Adoption?
Hi ToastGuard! I noticed you are listed as someone interested in adopting a Wikipedian. I am a Wikipedian looking for adoption.
- How did I get here to your talk page? Following another Wikipedian's edit history led me to this Adoption page. I'm not new to Wikipedia or Wikipedia's Policies and Guidelines. I am an inexperienced editor. So I can find my way around but still get surprised at what I find.
- What are my goals? I wish to contribute to both the Military History WikiProject and to the smaller Textile Arts WikiProject.
- The former is crowded with a ton of folks with strong opinions haha. Nothing wrong with that, but a recent encounter made me realize that I might be jumping into the deep end. Really admire how this community's cohesion, but I need a hand navigating the social context. My particular interest is in WWI, but I'm sticking to copy-editing there for now.
- The latter is... practically empty. I don't mind. It's a welcome respite from the madding crowd over in MILHIST. But it's going to take a lot of groundwork to build this up from its current lackluster state. Perfect place to really get into the knitty gritty.
- So why you? I am contacting you because we happen to both be interested in military history, and we both have programming experience (mine is more experience with Python, but I have used the Wikimedia API via curl and scripts). Not to go into too much detail, but I do natural language processing. I work with regexes frequently, but I could also apply some of the cooler new stuff which might come in handy. But that's probably not necessarily what's needed.

I will go at the pace you set, as all the activities are self guided, however I will respond to any questions or concerns promptly. Welcome to the CVUA program, I am here to teach you about vandalism and how to counter it. I will discuss with you as well as give you assignments on different topics designed to introduce you to CV. I will post assignments in this area, you will write your answers underneath and not in the same line. I would suggest also familiarizing yourself with the wikitext editor as well as how wikicode works. I will archive each assignment in different archive pages where you will be able to view them on your own. Tools
Before we start, I wanted to show you some useful tools for counter-vandalism work which can be used by any editor. You can use all of these, none of these, or some of these. I don't mind, these links are just for your convenience. You may have already installed some of these in the past.
Twinkle
Twinkle is a very popular gadget which is helpful for a variety of tasks. To install it, go here and tick the box that says Twinkle. Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "save". When you refresh the page, a "TW" tab will be available on every page, next to the "More" tab. Scrolling over the TW tab will show a list of modules you can use on the particular page. Twinkle has a large number of useful modules, including but not limited to, one which can be used to warn users, one which can be used to request page protection, one which can be used to suggest a page is deleted, and many many more helpful features. It also adds a non-admin "rollback" feature on all diff pages. I highly suggest you enable Twinkle, as it's incredibly useful and poses no risk of harming your account.
Lupin's Anti-vandal tool
Lupin's Anti-vandal tool is extremely helpful for monitoring recent changes in real time. To install it, simply add the following to your common.js.
importScript('User:Lupin/recent2.js');
Refresh the page and you'll find 5 new links on your toolbar (on the left side of the page, underneath "interaction"). These links can be used to better monitor recent changes for possible vandalism.
IRC channels
IRC is an internet chat program. There are several channels on IRC that can be used to monitor vandalism. #cvn-wp-en connect is probably the most useful. Visit Wikipedia:IRC/Tutorial for information on how to connect to channels.
Navigation popups allow you to hover over links and see a brief preview of the page being linked to. One feature of navigation popups is that when you're at recent changes and hover over "diff" links, you'll have the ability to revert the most recent edit, useful for undoing vandalism. To install navigation popups, go here and tick the box that says Navigation popups. Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "save". Refresh the page and navigation popups will be enabled.
Now that you've read these, reply below with which scripts you installed/what you signed up for. I don't mind how many you installed, or if you installed none, it's just so I know and can set tasks using those scripts. Also note that there are many more advanced scripts out there, but they'll only be available to you when you have more experience.

