A barnstar for you! edit

The Press Barnstar
For the incredibly interesting article you wrote on Gamergate for the WP:VG newsletter. Brustopher (talk) 08:36, 14 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Thanks. I appreciate it. I only wish I'd had a bit more time to edit and process it. I'd originally intended a longer article and I feel this one comes off as a little disjointed. Anyway I'm pleased if people found it interesting. It's a topic that the WP:VG Newsletter really couldn't just ignore forever, and a large debt of gratitude is owed to the interviewees who agreed to speak with me. -Thibbs (talk) 10:25, 14 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • You're really good with the interviews. I hope you'll do more pieces like this in the future, perhaps working the interview itself as the story? czar 15:07, 14 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
    • Hah, I'm glad you think so, Czar, because you're up for interview next quarter! -Thibbs (talk) 22:26, 14 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
      • Make it a feature about the mean, mean deletionists! ;)  · Salvidrim! ·  23:05, 14 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
        • Not a bad idea. I could see a Newsletter piece on the effects of deletionism on editor retention and how best to foster a nurturing environment for new editors. But I am probably going to sit out a quarter or two. I've written 3 of the last 4 newsletter features and if I'm not careful the readership will soon tire of my droning voice. -Thibbs (talk) 23:21, 14 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
... I think he was joking. And for what it's worth, I can't picture how the newsletter would tire of hearing an original report from you each quarter, but that's your call. czar 15:58, 15 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yeah I figured that, but it's still not a bad idea. If you grow out a proper mustachio in the next few months and learn to twirl it then you could play the part of the villain. -Thibbs (talk) 01:17, 16 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

EBSCO application? edit

Hi Thibbs, just curious - has my EBSCO application been declined? I haven't heard back from any Library admin, so just wanted to confirm present status. Thanks --Peripatetic (talk) 12:33, 16 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Peripatetic: Sorry for the slow progress. You applied several weeks ago and your patience is greatly appreciated. This is a new partnership for TWL and the behind-the-scenes set-up process is taking a little longer than anticipated. Your request has not been denied and I will be working through and processing more accounts today. Please hang in there. -Thibbs (talk) 13:21, 16 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Editing from a previously blocked IP address edit

Hello, Thibbs. You pinged me and Gial Ackbar at User talk:76.188.18.166. For what it's worth, here are my observations. The IP address 76.188.18.166 was used in the past by the blocked editor Johnwest1999. Blocks on both that IP address and the account were evaded by using the IP address 65.182.126.23, which has now been blocked for a year by Gilliam, and 76.188.18.166 is back in use. There have been only three edits from 76.188.18.166 since its latest block ended, which does not provide much evidence, but there is just about enough similarity to previous edits to encourage me to think the IP address may well be being used by Johnwest1999 again, but not enough for me to take any action. I think for the moment just watching editing from 76.188.18.166 is the thing to do. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 10:47, 19 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Game Zero edit

Thanks for the tip on Wikipedia:WikiProject Websites/Early web history task force. I have not run across that group before so I'll definitely take a look. I really appreciate you keeping this issue in mind and frankly I was quite surprised to see your message. Thanks again. Cheers! BcRIPster (talk) 20:23, 21 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and just as a side note while I'm here. I've started a process of scanning all of the press materials the magazine received between 1992-1998. I have several thousand pages of documents and part of getting them scanned in, I'm working out a home for them to live online (it may go under the GZ domain, but still undecided). Lot's of really cool stuff in here that I think people would enjoy seeing. I've also been slowly digging up old tapes and putting stuff on YouTube which includes the video footage of XBand announcing their partnership with Game Zero (at 1:14 Genesis video and 1:44 SNES video). BcRIPster (talk) 20:34, 21 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • Very cool! I'll take a look after work tonight. -Thibbs (talk) 12:47, 22 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
A couple more video links for you. I found a tape we shot at Shoshinkai 1995 and pulled off footage of the late Nintendo President Hiroshi Yamauchi as well as beta gameplay of the Mario 64... I also put up some beta gameplay of a previously unseen build of Resident Evil. I have such a stack of video to sort out. Good grief... BcRIPster (talk) 08:35, 5 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Help needed: Electronic Gaming Monthly Issue 233 edit

