nmmo as a cleansing ritual in the town, most of us who remembers the Biafra and Nigerian war saw with our eyes the happenstances at IYI NTE stream on the purported request for Ewulu massacre as it happened at Isheagu, Ogwashi-Ukwu & Asaba, this writer lost his baptismal Father in the name of Mr. Goldsmith Okwuewuna of blessed memory of Isheagu at the Isheagu Massacre, the same Massacre was meant to happen at Ewulu, details are reserved on requests.
