Did I do that wrong?

Kirksville Daily Express
Hi Willie. Just a heads up. I have access to some local history books (I'm from the Kirksville area) and other resources, so in the next few days I'll try to flesh out the Kirksville Daily Express Wiki you created today with info on its founding, publishers over the years (it was owned for a century or so by one extended family) etc.. It had long been on my mental "to do" list but just never had gotten around to creating an article for it, so thanks! I'll also see what I can scare up on the Macon Chronicle-Herald too. - Oh, please do! I'm working my way through List of newspapers owned by GateHouse Media creating articles for all the dailies but unfortunately most of them are the barest of stubs -- for some reason GateHouse papers usually don't have very robust "about us" pages on their websites. Glad to see "local" wikieditors taking an interest. Not sure how widely your history books range, but GateHouse has several titles in Missouri - including in Chillicothe, Moberly, Hannibal and Mexico. The Republic
You're correct on the B County category — we do not place an article in both Category A and Category B if one of the two be the parent (or grandparent, etc.) of the other. Just imagine how full some of our upper-level geographic categories, such as Category:United States, would be otherwise. I can't find a good reasoning summary here, but Commons:COM:OVERCAT (which has the same basis in practice and policy) is a very good explanation of why the newspaper shouldn't be in both Category:Columbus and Category:Bartholomew County.
As for the media in Indianapolis — Columbus is not an Indianapolis suburb or exurb, but the principal city of a different metropolitan area. This category also wouldn't be appropriate for media originating in Carmel, Danville, or Greenwood, since they're separate municipalities; this isn't "Media in the Indianapolis television market" or "Media in the Indianapolis metropolitan area". - Certainly you can understand my confusion when our own article at Media in Indianapolis contains all radio and television stations in the Indianapolis market, not only those in Indianapolis proper or in the Indianapolis MSA. As a random sampling I looked at the eight FM stations with frequencies 100 or above and found that less than half are based in Indianapolis; and two of them are based in Danville and Greenwood, which are places you say would not be covered by "Media in Indianapolis". Both of them (WJJK and WTLC-FM) are categorized in "Category:Radio stations in Indianapolis, Indiana", a child category of "Category:Media in Indianapolis, Indiana". I don't find it intuitive that we would use a broad definition of Indianapolis ("Indy market") for broadcast outlets but a narrow definition ("Indy proper") for print. I can understand a rationale for it (I assume one can pick up a Greenwood radio station on a radio in Indianapolis, whereas one is less likely to find a Greenwood newspaper for sale on most Indianapolis newsstands), but I can also think of rationale against it -- why have different sections of what it ostensibly the same list use different geographic criteria?
- I accept your FYI that the Indianapolis MSA is 10 counties. For your information, please note that the Wikipedia article on the subject, Indianapolis metropolitan area, notes that it "is often described as the Nine-County Region". ``` t b w i l l i e ` $1.25 ` 00:18, 22 July 2012 (UTC)
- And regarding Commons:COM:OVERCAT, the examples given there tend to counsel against categorizing overly broadly (e.g. putting photos of every man in a "Category:Men" -- to what end?), or double-listing in parent and child articles. The first would apply if I had placed The Republic (Columbus) in "Category:United States" -- but of course I didn't; I agree with you, that would be idiotic, and furthermore would serve the reader no good. The goal of Wikipedia categorization is to serve the reader and place things where they are likely to be sought. Looking at Category:Bartholomew County, I would expect to find a countywide news source included, and if I were a novice to Wikipedia's geographic category nesting scheme, I would not click on "Category:Geographic places in Bartholomew County" expecting to eventually, two categories later, and assuming I knew the name of the county seat, end up in the right city category.
- As an aside -- I hope I'm not coming off as being nitpicky or argumentative here. I've edited and started several articles about small-city newspapers, so issues around categorization are issues that I have faced several times in the past and expect to do so again. - Our metro area categorisation here goes with official boundaries, because we need a substantive basis rather than "sometimes described as" for making boundaries. I understand what you mean about the categorisation, but we have always employed the rule that articles should not be in parent categories and subcategories, and this is no different.