Hey there, Thibbs. I'm preparing some rewrites for Tales of Vesperia in my sandbox, and I've got a review from the issue above as part of the reception section. As I've heard that you have a copy of this issue, can you help me with this? --ProtoDrake (talk) 13:09, 1 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Help needed at DRN edit

You are receiving this message because you are signed up as a volunteer at the Dispute Resolution Noticeboard. We have a number of pending requests which need a volunteer to address them. Unless you are an inexperienced volunteer who is currently just watching DRN to learn our processes, please take a case. If you do not see yourself taking cases in the foreseeable future, please remove yourself from the volunteer list so that we can have a better idea of the size of our pool of volunteers; if you do see yourself taking cases, please watchlist the DRN page and keep an eye out to see if there are cases which are ready for a volunteer. We have recently had to refuse a number of cases because they were listed for days with no volunteer willing to take them, despite there being almost 150 volunteers listed on the volunteer page. ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. WP:AN edit

I not sure how you feel justified in calling other editors "deeply troubled" or a "fool", while at the same time complaining of their behaviour. but I will ask that you remove those attacks. Thank you. - theWOLFchild 15:47, 3 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

The "deeply troubled" comment was inadvisable. However the second part, in context, was "... make the perpetrator look like a fool ..." which was not actually calling you a fool. Regards — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:12, 3 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Easy for you say... you're not on the receiving end of the comment, whereas I clearly am. I think his message can just as easily be conveyed without that remark, hence my request for it to be removed still stands. - theWOLFchild 21:13, 3 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • @Thewolfchild: Yes, I had a change of heart shortly after posting the comment you've linked. I really didn't think it fair to paint you and the other editor with whom you were bickering with the same brush. You're both individuals and your edit histories deserve individual scrutiny. I think you will be pleased to learn that I have already refactored that comment several days ago. I don't think I'll remove my comment that "Severely anti-collegial behavior doesn't only make the perpetrator look like a fool, it drives away good editors", however, because it's a general statement with general applicability (as true for you as it is for the other editor, for me, or for anyone else). It's not uncommon for very angry and aggressive editors to act in such a way that they appear childish or foolish. That in itself is not a problem. It only becomes a problem when the editor is unable to learn from the feedback he is receiving. -Thibbs (talk) 21:28, 3 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Well, you still felt at one point that it was acceptable to refer to other editors as "deeply troubled". Now you claim you changed it because "the editors in question have different contribution histories"...? Not because it could be (and should've been) considered an attack? Whatever.
You certainly could use your "fool" statement in a "general" sense in other venues, but in this case it is specifically being applied to me. You claim to not see that, but it's also evident you don't give a crap about how your comments impact your fellow editors - one of the very things you seem to enjoy preaching about. But, whatever... change it or don't change it. You don't care. None of the dozen or so admins there care. And now, neither do I. Like I said, this whole experience has been 'enlightening'. I am now done with this matter. - theWOLFchild 22:21, 3 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • I understand that you are upset and now that I see that Cassianto has in fact retired I can see why you might think that my comment was specifically being applied to you. I do give you my word that I was unaware of Cassianto's retirement at the time I posted my comment, though. My concerns that aggression would drive others away was made with more of a mind toward new editors who might encounter that sort of thing. I will try to make a note of this at the AN thread later tonight after I get home from work. -Thibbs (talk) 23:00, 3 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

