Questions about Prank Headers

I've received some complaints about the prank header that I've posted on my userpage. Do you think that it should be removed?  ~Steptrip 16:47, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please point me to the discussion. Though after a quick look, my initial impression is that the bouncing wikipedia puzzleglobe interferes with the toolbox menu, and is disruptive to Wikipedia's user interface in that respect. The Transhumanist 19:12, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry that I didn't respond sooner, but I resolved that I should ask an admin to delete that header and the page to which it links, and sure enough, they were deleted. I will also soon replace the bouncing wikiball with my user logo on the right hand side of my Master Userpage(my user logo is the image on my userpage).  ~Steptrip 22:29, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

The lesson looks excellent. How do I get cracking? --Dweller 23:08, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Some years ago, the British secret service took out ads looking to recruit spies. There were no contact details, on the basis that if you couldn't work out what to do, you weren't right for it. Is this a bit like that? --Dweller 11:06, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Nope. I always hated weeder classes. They weren't designed to teach, only to test. Tests are fine by me, after the teacher has done his job. I believe that a student's performance on a test is as much a reflection of the teacher's effectiveness at teaching as it is an indication of the student's grasp of the subject being tested.
A good starting point would be to place {{VC assignments}} at the top of your talk page where you can easily access it. The current lesson needs proofreading. You might also know some helpful links that I missed. The list lesson also needs proofreading, and completion. Any help you could provide on either lesson would be most appreciated. In the next few days, I'll create a coaching section for you on the VC. Keep an eye out for it. The Transhumanist 11:17, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Okay I'm back, not that I ever actually left. Though it's time to get on with our projects. You mentioned you would like to help with the preparation of the next VC lesson. Please do. I'd like to have it ready by Monday. It's posted at User:The Transhumanist/Virtual classroom/The purposes and functions of lists on Wikipedia. I'll be checking in on it and contributing daily. Enjoy. The Transhumanist 19:03, 7 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
This might seem strange, but I don't recall volunteering to help out to prepare the VC lesson :) can you shed some light? In a further note, apologies I've not got down to the help me articles - I've sort of got a bit of writer's block; I'm sure you understand. anthonycfc [talk] 17:27, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, I can't find it. I know someone volunteered.   Hopefully, they'll come forward again. In the meantime, I've got this lesson on lists that needs to be completed soon, and was wondering if you'd like to proofread it. If the lesson sparks any questions, be sure to ask. By the way, what to you think of the new "Learning the ropes" lesson? User:The Transhumanist/Virtual classroom/The purposes and functions of lists on Wikipedia. Cool. I'm glad I could help. Based on your feedback, I've updated my tools page to include keyboard shortcuts, so they're easier to find now. The Transhumanist 15:16, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I can try, but while spelling corrections are my forté, the actual use of words tends to throw me... :-). BTW: I poked a comment into your page Wikipedia:Learning the ropes as I didn't want to actually edit the page. Look at the history to find it. Sometimes WikiGnomes get shy. Teacher-Student Advice

Good evening (GMT time); I was wondering if there is a policy and guideline resource you actively refer to when XfDing, or if you reccommend any sure-fast resources that can be used to justify your opinion at a XfD?

Kind regards,
anthonycfc [talk] 00:21, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Deletion-related motives are closely associated with one's Wikiphilosophy. I'm an incrementalist, for instance. So many of my arguments come from that philosophy.
The rest of the arguments pertain to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Those two links have brief summaries of each one (and serve as memory boosters). For a firm grounding in the reasons for deletion, you should be familiar with all the policies and guidelines in the deletion and content sections of those two pages.
I hope that helps. The Transhumanist 06:10, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot TT; it's not a question of my not knowing policy/guidelines (I actually pride myself on a thorough knowledge of them..I've got a photographic memory :) but more of a question (as you wisely worded it) memory boosting.

=== To speed things up, and help with the backlog at the same time ===

And if you want to move ahead more quickly, my strongest advice is for you to become an Admin Coach. There isn't any rule against being a coachee and a coach at the same time. You can set up subsections for your students in the Coaching section of the VC, if you like. One thing I do for all my students is analyze their contributions - using Interiot's edit counter, and by poring through the contribs list manually, using popups to take a look at the diffs (it's recursive, so you can look at popups inside popups). I go in deeper (view the whole page) if I spot something unusual or interesting, exceptionally good/bad, etc. Then I point out areas they should work on.

You should also list yourself at Wikipedia:editor review if you haven't done so already.

I see you use popups. There are some other scripts you might want to add to your account. See the instructions at the top of my tools page for an ultra fast way to turbocharge your user account.

What method do you use for searching and replacing?

The Transhumanist 11:38, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I apologise for waiting so long to reply to this. Real Life has been interfering in my ability to edit here.

