Here's a template version of your banner edit

(The file name is Template:On OOMandM).

You can prepend it to (the beginning of) talk pages using WP:AWB.

Do you have AWB yet? And do you know how to use it?

P.S.: I changed the name of the outline, in case you were wondering who did it. ;)

Outline of motorcycles and motorcycling edit

I've done some work on it. It needs an annotation after each em-dash, and it needs the topics that are listed under "other" to be placed in the outline somewhere.

There are still motorcycle topics on Wikipedia that are not included. We need to hunt them down. Articles in lists (such as motorcycle manufacturers) don't need to be listed individually in the outline.

Hi Thruxton, i have a photo of my BSA Thunderbolt and thought it might be useful to have it as the image for the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BSA_Thunderbolt entry. Follow up... I have made some ref corrections and MoS tweaks for you (please have a look, for future reference). Unfortunately, I can't fix reference 2, which is: <ref>{{cite book|last1=Kemp|first1=Andrew|last2=De Cet|first2=Mirco|title=Classic British Bikes|year=2000|page 46|publisher=Abbeydale press|isbn=1-86147-136-X|page=160}}</ref> Only you can tell whether this means page 46 or page 160, and thus make the correction. Good news is, we are almost there. EdChem (talk) 10:27, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Sherril Huff edit

Please note that if you oppose the deletion of a page marked for proposed deletion, all you need to do is remove the {{proposed deletion/dated}} tag from the page. There is no need to create an unnecessary AfD page just to oppose a proposed deletion, as you did with Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sherril Huff. I have copied your comment to the talk page and nominated the AfD discussion for speedy deletion. —KuyaBriBriTalk 14:09, 3 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Digging tools edit

These tools help a great deal when you are trying to uncover everything Wikipedia has on subjects:

  • Grep — search pages titles using regexps.
  • CatScan — powerful search using categories, included templates, etc.

The main navigation footer template for a subject is often a treasure trove of links. Like this one:

I look forward to seeing the outline once you've completed it. It is well on the way to being well developed. Here is an example:

Citations, etc. edit

You are welcome.

In answer to your question, I don't bother with citations much - and focus most of my energies on building the outlines. Besides, the articles I've been copying the annotations from should already include citations, and when the text I select for an annotation has citations, I copy those over as well.

Via "click through" to the main article on each listed topic, the reader should have access to all the citations available on any given topic.

But, just like articles, the more citations the better - they strengthen the integrity of the information provided and offer the reader further research options. So, when I run across a citation in the encyclopedia that fits something in an outline, I insert it in the outline. But usually, the citation supports a descriptive statement, and I wind up using both!

I hope these tips help.

Sincerely, The Transhumanist 23:07, 15 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Outline development tip: pictures edit

I prefer to get pictures that are not displayed on the main article (or in the case of a double-subject title, the main articles), because providing different pics makes the outlines more interesting. The contents of an outline doesn't simply rehash the main article, and neither should its pictures.

At the bottom of every outline is a sisterlinks box, with a link to Wikimedia Commons. That website often has better pictures than those displayed in the main article.

Another good source for pics is the lesser trafficked articles on the subject.

While selecting pics, keep in mind that the more stunning the photographs, the better.

Some examples of outlines with good picture support include:

I hope this tip helps.

Sincerely, The Transhumanist 00:02, 16 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

P.S.: Another tip: to quickly browse all the outlines in the example list above, try Linky.

Kayaking on the Helford River
Thanks for these tips - you have some good suggestions for editors who want to develop Outlines, so it would be useful if you put them together into a Help file? (I tried searching for one but couldn't find it) I agree about the images - I've got loads of kayaking pictures so its just a matter of finding time to upload them. (The kayaker on the Helford river is me, by the way - at dawn, wondering how long it would take to kayak to Falmouth...) Cheers Thruxton (talk) 13:11, 16 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Request: a little each log-on edit

If each of us does an edit or three to each of these outlines each time we log on they'll be completed fairly soon, and painlessly.

Then they'll be great examples of sports outlines that other sports WikiProjects can use as models for outlines on their respective sports.

I look forward to seeing your expert touch on these (by comparison, I know next to nothing about them).

Thank you.

Have fun.

ZAP ALIAS Updated information edit

Greetings,

I saw that you have been editing a considerable large amount of articles on Bikes, I would like to "beg for your help" in one of the articles where I am trying to update with the consistent data available within different references about the 3 wheeled ZAP Alias.(not sure if these is in anyway of your interest, but I have to give it a try).