WPVG CSE clutter fixes edit

Wanted to toss these to you for discussion

  • http://www.gamasutra.com/view/pressreleases/ and http://www.mcvuk.com/press-releases/– maybe remove these from the main RS search and move them to the situational search? because they're only good as self-published sources (haven't been fact-checked by Gamasutra)
  • http://www.gamerevolution.com/game/ – these are always listings with no helpful info, but what are we even using from this site? /features/? /faq/? I'd also remove /screen/ [1] and /video/
  • www.metacritic.com/game/.../user-reviews and /trailers and /details – we don't use comments from the first, the second isn't helpful to have as a link, and the third consists of "credits provided by GameFAQs"; in fact, I'd even reduce Metacritic to only search for the /critic-reviews page, if possible, because that cuts out the stuff we don't use altogether (note: though I suppose we use original articles and rankings by Metacritic too, however sparingly)
  • Who supplies the info behind http://www.gry-online.pl/S016.asp?ID=29033 and http://www.gry-online.pl/encyklopedia-gier.asp?TEM=261&CZA=3 listings?
  • Listings like http://www.gry-online.pl/gra-ocena.asp?ID=17477 and http://www.gamershell.com/pc/flying_tigers_shadows_over_china/downloads.html tend to clutter the search results too

czar 19:20, 1 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • Also I think we can add mcvpacific.com alongside mcvuk czar 20:23, 1 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Thanks, Czar. I'll attend to this soonish and I'll make a note here when it's done. Please remind me if it's not done within 7 days. Regarding gry-online.pl, by the way, pl.wiki (whose vetting we relied on in determining reliability) have a note for this source related to the authorship of the articles. I'll reach out to some of the Polish editors here for a quick translation. -Thibbs (talk) 21:17, 1 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Sounds good. I'd also remove GamersHell too per its discussion czar 16:45, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Also any idea why http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/cruise-ship-tycoon-review/1900-6129670/ would not show up in the search? czar 16:49, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
    • Thanks for the suggestion on GamerHell as well, Czar. That GameSpot article shows up for me on the Situational Sources CSE which (if I remember correctly) is where I put it due to the mismatch between WP:VG/RS's indication that it is an RS here in the "General gaming" table but that it is a Situational RS here in the Checklist. This should be cleared up. If it's an RS then I'll shift it to the main CSE. -Thibbs (talk) 21:09, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
      • Oy, that's a lot of GameSpot discussions. I'm not sure why it's marked as situational in the checklist—the user-created content? In any event, I think it's worth moving to the main RS search and filtering out the user content as we do with the other sites czar 21:39, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
        • Sounds good to me, but I am slavishly guided by WP:VG/RS in making these determinations so we'd have to update it there first. I liked your idea from a few weeks ago to merge the SRSes and RSes by the way. I think the SRSes were often compromises from quite a while ago and I would guess that many of them might be merged into the RSes or non-RSes with little problem if they were brought up in talk. -Thibbs (talk) 21:59, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Updated in the checklist. I think we'll need individual revisits of the situational sources, but that's towards the bottom of my list. At the top, I'll have the interview finished later today, hopefully with a little spare time for revisions czar 10:32, 4 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • [2] Not sure how best to remove these... perhaps on &GroupKeys=blogs/members/? czar 10:57, 15 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
    • OK I think I got that one fixed. I actually addressed several of the above issues last weekend. I meant to ping you but forgot... I still haven't fixed the first three bulletpoints at the top, but I'll get on that this weekend as time permits. -Thibbs (talk) 14:56, 15 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I just fixed bullet point #1, but I'm not 100% satisfied with it yet. The Gamasutra press releases are now nicely absent from the RS search and present in the SRS search, but the mcvuk press releases seems to be mostly absent from both CSEs. Sometimes there is a little lag in the system so hopefully this just resolves itself... I'll get to the last two points (gamerevolution and metacritic) later today if I can. -Thibbs (talk) 15:36, 15 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
OK all done... I think. Let me know if problems persist. -Thibbs (talk) 20:23, 15 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Thanks—got another: https://www.gameinformer.com/members/ and http://www.jeuxvideo.com/forums/ czar 20:59, 16 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
    • checkY Done. -Thibbs (talk) 03:02, 17 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
      • It also looks like one of the tabs in game's pages leads to stuff under http://www.jeuxvideo.com/wikis-soluce-astuces/, which is editable user-created content. And they put some default text there that triggers search hits even when the actual page is empty, like [3]. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 18:08, 17 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
        • checkY Done. And thanks for the suggestion, Hellknowz. As I've told Czar previously, I am very grateful for these sorts of suggestions on the CSE. Please let e know if you see anything else. -Thibbs (talk) 20:05, 17 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

