Adding predecessor state to Kenya's infobox
editHello. In this edit of yours, you said you plan to add predecessor states to all African countries' infoboxes. I've noticed you have a history of doing this before, such as here and here, even after being reverted. Is there a specific reason you keep trying to add these? If you look at the convention for most currently existing countries' infoboxes on Wikipedia, they do not usually show such information. It's usually only included on the infobox of previously existing states. MediaKill13 (talk) 20:00, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- I add these because it gives people a chance to look back at the history of the country in just one click, and plus there is already something similar to this on U.S. state infoboxes before their admission. Is there any specific reason not to add them? TheKumquatGuy2662 (talk) 19:43, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
- Well, there is no particular policy preventing it, but you did say that you wanted to add this specifically to African countries, here. What's so unique about African countries? Also, if you look at Template:Infobox country, it shows the standard form of the template when used on an existing country's infobox, e.g. the United Kingdom and Cameroon. Only the German Empire, which doesn't exist currently, has that predecessor field. So adding it, and especially adding it to only African countries, is highly unconventional. In any case, information about a country's previous political configuration is already included; for example in Kenya it shows the timeline of the political existence of the state, noting that it was a dominion between 1963 and 1964 and correctly linking to the article on the dominion. Your U.S. state example also reinforces this convention. If you look at the page of Virginia for instance, it includes Colony of Virginia in the "before statehood" field but not as a predecessor. Only on the Colony of Virginia page is the predecessor and successor state shown. MediaKill13 (talk) 20:09, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
- When I say I want to do it with African countries, I am using them as a starting point before moving on to other continents. I thought it would be easier for me than to go from alphabetical order. So no, I won't only be doing it to African countries. TheKumquatGuy2662 (talk) 23:41, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
- This still doesn't address the widespread consensus not to add this field in the infobox of existing countries. None of the articles we have on countries have this field, even featured articles like Germany, Japan, and India. If you're planning to make such a widespread change to all country articles, you should probably discuss it first on article talk pages to get a consensus before implementing it.