  1. Admin coach - Interesting idea. I'll settle down into being a "coachee" first, if you don't mind.
  2. I've been at editor review for a while. I've had lots of nice compliments but only really one solid usable bit of feedback (wikilink more specifically to sections within articles)
  3. I'm reluctant to fiddle with my monobooks and don't currently have Firefox - see my impending answers at the virtual classroom for more.
  4. I'm unsure what you mean by "searching and replacing". I think you're referring to running a tool like AWB and looking for mispellings etc. I don't do anything like that. All of my edits are "by hand". ;-). I'm concerned that I may have misunderstood this question, so if I have, please let me know. --Dweller 09:53, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Coaching invitation

I must confess you caught me at a time when I was pondering drafting my RFA statements. It has now been 10 days since I nominated Campbell's Soup Cans for WP:FAC and nominated List of recordings preserved in the United States National Recording Registry for WP:FLC. I am quite hopeful for both. 2 different types of WP:FC would bolster a candidacy already including successful resuscitation of WP:CHICOTW. Your name is still listed at Requests for an admin coach. If you are no longer looking for a coach, or you currently have one, please remove yourself from that list. Thank you. The Transhumanist 23:45, 12 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dear Transhumanist,
I think there's been a mistake. I've been an administrator since July of last year. I've been coaching since September. My name was remove from the list of requests in August. The only mention of me on that list is where someone mentions that I've been inquiring as to candidates' coaching status. I should never have received your message. wikEd

Thanks again for listing wikEd. I have a few additions / comments:

  • Annoying bugs: it does not really matter for the wikEd users, but the bugs mentioned by you are not wikEd bugs but instead Firefox / Mozilla bugs. Some of them have been fixed for the upcoming releases, several have not. It is sometimes very frustrating, especially when I cannot code a workaround (actually, there are numerous workarounds for Mozilla bugs in the wikEd code).
  • Innappropriate up and down arrown jumps: have you tried an 'update syntax highlighting' (with nothing selected) click? Please could you drop me a note if that helps, thanks.
  • Cutting and pasting page titles: a simple [T]extify click removes the title formatting. Since several revisions this does no longer leave empty lines before and after.

Cacycle 02:51, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm glad to be of help. I swear by wikEd for searching and replacing in the edit window. It's the best tool I've found for that by far. I'll try your suggested workarounds above, and will see about changing the wording of the bug report. By the way, is there a way to turn off all the colorful highlighting? Sometimes I find it very useful, but sometimes it boggles my eyes and blows my mind. The Transhumanist 03:37, 13 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
One of the buttons on the right side turns highlighting off. Make sure to update to the latest revision (Shift-Reload) and check the cool new 'jump to heading' feature from the 'find' drop-down. Cacycle 03:42, 13 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re. Concerning your Admin Coaching assignments

Hello. I am currently coaching a user (here), and I'm available to coach more upon request. The requests list badly needs an update, as I see many names there that I saw half a year ago when I joined the program. Perhaps the older requests should be confirmed and removed if the users are no longer active or interested in being coached (or have become administrators already, of course). Well, based on your searches (which I also tried on the Wikipedia and Template namespaces), there doesn't appear to be a project for such messages. Though it's an interesting user page feature. That's "motto of the day". I'm sure I saw "message of the day" somewhere. The Transhumanist 22:15, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

In case you don't get back to it, see replies at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#User page issue. --Quiddity 00:57, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're right, if everyone used that gag, it would be quite annoying. I've removed it. The Transhumanist 01:01, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you

  • Oh, and I didn't know you were partly responsible for {{W-graphical}}. I switched over to it last week. Thanks for that, too :) - Alison 05:25, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Good evening; I'm glad to be back. You've got a bit of mail, by the way! anthonycfc [talk] 23:36, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've replied. I was rather confused by your reply, so an answer would be much appreciated! Regards, anthonycfc [talk] 04:39, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Admin Coaching

so...when does it start? Deep Impact 22:26, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

When does what start? I was just posting a notice to you about the Admin Coaching department (I posted the notice to everyone there). If you are still looking for a coach, you should go to the Admin coaching page and follow the instructions there. Good luck. The Transhumanist 19:45, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

My Progress

How do you think I am doing. I've taken your suggestions and have tried to apply them as best as I can. Also regarding my mainspace/userspace edit count: I've refrained from editing my userpage and left that for my bot account(NolBot). My ER questions

Hey! just back from a trip, the question is answered now. Thank you! Wooyi 02:04, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

User boxes?