What's our opinion on tag listings on websites, that is, a list of article blurbs tagged with some relevant term. In my particular search example, I searched for "Aardwolf mud" at [4] and the first page is entirely engadget's tag lists pointing to the same article as the first hit. While a tag page does provide an overview, all the hits are still in the main results sorted by Google's relevance criteria. The issue here is that a lot of tag lists end up as irrelevant hits and tend to clutter the already-short results page. If "Starcraft" appears under "Blizzard", "RPG", "Zerg", "Chris Metzen", "Templar", etc., then all those tag pages get returned even if most of the articles listed are not relevant or even the same ones. I don't think any real hits will be lost if we exclude tag pages and let google show the direct pages. The only way a page would be excluded is if it's tagged under something that the article does not mention (but then how is it relevant to RS search anyway). I'm wondering what yours and Czar's opinion on this is as you've dealt with exclusions? —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 18:55, 20 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • Well that makes sense to me. I'll exclude it tomorrow if Czar doesn't object. -Thibbs (talk) 02:15, 21 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'm of mixed minds. I like the tag pages when they collect more than one article—makes it really easy to see the range of what each publication is covering. There is also something to say for an outlet choosing to make a tag (planning to cover future articles in that topic). It does add some clutter, though, and I imagine it's worse with the broader topics. I slightly lean towards keeping them but I don't feel strongly about it. Another idea could be to have a CSE for just the tags, when needed. czar 07:56, 21 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
OK I'll hold off for now then. I don't know how much use a tags-only CSE would get, but we could might ask the broader community for input. If there's interest then I could get that set up. -Thibbs (talk) 11:29, 21 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

I wanted to look at which sites have exclusions, so I organized them in a table: User:Hellknowz/Sandbox3. While doing so, 3 exclusions seem to not belong to anything that I can identify: http://free4web.pl/3/*, http://forum.idg.pl/, http://forums.sports-gaming.com/. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 12:51, 21 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • http://killscreendaily.com/ is now (redirecting to) https://killscreen.com/. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 14:00, 21 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
    • checkY Done. I have removed the three unmatched exclusions (I have no memory of why they were there to begin with), and I changed killscreendaily.com to killscreen.com. Thanks, Hellknowz! -Thibbs (talk) 03:12, 22 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

I suggest a better forum for this would be WT:POLAND. But it says roughly: NOTICE: Editors are not anoymous, but sigh with full name only in paid materials, therefore their identity has to be confirmed through manual search. In rating the service (website), you should take into consideration only the rating in the reviews, not combined." EBSCO resources edit

Dear Thibbs, some months ago I applied for an EBSCO account through TWL; since I got my account unfortunately I haven't managed to exploit it: before applying I had read that several journals on Classical studies (my main interest on Wikipedia) were included in the EBSCO subscription, but then I found out that they are just indexed and no full text is provided (other resources have full text of course, but so far I found none interesting to me). I hope I will be able to make a better use of my EBSCO account in the next months, but I just wanted to let you know that I can give up on my account in case there is shortage of EBSCO accounts for other applicants. Best regards, ContinuaEvoluzione 09:45, 23 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

WP:VG/RS search engine edit

Hi Thibbs,

I learned that you're the one who made the custom Google search engine. Thank you very much for making it, it has made editing and a quick look up for notability so much easier. I've never been the constructive type of editor (mostly involved with deletion lately it seems), but I managed to turn the article on Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan from this into this. I couldn't have done it without the search engine, so you've made this possible. Thanks! soetermans. ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A TALK 21:59, 22 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Soetermans! I'm glad it is proving useful! To give credit where it's due, the origins of the idea trace to Odie5533 and Gwern, and although I maintain it at present, it wouldn't be half as slick without the help of editors like Czar (and recently also Hellknowz) bug reporting and feeding me suggestions for improvement. There's a mini history if it here. Please let me know if you see anything that needs tweaking. -Thibbs (talk) 00:36, 23 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Speaking of, here's some exclusions we can filter out that pop up in search:

By the way, do these need http://www. prefix? What if the sites are https or don't always use www?

