Adrianne Wadewitz Memorial edit-a-thons

Adrianne Wadewitz edit-a-thons in Southern New England

As you may have already heard, the Wikipedia community lost an invaluable member of the community last month. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows: May 21st at Northeastern University's Snell Library, in the Digital Scholarship Commons on the second floor May 22nd at Brown University's Rockefeller Library, in the Digital Scholarship Lab June 25th at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (exact location TBA), where we will also be hosting a "how to conduct an edit-a-thon" session beforehand We hope that you will be able to join us, whether you are an experienced editor or are using Wikipedia for the first time. Notes on notability

Hi Tkfy7cf,

Based on the handful of articles you've submitted for AfD, I think you might have misunderstood the use of notability as it's used as a term of art here. The bar is much lower than you might expect: If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list. (from WP:NOTABILITY). In practice, sustained news coverage of an individual pretty much guarantees notability (in the wikipedia sense). As a side note, the fact that an article might read as self-promotional is not grounds for deletion. If the subject is notable, then the article can be tagged and (hopefully, eventually) fixed. Most of the article discussions at AfD focus on notability; we also delete hoax articles, patent nonsense, etc., but most of those are taken care of in the WP:CSD process instead of at WP:AfD.

Don't let this put you off from nominating and participating, but you might want to spend some time reading through existing AfDs to see what kinds of arguments are effective and what kinds of articles end up getting deleted. I made a couple of spectacular mistakes when I first started participating but eventually figured it out. No harm done.