I'm not precisely new other than (almost) extremely inexperienced. (to show how, My browser has found 4 incorrectly spelled words in here before correction) How do you use the user boxes, where is the list of them, and (just for curiosity) how did you do that thing with your user page and talk page? Thanks for your help! Sir Intellegent 23:57, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

How did I do what thing? The Transhumanist 00:02, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

The nifty window looking like thingy on your pages. And those user boxes.... Sir Intellegent 00:07, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

See Wikipedia:WikiProject Userboxes. Also see the User page design center
The Transhumanist 00:27, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm not The Transhumanist, but maybe WP:UBX can help with the userboxes. As for userpages, apparently The Transhumanist used the code on User:The Transhumanist/Header1 (which is transcluded onto his userpage) to create that "nifty window". If you want something similar, use the <div style="..."> </div> tags like you would in HTML. Does this help? +A.0u 00:14, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
For additional assistance/advice on userpage design, you may want to check out Wikipedia:WikiProject User Page Help. Cheers! +A.0u 00:18, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

The border and background of my user pages are done using a transclusion trick. Its wikicode is with my header, which is kept on a subpage and is included on each of my pages through transclusion. The Transhumanist 00:27, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Where are the user-boxes for the rest of my stuff on my page? Do you know where? Sir Intellegent 02:26, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Spam links

Hope you like my proofread. I'm not certain the "important note" I added belongs where it currently is. I dithered with the idea of shifting it lower, but thought that users should have this difference emblazoned on their minds from the first moment they spot a spamlink. Thoughts? --Dweller 12:15, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'll have a look. Thank you. The Transhumanist 19:09, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

User:The Transhumanist/User page design/monobook.js

You might want to rename this page; User subpages ending .js are treated specially by the software, and it's driving the formatting of that page crazy. --ais523 13:20, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you very much. Feel free to fix problems immediately, if you like. No need to wait for me. And I appreciate you keeping me informed. Long live Wikipedia! The Transhumanist 19:06, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I can't fix such a problem myself, because .js pages in the User namespace are automatically protected except for the user in whose namespace they are (because if you could edit User:ais523/monobook.js, for instance, you could cause me to run any code you liked). --ais523 17:19, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Forgot about that.  :) Yes, moving it was better than bypassing it with a link to a new page. Thanks for the heads up. The Transhumanist 17:22, 20 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Proofreaders/copy-editors needed for link spam lesson

The new lesson on link spam for the Virtual classroom goes live on Wednesday. We need help getting it ready by editors who are good at grammar, description, or instruction. If you see this message, please help. The lesson needs to be easy for beginners to understand. Even if you only have time to edit a single paragraph, that would sure help. Thank you. The Transhumanist 20:44, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I fixed minor grammatical errors. Looks okay with me. Real96 01:35, 20 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Barnstar

Hey, thanks for the gift! Very much appreciated. I've toned down the vandalism a touch recently, just going for my fourth featured article in 2007 so much of my time is spent researching and tinkering with articles. But when I get bored, I'll go back to vandal whacking for half an hour to revive my spirits! Thanks again, and keep up the good work in the VC. The Rambling Man 07:56, 20 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I knew about the FA's (a little bird told me). You and Dweller make a great team. The Transhumanist 20:14, 20 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi coach

Hi coach. I'm busy working on two new FA bids, but not so busy that I have forgotten about the coaching. I had one excellent question at the VC, and would welcome more. I've signed up for AMA but haven't yet taken a case... plan to do that. Other than that, I've taken your advice about reading policies and keeping up with stuff at the various boards you suggested (you might have seen me occasionally contributing). Other than the AMA, what's next? (PS I'm waiting for Vandal Proof, which I'll be able to install on the machine I'm running Firefox from) --Dweller 10:06, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'll have something posted to your section on the VC in a few minutes. The Transhumanist 10:41, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Apologies

Good evening (GMT time); apologies for the absence, TT - internet problems :) hope to read up on the new VC lesson soon! Again, apologies, and see you around! Kind regards — anthony[cfc] 22:43, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Questions

I'd quite like it if you and some of your coachees, quizzed me more. LuckyLuke's question grilled me on application of policy, which was great (how did I do, btw?). I'd like more like that. I'd also appreciate some critical diff-based querying of my editing and user-interaction. What say you? --Dweller 10:23, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I responded to your round 2 answers, and to your extension requests. Did you spot those? I've been waiting for replies on those. The Transhumanist 17:15, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

name changes

thanks! I've been thinking about it for a while; decided it would be nice to have a simple, easy (and real) name. -- phoebe(brassratgirl)/talk) 18:56, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

You've got a cool name. I really like it. The Transhumanist 19:23, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wow

OK. I'm honoured. I'll do my very best. Have a terrific break. And when you come back, would you co-nom User:The Rambling Man for admin with me? --Dweller 19:20, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Absolutely. The Transhumanist 19:22, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
P.S. If you could set up my comments about FA as a lesson, I'll get folks working on it. In fact, contributing to FAC debates or even (as I started) at FARC (!) is quite a good task for the coachees. --Dweller 19:27, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