I'm also still not convinced we need tag pages. The issue is I get to page 10 and so many entries were eaten by redundant tags instead of hopefully getting more results from different sites. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 14:30, 23 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Hellknowz! I just updated the CSEs. The "http://www." prefix is not necessary, but I'll think more about the tags situation in the next few days. Ultimately it might be best to hold a discussion on the topic at the talk page of WP:VG/RS. Thanks again for the help! -Thibbs (talk) 02:57, 24 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
I just opened up the topic to the community in talk at WP:VG/RS. Czar and Hellknowz: feel free to invite anyone else to the discussion and to cross post to WT:VG. -Thibbs (talk) 20:21, 26 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

I noticed that Pocket Gamer (http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk) is not on the list. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 14:08, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Weird... It's listed at WP:VG/RS as defunct yet I see posts from March 1, 2016. I see that the print version is listed as reliable, but is that the official website for the print publication? -Thibbs (talk) 02:56, 2 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

ANI edit

This was a WP:DICK comment to make, and you know it. I know you're one of those high and mighty preachy types that likes to lord around ANI condescending to people, but try to draw a line somewhere. Start by not posting WP:DICK comments like that, ok? Have a nice day. - theWOLFchild 22:16, 4 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

It's hard for me to watch idly while you badger people who are expressing valid views in public spaces, Thewolfchild. And I don't think it's particularly dastardly of me to point out hypocrisy when I see it even in instances where it diminishes the thrust of your badgering. I learned about the case a few days ago while reading up on a different topic at one of the Wikipedia criticism websites, and I've been watching that case unfold quietly from the sidelines up until now so I'm not exactly sure how I've given you the impression that I'm a "preachy type[] that likes to lord around ANI", but OK sure. Feel free to make personal attacks if you like. My skin is thick enough and all comments are welcome here. I'm amused at the thought of you lecturing me about WP:DICK. Do I dare to hope that you've read it yourself? Either way it's a good social principle well worth the time spent reading it. Not quite a pact, but a good principle nevertheless. I promise you that I'll continue to keep it in mind. Thanks for stopping by. -Thibbs (talk) 00:53, 5 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Just noticed your self-imposed drama-related wiki-break. That was one of the most sensible things you've done in the last several weeks. I hope you're taking the time to re-evaluate your peer-level rhetoric here. There are places where anti-collaborative behavior can be a useful tool, but generally it's a poor idea. I'd be happy to support a future bid of yours to get your anti-vandal tools back. Let me know if you're interested. -Thibbs (talk) 10:55, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Source needed: Can you help? edit

I'm going to do some work on Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner. Since you've got access to Vol 4, Issue 3 of GameFan from 1998, which has an exclusive on the title, I would dearly like the information from it. I'm not really able to take responsibility for your physical copy (I'm somewhat ignorant of how this kind of source information request works), so if you could provide the information in some other way, like a transcript with page numbers, I would be really grateful. --ProtoDrake (talk) 20:09, 8 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

DRN help needed and volunteer roll call edit

You are receiving this message because you have listed yourself on the list of volunteers at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Volunteering#List of the DRN volunteers.

First, assistance is needed at DRN. We have recently closed a number of cases without any services being provided for lack of a volunteer willing to take the case. There are at least three cases awaiting a volunteer at this moment. Please consider taking one.