Just a heads-up. Following the advice of the BotApprovals group you linked to, I wrote a script to update my user status that runs as a 5 minute cronjob. It only affects one of my User pages (e.g., valid under WP:BOTUSERSPACE and WP:BOTSCRIPT of the bot policy), and it only updates the page with my status if certain conditions are met (e.g., my last Wikipedia edit was more than 10 minutes ago and I'm listed as online). Minor Note on Mentoring
Hello, ToastGuard. I believe I encountered you in a previous AfD and passingly looked at your WP:PERM NPP request (which is still on my watchlist...). I've seen your comments at User talk:ToastGuard/Orcanami/Archive 4, but IMO not sure if you misunderstood, but some can be confusing, or at least worded confusingly. For example, per WP:UNREGISTERED, they cannot upload files or images
, which is a bit different to what you wrote. Besides, you might be confusing WP:NPP with Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Participants. NPP only lets the user to patrol a page, which means that they state that they have checked the page and it has no obvious problems that could result in deletion. However, only being a Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Participants gives an editor ability to review (approve/decline/reject/comment) drafts. Besides, WP:AUTOPATROLLED is not used to bypass AfC, which could be done for any autoconfirmed account. It only lets the user's pages to be marked as automatically patrolled on the new pages list and hence indexable to search engines. Moreover, the pending changes reviwer is for pages placed in WP:PENDING protection, not semi-protection (WP:SEMIPROTECTION. Just want to let you know this minor comment, many thanks! Before we begin the learning portion of the CVUA program I would like you to complete a get-to-know-you form. This is just so I can better understand you and help you learn.
1.) What is your end-goal on Wikipedia (what do you wish to accomplish)?
-Just to make Wikipedia a better place, Maybe to become an Admin, But that takes a while.
2.) What are some of your hobbies(fishing, reading, etc.)?
-I like to read, I am currently reading War and Peace, My version is (Not Including The translator's note and epilogue) is 1,256 pages long, and I like to play the video game, The Sims 2 & 3, Also I am trying to improve in chess.
3.) What are some of your biggest brags (Don't be shy, what in your perspective is the coolest thing you've done)?
-When I first started, I updated the entire List of cities in Pennsylvania (Which is my home state) list.
4.) What is your overall attitude towards wikipedia and editing on it?
-Wikipedia is *mostly true, Some people still are hellbent that Wikipedia is almost completely false, Maybe it was in the 2000s, but things change, and I feel like even the small things I do slightly contribute to that, And it makes me happy to volunteer on an Educational non-profit, since I believe everyone should access education.
5.) How would you improve Wikipedia?
-Start off small, then make big ones, like making or completely changing Wikipedia articles, But I feel I could improve on doing that
6.) When are you the most active on Wikipedia, and do you have anything that restricts the time you might have on it?
-No, I have plenty of time.

- I'd like a go to person to help me:
- Navigate the site generally
- Understand what is a reasonable position to take in certain circumstances, particularly in potentially controversial areas (see for example Beira's Place Talk). It's easy to get sucked into these things and I have found that there are sometime vested interests in places I wouldn't have even expected. I want to keep the encyclopedia perspective to the fore in talk and articles. I need more knowledge and 'professionalism' to achieve that.
- Ditto with RfCs
- I'd also like to improve articles. See for example my talk page on Enclosure and Inclosure I was also going to do some work on possibly something innocuous like the Algerian Green Dam to get some more structured editing experience. I started but found it more complex than I expected. I'm no IT wiz.
- Citations are something I have been doing. I'm not sure why we let so much stuff be posted that people can't be bothered to support with appropriate sources. I have added quite a few but sometimes when I am researching I find that the information I find actually contradicts the existing text. I leave it now when that happens as I'm not sufficiently confident to interfere. If I start rewriting I'd like, in the early days, someone to run that sort of thing by - so I don't do more harm than good. Vandalism and recent changes patrolling also interest me. I have done a tiny bit of that but also need guidance both practical and editorial.

Article rewrite
Hi.
I selected an article to improve to help develop my editing abilities. I chose one that couldn't really be made worse and this isUser:Lukewarmbeer/sandboxs what I have come up with. If you can cast an eye over it and see :
If I have made any drastic errors?
What I should do about the copyright on the images - particularly this one https://pin.it/7tJ8teY which I would like to use. The others I think are in Commons so I can use?
What more should I include in the Bibliography or is that enough for now?

- @Lukewarmbeer, I have not noticed anything immediately wrong with your rewrite. You can use any photo in the commons if you need to unless the picture you want to use has a license for being used elsewhere. I would take a look at any GA+ rated article and use it as an example. - @Lukewarmbeer, I have looked at the edit in question and have found that it works for me, so any issue accessing it is likely client-side for you. Furthermore, the information in the tweet meets the criteria of WP:TWEET. I recommend allowing the IP user to redo that edit, or to simply revert it yourself.
