Hey there! Thanks for the edits to Pegasus Bridge, very kind of you. Are you interested in airborne warfare-related matters specifically, or just military history in general? Skinny87 (talk) 17:17, 23 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi. :) Thank you very much for picking up the problems with Kingston Business School and Kingston Law School, as noted at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2009 June 6. Since you mentioned wanting some advice/help, I thought I would drop by to see what I could offer.

The only thing I immediately see is that you first tagged the article {{close paraphrase}}. I realize you may not have noticed how closely paraphrased (e.g. "verbatim" :D) the material was when you first encountered it, but if you do, please feel free to boldly apply the {{copyvio}} template immediately. Wikipedia's articles are widely mirrored, practically instantly, and that template serves to prevent our inadvertent contributory infringement by blocking the text from publication so that this doesn't happen. Sometimes, contributors will be able to verify that the material is permitted, but the template is written with that possibility in mind, as is the notice. Most copyright holders will understand that the process is in place to protect them as well as Wikipedia, and though some I have encountered have been a bit irritated at having to go through the red tape, many have expressed appreciation (even some of the irritated ones :)).

If the article is recent, if the copyvio is blatant, if there is no credible sign that there might be permission to use it, and if there isn't enough material left over to salvage if the copyvio were to disappear, {{db-g12}} (which marks it for speedy deletion) is recommended. I myself sometimes use {{copyvio}} in preference to {{db-g12}} if I believe that the contributor might be able to verify permission, even if he hasn't said he can. If the contributor User:MadeUp Library Name pastes content from the official website to the article MadeUp Library, I will approach him as though he likely is affiliated and able to donate the text. Even if he tells me he is, though, I will still point him to Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. We don't take anybody's word for this, as we don't have any method of verifying identity on account creation. (Good idea to let that user know it may be a few days before he gets a response if he clears it through e-mail.)

If you're interested in learning more about how copyright problems are handled on Wikipedia, we do have a wikiproject assembled for this purpose at Wikipedia:WikiProject Copyright Cleanup, which includes a subpage entitled Wikipedia:WikiProject Copyright Cleanup/How to clean copyright infringements. This might be helpful; it might not. If you do glance, and it isn't helpful, please drop by that project's talk page and let us know so that we can fix it up. :)

Thanks again for finding those issues. Wikipedia takes copyright concerns seriously, and we rely on all contributors to keep an eye out for this chronic concern. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:02, 14 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome :). And thank you for the advice. I think the use of the {{close paraphrase}} tag was lack of boldness due to inexperience. I'm gradually getting over the 'I'm new here so what right do I have to...' feeling, but I think I was probably still suffering from it at that point :). I find myself 'new page patrolling' a fair bit, with an eye to looking for copyvios so I'll definitely look at the HowTo. Thanks again for the help :) TheSmuel (talk) 16:16, 14 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I completely understand the desire not to dive in the deep end. I am myself typically not that bold. :) If copyvios are your thing (or part of your thing), please, feel free to join in at WP:COPYCLEAN, whether you "officially" rank yourself in the membership or not. :D We are a relatively young project and still trying to get copyright concerns better organized on Wikipedia. Your being relatively new could come in handy, since we're hoping to make these easier for everyone. Anyway, copyright problem or not, feel free to drop by my talk page if you want a fresh perspective on anything. If you should by chance approach me about something I can't answer (like, say, coding new templates. :D), I can probably help you figure out who can. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:40, 14 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Dormant Sensory Organ

edit

Well, that's absolutely fine. I asked for it, you gave it. I'm just glad that someone's paying it some attention, although I did create the page for the research of organs that remain, aas of yet, wholly unexplained. My knowledge of the subject is limited to what is on that page (apart from what I have read elsewhere, like on the Pineal Gland page) and was sort of hoping that, before it is deleted, someone might just be able to save it with some hard facts. I am sure that you understand my reasoning, as I understand yours. You are right in thinking that the title came from the 1986 horror film, From Beyond, that is because I am, what shall we say, a geek and a foolish one on the grounds that I didn't know what else to call the page. Thankyou again for your message of warning. I hope that I will be able to have one last look before it goes. Oh uh, you're not going after The Unnamable (film) next are you? --Jefuab (talk) 20:50, 16 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Removal of Deletion