Second, this is a volunteer roll call. If you remain interested in helping at DRN and are willing to actively do so by taking at least one case (and seeing it through) or helping with administrative matters at least once per calendar month, please add your name to this roll call list. Individuals currently on the principal volunteer list who do not add their name on the roll call list will be removed from the principal volunteer list after June 30, 2016 unless the DRN Coordinator chooses to retain their name for the best interest of DRN or the encyclopedia. Individuals whose names are removed after June 30, 2016, should feel free to re-add their names to the principal volunteer list, but are respectfully requested not to do so unless they are willing to take part at DRN at least one time per month as noted above. No one is going to be monitoring to see if you live up to that commitment, but we respectfully ask that you either live up to it or remove your name from the principal volunteer list.

Best regards, TransporterMan (talk · contribs) (Current DRN coordinator) (Not watching this page) Sent via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 17:05, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • Dang, I really just don't have the time at present... My IRL and off-wiki workload has become considerably higher in recent months, and I'm hardly even creating mainspace content now. I'll re-add myself if I feel like I'm free enough to build the encyclopedia and assist in other ways. Until then I've removed myself from the rolls. Sorry. -Thibbs (talk) 10:55, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Scan needed edit

Hi Thibbs, I was looking at the Famitsu archive and was wondering if you have any issues that contains anything on Nights into Dreams...? Although its FAC has some supports, it will fail unless I can locate any Japanese coverage. So far I've got absolutely nothing, and I'm becoming increasingly desperate as I can't find any Japanese reviews for a Japanese game. If I can even have one or two Japanese reviews, I'll make the most out of them. I'm certain Famitsu has it covered, but the trouble is that I don't know which month or issue they would have covered it in. The game was released in July 1996, so it would be anything around that time. Thank you! JAGUAR  12:00, 26 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • @Jaguar: I can take a look through my copies of Famitsu, but the ones I have listed at the Reference Library page are pretty much it, so I think the latest I have may be October 1995. Maybe there might be some development info or teasers? I'll see. And it may take me a few days to look through since I won't have a lot of time before Friday. But I can give you a little good news perhaps. I've tracked down a few sources at Famitsu.com (Famitsu's online presence): 1, 2, and perhaps more via this search. These articles look good to me at first blush, but they will need to be translated. I've done some translation in the past, but I don't have a lot of time at present. Would you be able to track down a translator? If not I can try to take a look at translating it this weekend too (no promises though, since I'm slower now than I was and I'm worried I'm getting rusty from lack of practice). -Thibbs (talk) 04:12, 27 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Thank you! I think I've seen both of them before, the first one is an overview of the 2012 HD re-release (I used Google translate on the pages, but I can't make much sense with it) and I think the second one is an overview on the PS2 re-release. I was hoping to find some Saturn reviews or retrospectives, the only hope I found was a magazine called Hyper Saturn, but only the front cover is available. I have an app that can translate scans (it worked smoothly on German), so I'll give it a shot. Just any Japanese reviews on the game would hopefully bring some success to the FAC, and I can understand why there's an oppose for no Japanese coverage. Thanks again for your help. JAGUAR  11:14, 27 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • @Jaguar: That Hyper Saturn source looks good. Famitsu had its own spin-off as well called Sega Saturn Tsushin (セガサターン通信) which surely would have covered the game, but I don't collect that magazine and I only happen to have one issue on hand. Sadly it's from 12/2/94 which is just too early to be covering Nights into Dreams. I looked through the issue anyway just in case but I found nothing... In more positive news, I did consult a very reliable fan-made index of Famitsu articles that I found online eons ago and according to that source there are articles on Nights in the following issues:
    Famitsu's 4/19 issue (Pgs. 10 & 18)
    Famitsu's 4/26 issue (Pg. 96)
    and Famitsu's 5/10-17 issue (Pg. 80).
I know it's not much help since I don't have any of those issues, but at least you have specific targets now... I'll keep looking a bit more tomorrow but I doubt I'll find much more. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. It's a great game and deserves a FA. -Thibbs (talk) 02:17, 28 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Thank you. It's a shame that I can't find any actual scans (I've looked everywhere I can think of online) but at least I know the specific targets. I couldn't find anything else on Hyper Saturn, other than the front cover. I'm actually beginning to think that Japan has their own internet! The very least I could find was a scan for the PS2 re-release, but I doubt that would constitute in decent native coverage. JAGUAR  22:06, 28 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

