San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park

Much thanks for getting photos for the historic sites in and around Leon County. When you get a chance, might you get photos of the park above? It's one of the few NHLs in Florida without photos. I was gonna get shots on my recent Easter weekend roadtrip, but by the time I got there, it was 9 PM on Sunday. I'm going to visit it myself at some point, b/c it's a a triple threat (NRHP, NHL and state park). But that prolly won't be until the fall at the earliest. So if you could get there any sooner, it would be great. Keep up the good work, on the photos and the museums list. Now, to upload photos of the Appleton (outside, at least) I took today. Thanks for the kind words, Ebyabe. I find myself at San Marcos de Apalache probably about once a year, with camera in hand. Trouble is, I'm always looking for nature pictures rather than structures. And, in truth, the remnants of the old fort are not very impressive or photogenic. I'll probably swing by in the next couple of months, maybe sooner, and will certainly get some sort of photo of the place for the article. (Now, back to looking for museums to add to the list!) Inclusion criteria for List of museums

Hey man, howzit going? Take a look at the inclusion criteria for Talk:List of museums. I changed the criteria on the international list to one similar to that used in the state lists of museums in the United States. Please comment whether you agree or not with using that criteria for the international list or should we use some other criteria? The reason I added this criteria is because museums are being removed from the list so I thought I would try & define an inclusion criteria, but would like to get more comments. Thanks! A land snail from Ohio

Hi Tim Ross. Maybe you already looked at these images? Forgive me if we already asked you this, but do you have any idea what this species of land snail is? There are several different shots of it in the series "Ohio nature (Set)" if you browse one way and the other. If we can put an ID on one of the images we can use it on WP. It's clearly one of the larger polygyrids, Invertzooo, but I don't feel confident in putting a name on it without some sort of look at the aperture. My off-the-cuff guess is either Mesodon thyroidus or Triodopsis tridentatus. Both are pretty common in Ohio. You're right, though, that it would be a nice photo to be able to use. I would be grateful if someone would tell me the proper way to use a photo from another language version of Wikipedia. Templates

Hi. I noticed that when you recently changed List of Florida State University alumni into a redirect, you added the text "{{R all entries in List of Florida State University alumni already in List of Florida State University people}}" after the redirect. Just to let you know, the {{ }} symbols have a special meaning in Wikipedia. They transclude the contents of another page, usually in the Template: namespace, into the page where they are used. The text between the symbols has to be the title of a page; putting random text inside {{ }} doesn't do anything. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 16:45, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Russ. I fear I actually made a number of redirects using that same model. I hope I didn't cause any problems by doing it the way I did. Actually, I'm not too experienced at redirects, so went to WP:R to find the proper template, or at least what I thought was the proper template:

"You can and should also give a reason for a redirect:

#REDIRECT [[University of Cambridge]]{{R from alternative name}}"

Snow in Tampa pic in Florida article

I agree that the photo looks nice there and personally have no problem with it, but I've seen the fair use police at work. So as I edit here and there, I try to reduce the instances of useful fair use photos since those which are used in "too many" articles often become targets for deletion.

I gave a thought to the fair use issue, too, Zen8r. You may well be right. Since this photo is already in several other places perhaps it has been deemed acceptable. Runaway Million

Hi Tim, thanks for helping out with speedy deletion tagging, and you were right, this one was promotional and I deleted it. I'd like to suggest that you try WP:Twinkle (either the full configuration or just the one extra tab that helps you tag for speedy deletion) if you want to do more speedy tagging. It will mark the page as patrolled (currently broken but we're working on it), which makes life easier for the new page patrollers, and give proper notification to the creator, and give an edit summary that lets me know I don't have to double-check your work, and add the proper tag to the page. Hey, thanks for the advice about Twinkle, Dan! You may well be right, that I would find it helpful. Oddly, I suspect that I already have it. I seem to recall adding that sort of code a long time ago, but then never being able to find the details of how it worked. My page shows some cryptically named tabs, such as "csd", "rpp", "xfd", and others, which I believe came from that experiment. Is there a comparatively easy way to add a current version, and to actually learn how to use the tabs? (I'm using Safari, on a Mac.) My computer expertise, I fear, is not too great. Much obliged. Thanks for your questions!

I deleted the map from the infobox because it's a map of Halifax, not a map of Nathalie. I've produced a separate dot map for it, because you're clearly correct in saying that it needs one. As it's at least ten miles from Halifax (if I read my atlas correctly), it really shouldn't be represented by a Halifax map.

As for the population: unless you have specific boundaries for a community, you can't say how many people live there. Perhaps 5,500 people live in a vague area, but where are the boundaries of that area? We need boundaries for verifiability, and Hometown USA clearly isn't the kind of source that would go locally and delineate clear boundaries — not to mention the fact that it really wouldn't be that reliable for determining those boundaries. The only way that we can reasonably get a population figure for the community is to use its ZIP Code Tabulation Area — for a map, go to http://factfinder.census.gov/leg1/38/129914138.gif; you can see that it includes much of northern Halifax County. It's really broad (and might be the source for the 5,500 population claim by Hometown USA), but clearly is far larger than just the community of Halifax.

A "CDP" is a census-designated place. You're from Florida, yet you write about a place in Virginia: are you familiar with the areas around Halifax County? The closest CDP to Nathalie is probably Rustburg, the county seat for Campbell County. You can also look at Category:Census-designated places in Florida by county: nearly every Florida county has one. Nyttend (talk) 12:06, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

• Books extension enabled

A very large and widespread CopyVio problem!

I want to alert all Project Gastropods staff to the fact that we currently have a very major CopyVio problem which compromises the integrity of the encyclopedia, and opens the door for legal action against Wikipedia. This problem is spread across a huge number of gastropod articles (approximately 800 to 1,000) and it also spills over into the other molluscan groups. I am asking ask everyone who is available to help out with this in whatever way they can, but please do so in an organized and unified fashion so we all know what is going on. It seems that all of the articles in the Category: Molluscs of New Zealand [1] contain a great deal of text that is copied verbatim or almost verbatim from the 1979 book by Powell, New Zealand Mollusca. I have had no experience in dealing with a crisis of this magnitude. Any help that any of you can offer or suggest is more than welcome. Invertzoo (talk) 21:16, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

This is really bad news. Put me down as a willing helper, Invertzoo. I do not, unfortunately, have any sort of ready access to Powell's book, so can't be sure exactly what portions of what articles are the problem. If someone could figure out an easy way to mark those parts of a bunch of articles, I will be happy to dive in and erase, revise, or stubify as needed/possible. First sentence is OK in the gastropod articles

Hi Tim, Just wanted to say that you can add the first sentence intact to each article, as it is OK as it is. It is not a CopyVio, as it is in a very different form to the way it is in the Powell book, I am talking about, like this:

"Acteon milleri is a species of small sea snail, a predatory marine gastropod mollusc in the family Acteonidae, the barrel bubble snails."
