John Small senior

Hi, Tintin. The issue about the start of first-class cricket is rumbling on and I might as well tell you that I have written to the ACS committee requesting that the matter is given priority at the next AGM. In particular, they must disassociate themselves from 1801 which is absurd: that's very POV, I know!  ;-)

Anyway, Small's century is the second one definitely known of and the quality of the teams in that match were undeniably top-class at the time. The only known century before his was scored by John Minshull in 1769 in a match of very dubious quality. Consensus among people I've spoken or written to is that Minshull's century was made in a minor match.

I have not encountered one person who agrees that 1801 was the starting point of first-class cricket and I have not encountered anyone who thinks Small did not score a first-class century. The problem is that the ACS has left 1801 "up in the air" pending further research and so we do not have any clear definition of the timespan of first-class cricket. We have made some progress this year by getting the scorecards from 1744 to 1800 loaded onto CricketArchive where the games are classified as major or minor. All the Hambledon games are major but the Minshull game is minor. It is agreed amongst all the involved parties (i.e., there is a working group of six people who all make frequent historical and statistical contributions to the ACS) that any match currently categorised as major will go into the overall first-class record as soon as an accord can be reached with the ACS as a body. That is why I am rattling the committee's cage. We shall see how things progress.

If you are unhappy with the use of the term first-class cricket in connection with 18th Century cricket, I would suggest you change "first-class" to "major" or even "top-class" so that the terminology is vague without losing the impact. I would have no problem with that at all.

I have spoken to more than one person who agrees with my view that John Small was the greatest batsman of all time until WG came along. Someone (I forget who) published an alltime England XI and Small was in it (so was WG naturally): I would say he probably deserved to be. Hmm....

You cannot use that either. It comes from http://www.indiadaily.com/editorial/06-06b-04.asp and is copyrighted unless the site specifically says that it is in the public domain. Where is wikipedia going?

I presume you mean by having a known list of trusted editors you don't have to worry about checking everything last thing on your cricket watch-list. My quizzing feats

I appeared on Radio in early 1990s when in school (don't remember the exact year). I then appeared on CNBC's Complete Manager Contest 1999 in the regional finals. I was eliminated early (partly due to all those glaring lights and cameras pointed at me) representing my college. I try to participate on quizzes, though right now I'm less active there and it's been more than a year since I last participated in one. How about you? You like quizzes too? Syed Mohammed Hadi

Vanakkam Tintin. Nalla yekkara? That's all the Tamil I know. Syed Mohammed Hadi is my great grandfather. My father's mother's dad. My father Syed Asad Akbar tended to him towards the end of his life when he was battling cancer and shared all his memories with him before he died. My father's mother Zainab Akbar née Hadi married her first cousin Masood Akbar who was Syed Mohammed Hadi's brother Syed Ali Akbar's son. I know the last names are different but in Shia Islamic culture, if you are "Syed" last names don't matter. BTW we are Abidi Syeds so technically our last name should have been XYZ Abidi (from the fourth Imam). I don't know how word of mouth references are verified. Maybe you're not aware that this list is generated automatically from List of West Indian Test cricketers. So you need to make the edits on the latter page (and also on List of West Indian ODI cricketers if applicable), otherwise they will get overwritten when List of Test cricketers is next regenerated.