WarpZone edit

Hi Thibbs, I am the owner of WarpZone magazine here in Brazil and I did the edition in Magazine List. Please, I did something wrong? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cmarquesbr (talkcontribs) 09:52, 20 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Cmarquesbr: - The list you have been editing is a list of prominent or otherwise notable magazines. There are simply too many video game magazines in the world for us to provide a complete/exhaustive list of every magazine so recently the community has decided to limit the list to notable magazines. In order to show that a magazine is "notable" we would have to establish that it would be possible to write a stand-alone article on it. In other words we would need a bare minimum of two reliable third-party articles substantially covering the topic of the magazine in question. Please understand that just because a magazine isn't considered "notable" doesn't mean that it's a bad magazine or anything like that, but there are minimum rules for membership on the list. If you have any questions then feel free to ask me for more detail here. -Thibbs (talk) 11:08, 20 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

PS-themed book needed edit

Hi Thibbs, I'd like to beef up an article about an early Playstation game franchise, and it seems that the recent duology of Pix'n Love books La revolution Playstation has some essential info tidbits that could allow for an in-depth coverage of the subject. My question is, then, whether you have direct or indirect access to these books or to the earlier work by the same author titled Revolutionaries at Sony, which they are apparently based on. Please drop a message at my talk page when you have the time. Your help, of course, would be much appreciated. Electroguv (talk) 08:09, 22 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Russian computer mags edit

Jason Scott is uploading thousands of old Russian computer mags [26]—thought you might be interested. Not sure if any gaming mags are included czar 10:01, 24 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks for the suggestion. Having taken a quick look I can already see that there are a number of journals that cover games, although I haven't found an game-specific ones yet. I would hope that whatever game-specific journals there are will eventually be categorized into the Game and Gamer Magazines collection, but I must say that from my experience (having uploaded material many months ago) they are a little resistant to non-hierarchical categorization requests. E.g. If you upload a new collection as "Czar's Collection" and then requested that it be placed under "Wikipedian Collections" then they would be ok with it, but if you requested that all Nintendo-related content from "Czar's Collection" be bundled together with all Nintendo-related content from "Thibbs' Collection" to form a new "Wikipedian Nintendo-related Content" collection which itself would be categorized under "Wikipedian Collections" then they aren't great about allowing it. So we'll see. Anyway thanks again for the heads-up on this interesting material. -Thibbs (talk) 11:55, 24 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

EBSCO login edit

Hi Thibbs, Thank you for the support in connection with logging into my account.

I just wanted to know if there is any way I could simplify the password because the current one is a bit difficult for me to remember (any "change password" option, if it is available} Thanks a lot for your support once again. --Muzammil (talk) 07:03, 11 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Hindustanilanguage:, I am still looking into this suggestion. The basic answer is that yes, I can change your password for you (e.g. if your account has been compromised), but we have to balance your interest in a new password with considerations of password strength. So any new password you are given will likely have the same degree of entropy and will be equally difficult to remember. I will contact you by email when I find out more about how simple (memorable) a password I am allowed to issue, but in the meanwhile does the password I've sent you in fact work? @AnthroMimus: My best guess is that you are probably accidentally copying the period at the end of the link from the email I sent. The best way to reach the survey is to click the hyperlink in the email, but failing this you can simply remove the period from the end of the url when you enter that into the address bar. Thank you so much for participating in the survey, by the way. We really appreciate the feedback. Please let me know if my suggestions (about how to reach the survey) work for you. -Thibbs (talk) 03:20, 4 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes it did, thank you very much, Thibbs. (I think however your hyperlink actually included the period. By pasting without it, it worked.) I filled it out and sent it. I had a much longer response to "explain best uses for resource" but it exceeded the max character limit. So I truncated it. Cheers. AnthroMimus (talk) 03:49, 4 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Famitsu question edit

