Dresden edit

Good comment on Dresden. I checked for a follow to mine but there was none and the article was pretty much the way it was when I last examined it. Thus, I felt inspired to fix a few things. One thing I would love to throw in the article under the War Crime section would be the response of the Allied brass and their enthusiasm for, I kid you not, killing Germans. I'm away from my "archives" at the moment, but I have a very reputable source that records several instances of this occuring. Interesting how at Nuremberg, such background investigation (i.e. anti-Semitic beliefs and incidences were used to show that the Holocaust was the culmination of such sentiments). I wonder why the same was not done in regards to Dresden?--72.92.8.6 07:57, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cite Web edit

Hello! Just a quick tip - when using Cite Web, make sure you use the title parameter (you probably have to add it manually). If you don't, a big red warning appears in the references section of your article. PKT(alk) 14:01, 27 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

PKT, Yes, it is the non-Commons one. I thought once you loaded it up to Commons, it would load onto the page. No such luck. Hrm...well, we'll see what happens.TheKurgan (talk) 21:41, 28 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use File:Edmund Fitzgerald Passing Under the Bluewater Bridge.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Edmund Fitzgerald Passing Under the Bluewater Bridge.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 14:15, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Stefan...Just wanted to let you know that I uploaded the rationale for using the Edmund Fitzgerald photo. I truly feel that it improves the Sarnia page quite a lot, and there is no way, obviously, for me to get a new image of the ship underway. See the image page for the full rebuttal. Sorry to have troubled you with this. I really thought I had covered all my bases. But, thanks for making sure it follows all the rules. My goal is at least GA status for the Sarnia article (which, I've sort of "adopted...:) ), or possibly even FA status if I can make it good enough! Anyway, talk to you soon.TheKurgan (talk) 15:25, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
I think that I made a mistake, so I have removed the tag about it being replaceable from the file information page. I am, however, not convinced that a non-free photo of a ship in an article about a city meets WP:NFCC#8 on contextual significance. --Stefan2 (talk) 19:49, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sarnia is one of the hubs of the lake freighter industry on the Great Lakes. Ships come up the Detroit River, through Lake St. Clair, and up the St. Clair River to Lake Huron, the Soo, and beyond. The largest grain elevator in Canada is in Sarnia and ships spend the winter here, as well. The Bluewater Bridge spans the St. Clair River between Sarnia and Port Huron, MI. The Fitz going upbound under the Bridge is an historic photo and highlights Sarnia's importance in the lake freighter industry.TheKurgan (talk) 20:06, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism edit

Where do we keep track if not on the talk page of the article? Or do we bother? Do we just revert and then ignore who did it?TheKurgan (talk) 00:00, 4 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

No sure where you got the idea we keep track of vandalism on article talk pages. Articles receive hundreds, sometimes thousands of edits that you call "vandalism" every month. Most of it is done by users who are new like you who and just created their account and are not sure what they're doing. Calling them out on the article's talk page as a vandal is not good etiquette, and is not assuming good faith, which is one of the five pillars of Wikipedia.
The article talk pages are intended for discussion centered around improving that article. For persistent and obvious disruptive edits, you can talk to the person who made them on their talk page and politely remind them not to vandalize the article again, or if needed ask an administrator to review their editing history and block them from editing Wikipedia for a short time.
By the way if you start a conversation with me on my talk page, please keep it there. I don't have your talk page on my watchlist and if you use Talk Back, ensure it's obvious what message I'm supposed to be responding to. Thanks.--Yankees76 Talk 15:05, 5 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
The person who vandalized the page put his OWN name into the Mayor's slot. Believe me, Yankees76, I can recognize what is and is not vandalism! I would never revert any true edits simply because I think they're "vandalism." I would only revert things that were incorrect. But putting yourself into an article as Mayor of the city in question cannot possibly be in good faith when there is no record of anyone named Mike Sawczuk ever being Mayor of Sarnia.TheKurgan (talk) 12:59, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Bluewater Bridge at Sunset.jpg edit

A tag has been placed on File:Bluewater Bridge at Sunset.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted images or text borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:21, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

My tag was db-imgcopyvio|url=http://www.villageofpointedward.com/gallery/photos/Dscf0044.jpg dated 03 July 2007 14:30:40 linked from http://www.villageofpointedward.com/gallery/photos.php Copyright © 2004 - 2007 The Corporation of the Village of Point Edward All Rights Reserved.. The image at 1280×960 pixels was much bigger than your 604×453pixel image File:Bluewater Bridge at Sunset.jpg, and an earlier date (03 July 2007 14:30:40). Had you or someone else previously uploaded the image under a different name at a different size?  Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:46, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Ron. Interesting that the two photos are so strikingly similar. Not a big deal. I just won't use it. Funny that when I looked for the photo itself, I couldn't find it. That's probably because the file is simply called DSCsomething or other (uploaded directly from a digital camera). No, we had not uploaded it at a different size. As I said, though, it's not a huge deal. Because of the similarity of the two photos, I'd rather just find a different photo instead of possibly causing another copyright infringement problem. There can be only one...TheKurgan (talk) 22:02, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

No. They are the same - 100% perfect overlap in PhotoShop (allowing for poorer quality of your photo when increased to the same size)- note that the one from www.villageofpointedward.com is full of Camera EXIF data - which shows it's a direct copy, untouched, of the camera's image. Your copy has zero EXIF data - someone has edited it - probably to reduce the size, and done in a way that has lost the EXIF data (very easy to lose, if you don't know how to keep it). If it is truly your photo then feel free to follow the procedure at WP:DCM to donate it (let me know and I will look out for the e-mail), and if you can lay hands on the original camera copy then so much better.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:19, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
P.S. EXIF says 2004.09.17 19:31:43, FijiPix2650; 1/450sec; F3.5; ISO 100...  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:26, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