edit

Hello TheSmuel. My name is Miracler, I would like to inform you that, although I placed a message on the talk page of the article, I have 'removed' the deletion tag placed on the 'Dormant Sensory Organ' page. I hope, within the next few days, to develop the page into something better. Although I have not spoken to the author, I pressume he/she has no scientific backfground other than what he/she knows from films such as the one you specified on your note to the person. I have nothing against the way Jefuab lives (I would too if I could!) but you are right, the page needs to be improved. If you would be so kind as to leave it to me and others that are interested to sort it out? If you are not happy with this, read my message on the article's talk page and/or leave me a message on mine. Best wishes, --Miracler (talk) 08:09, 18 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Articles needing translation

edit

Thanks for your message, I was trying to find out what language the article was in, but I couldn't come to a conclusion, so I lazily left the tag as {{notenglish}}. Thanks for the site, it'll probs help me with any future problems. NPeeerbvsesz (Push) 16:12, 20 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello TheSmuel, I want to thank you for your message. Told someone I didn't like Andy Murray so, in revenge, he wiped the page... Thanks again and I'll have a go with that link!--Jefuab (talk) 16:44, 26 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hoax?

edit

I didn't base my research off that hoax website.. I simple put it in the wrong section I do apologize and I will fix it straight away! I am a history major and my specific degree is Romanian History which is what my article is about, but mostly the extended family of Vlad Tepes aka Vlad the Impaler. -Allie —Preceding unsigned comment added by AllieFrost (talkcontribs) 20:09, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

No need to apologise (I should not have proposed the article for deletion as it had been proposed already). As yet the article is unreferenced and seems to violate OR. History major or not, you should cite reliable, third party sources for the information that you add. I can't find a reliable source among the links on the page that links the story of the Highgate Vampire (the external link "Famous Hauntings / copeland family" is actually a mirror of that Wikipedia article) to the "Copeland Family". Unless you can add references to reliable sources, it is likely that the article will be deleted. --TheSmuel (talk) 20:32, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well.. Unfortunately when I did research this originally, the story was in the website that mirrored the wiki page about the highgate vampire and when I google it; it's still there, but I too can't seem to find where I had originally found the paragraph about it, which is distressing. The article actually has nothing to do with vampires at all, it's just related to the copeland name unfortunately and since it is linked and a rumoured theory I thought it belonged with the information already provided. The article is about the romanian royal family lineage that has long been forgotten and shouldn't be, but for other students of romanian history I always found this lineage interesting so I decided to make a wiki page about the romanian decendants. —Preceding unsigned comment added by AllieFrost (talkcontribs) 20:41, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Northamptonshire

edit

Hi TheSmuel! A Wikipedia:WikiProject Northamptonshire has now been created. If you wish to help out improving articles relating to anything in the county, please don't hesitate to go to the page and sign up!
BTW, I know you are interested in checking out for close paraphrasing and copy vio, perhaps you could help out and take a look at Kettering, particularly the older history logs, and let me know what you think. --Kudpung (talk) 15:39, 5 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

  •   Done :). Thanks for the invite. I have had a brief look at some of the passages referenced to Greenall's "A History of Kettering" and one or two do seem paraphrase-ish. I'll look a bit further and also get some advice from someone a bit more knowledgeable about copyright issues. --TheSmuel (talk) 08:11, 6 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Our page is in the process of being edited - the page about this company and their efforts are going to have many notible items such as effortless work for homeowners during several major catastrophys. Worcestershierre, Warwickshierre, and Everyshierre

edit

Hello TheSmuel! A non-British user seems to be attempting to suggest that the Brits are not pronouncing their own British place names correctly, and appears to believe that it is a policy of Wikipedia to instruct the Brits, through the use of the IPA, how British English should be pronounced. He/she also seems to be of the opinion that it is Wikipedia policy to regard British English by default as a rhotic language, which it is not. Some British Wikipedians are trying to avoid an edit conflict and have requested my support. I have added my comments to the debate the non-British user has has started in defence of his/her multiple, WP:BOLD? changes to IPA pronunciations of British place names. As a professional linguist I accord every version of English its own particular merits and my position here strictly concerns the way in which the IPA is interpreted and applied in the Wikipedia, and how the current policy may need to be changed through a truly representative consensus. If you would like to help resolve this issue, please see User talk:Kudpung#IPA, RP, etc. and User talk:Lfh#Warwickshire to get the background. Maybe you could then chime in with your views on the subject at Wikipedia talk:IPA for English#Rhoticity in place names. Thanks. --Kudpung (talk) 18:55, 12 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

WP Northamptonshire

Hi TheSmuel just to let you know some Northamptonshire articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release (which I never herd of until today). It can be seen here. It just advises to make some Northants articles better and I'm currently working on Northamptonshire/Kettering which is coming along nicely, but help would be appreciated, best Likelife (talk) 16:07, 4 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:06, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