Hi Thibbs, I'm doing some rewriting of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and I noticed you added the cite for the Famitsu review back in 2012.[28] But it looks off, as it references issue 915 and says it came out June 30, 2006. The game came out in December 13, 2002 in Japan, and several English sources confirm that Famitsu's review appeared that week.[29][30] Could you double check the citation? It's not a big deal, as the Nintendo World Report citation already verifies the info and provides a convenient translation, but it would be nice to have the original Famitsu cite. Thanks,--Cúchullain t/c 17:21, 6 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • @Cuchullain: - That issue was a special retrospective issue containing a digest of 698 previous cross reviews from 1999 to 2002. I have it listed here, so I could find you a scan of the review if you'd like. But it's not the original Famitsu review (which would likely be in one of the 2002 issues). Let me know if you'd like a copy of the one from issue 915. -Thibbs (talk) 01:02, 7 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Oh, great, thanks for the clarification. I don't think there should be any problem with the cite then, I was just concerned it was an error. And yes, I'd certainly appreciate a copy if you have one - I don't read Japanese but have a friend who does. I'll send you an email.--Cúchullain t/c 14:31, 7 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Cuchullain: - I'll easily be able to get it to you over the weekend, but let me know if it's needed in a rush and I can get it to you tomorrow night. I also have a review of the game in Games magazine (where it won a Game of the Year award). I'm guessing you have enough sources that you might not need the Games review, but I can get you a copy if you think it would help. -Thibbs (talk) 03:28, 8 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
No rush, this weekend will be perfect. And sure, I'll take the Games review and see if we can work it in. If you happen to have the Nintendo Power review, or know where to get it (April 2003, issue 167, p. 132), that's probably the biggest thing the article's missing. Thanks again,--Cúchullain t/c 14:11, 8 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
OK I'll get copies of both the Famitsu and Games reviews this weekend. I don't have access to the Nintendo Power review, sadly. -Thibbs (talk) 00:42, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure the reason, really, but anyway I think the pageviews give a more accurate idea of interest level in the readers and the interview you and Deltasim gave us for this issue has seen a decent initial spike as far as interviews are concerned. I personally find the work the two of you have accomplished to be be very interesting because the "edutainment" branch of the evolution of video games is such an under-reported topic. On Wikipedia (and at WP:VG) the topic falls outside the mainstream and what can I say... I'm interested in offbeat topics. Who can account for taste? But if it's outside of the mainstream then I would presume that for many editors reading the interview it was more of an introduction to a topic they were unfamiliar with than one on which they may have felt qualified to expound. Anyway thanks for making the effort and really answering the questions in depth. I wish I had more free time to help you and Deltasim expand these kinds of articles. -Thibbs (talk) 03:37, 12 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Thibbs for your thoughtful reply. It's strange to hear you refer to edutainment as "offbeat" and "outside of the mainstream". I suppose a part of me is still stuck in the 90's when the genre was ubiquitious amongst everyone my age. But as I said in the interview, all games have educational aspects. And the varous education/VG-themed articles on Wikipedia prove that there is some interest in the educational side among WP:VG editors (otherwise those articles wouldn't exist), so I do hope that the interview sheds a small light on a small corner of Wikipedia that has drawn my attention, and perhaps it will inspire someone to join our crew.
We mentioned the possibility of an Edutainment task force. What are your thoughts on this? i'll make a post on the WP:VG page too to get other opinions.--Coin945 (talk) 02:50, 13 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
I know what you mean about the ubiquity of the genre making "offbeat" seem like a strange word choice, but I meant that it's a genre that a lot of people "outgrow" and that the average editor today may still fall into that window of age between when edutainment titles are of personal interest and when those titles are re-discovered for the editor's children. So edutainment is not a genre that most Wikipedia editors have an active knowledge of. I see you've posted your suggestion for a taskforce to WT:VG so I'll respond to that idea there. I think it's a decent idea, but it could be modified to be more effective. -Thibbs (talk) 18:30, 14 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
