Nash comment edit

(moved from user page)

ok firstly, i have been here far longer than you and know how this works. all the bottom guys are bench players and play very few minutes. if he had an actual position then fine, but we dont know it and also he may be 45th for all you know and that may be the lowest of any point guards that start for their teams in the NBA. whether he is at the top or bottom is really irrelevant. discuss it, see what people say. hope that helps. RE: Your Tracy McGrady edit edit

Where did you obtain this information from? In the absence of any supporting evidence, I've made the decision to get rid of it. --Downwards 05:24, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please make more of an effort to be correct in your deletions. You've frequently deleted valid content. Now it's conspicuously the single sourced item on McGrady's page. [1] The Animal 15:43, 14 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

What do you mean when you say "make more of an effort to be correct in my deletions"? Prior to you adding the citation (now done - thank you), in what way made your edit valid?

Have you even read rule number three of Wikipedia's verifiability policy?

Thusly,

3. The obligation to provide a reputable source lies with the editors wishing to include the material, not on those seeking to remove it.

--Downwards 04:15, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

So, I should go and delete everything on wikipedia without a source even if it's easily verifiable? Like the rest of the Tracy McGrady page or any number of other pages? Maybe I should call it vandalism to boot?

The Animal 04:35, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Three things:
  • Wikipedia:Don't disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point - a (Wikipedia guideline) - large, wholescale deletions are the wrong way to make a point
  • Besides, from what I can tell from the history, I don't think Downwards has ever actually contributed any new content to this article. He has done a fair amount to polish (spelling, fixing links, grammar, etc.) other users' work that he sees as legitimate.
  • Wikipedia:Template messages/Sources of articles - lots of useful templates, especially the very first one, {{fact}}. You stick that after any facts you believe need referencing; it produces a small font, superscripted [citation needed]. Example [citation needed].
    • Readers can see that the preceding point may or may not be supported
    • It retains potentially useful content (don't bother with this tag if the material is obviously bogus)
--A. B. 13:44, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Of course, I wasn't really going to delete the McGrady page or anything else. I was just making a reductio ad absurdum argument with respect to Downwards saying that it's a good practice to delete true, easily verifiable content if it's not sourced.

Etiquette, re: this edit

See Wikipedia:Etiquette for further enlightenment. Thanks, and refrain from doing it again. --Downwards 08:45, 10 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