I do believe that a fresh pair of eyes will always be an asset to an ongoing project, and since I am currently accused of COI, in this message is a copy of my last contribution made at (Revision as of 08:03, 13 December 2010), which was deleted at (Revision as of 08:08, 13 December 2010).

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=ZAP_Alias&diff=402109086&oldid=401619154

Any inputs and suggestions on the link I have copied will be of great help.

Regards from Beijing,

Take a look at the history of ZAP Alias and ZAP (motor company) and you will see a series of edits by IP contributors, all of which have been badly referenced. Generally these are reprints of the company's own press releases and strive to show the company in a good light. My suspicion, given that the parent company is based in Beijing where these edits are coming from, is that all these edits are by the same person and that this person (who shows all the symptoms of being a single purpose account) is employed by the company - hence my COI observation. My recommendation to this person would be to a) come clean and b) register an account and c) you read both Wikipedia:Citing sources and WP:RS so that you understand how to insert proper references rather than bare URLs and also learn what a reliable source looks like. However, I'm glad you have brought this to Thruxton because I have an immense amount of respect for his work in Wikipedia and he may offer a fresh and different perspective to this, which I would welcome. --Biker Biker (talk) 11:18, 13 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Re: Biker Biker, I'm glad to see a balanced interest on this issue from you. I'm new to Wikipedia(editing) that is why I am sure I'll make mistakes. If I do something wrong, please let me know and give me as much information as possible so that I can make sure that not to make the same mistake again.

Tried to compare ZAP Alias wikipedia article data and all the available updates from which I find in a daily bases, and do think that Biker Biker, a Senior Wikipedia User, have been a bit overzealous undoing my contribution registered at (08:03, 13 December 2010), which was undone by (08:08, 13 December 2010). It seems that about half the time, the article could/should be undone hands down (nonsense, advert, copyright violation, etc) but the other half I have a hard time to agree with your repeated contributions to the ZAP Alias article (saw your historial on it). Of those editions, many just need a rewrite (of a very small article) or someone to actually take the time and check for references on the notability of a subject.

Expecting that two, three or more set of eyes and fresh brains will allow this situation to reach a milder stage in which we all can find feasible and very much justified dichotomies to put into debate. In my opinion my last edition shouldn't be one of them.

My suggestion to Biker Biker is to PLEASE review the update I did and PLEASE do compare to what you decided to add on your subsequent 4 contribution.

Thank you all for your time, effort and Thruxton's "TALK SPACE", your fresh perspective will be incredibly more than welcome.

I do not own a bike but I do sense that there is something within this article that does not make any justice to the vehicle information currently available.

Your original article was redirected from its listing without diacritical marks to the Czech version. Either version will pull up the article. You get two bites at the apple (lol).

My experience has been that English language publishers cannot deal with diacritical marks, so they Anglicize names. In such cases, I insert the diacritics as soon as I can find them elsewhere in WP.

Welcome to the outlines wikiproject! edit

Thruxton, thank you for joining up. I look forward to working with you.

There are two main thrusts right now. Refining existing outlines and building new ones. The area currently under construction is culture, with development presently focused on sports. Here's what we have in this vein so far:

The current strategy is to complete these to as high of quality as we can, and then present them as examples to the WikiProjects of the sports that are missing, starting with the most major sports among those.

The above outlines go a step further than most of our outlines, by including descriptive annotations which assist in topic identification and selection. These assist in rapidly familiarizing the reader with the subject, and in choosing where to browse the subject further.

For these outlines to reach the high level of quality that we are shooting for, it is crucial that the missing topics, links, and annotations be added in. The finishing touch is then pictures.

Then we can move forward with an effective recruiting drive for the building of outlines of the remaining sports, starting with the most major:

And perhaps expand the Outline of bicycles to the Outline of bicycles and cycling.

Keep in mind that discussions concerning the nature and future direction of the project occur occasionally, and to help the team keep up with these please report them and post links to them at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Outline of knowledge as you find them. Visit that page often to check out what's going on.

This is a large project with a huge scope, so there's lots to be done and lots going on behind the scenes. I've run out of time now, but will bring you up to speed as I find more time. In the meantime, I hope the above material is enough to keep you occupied.  :)

I look forward to working with you!

If you have any questions, any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask. I will help in any way that I can. The Transhumanist 19:01, 1 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
