Confusing charts and content in Japan and China culture articles

Hello @TheCultureDemystifier: this article may be of interest to you, it is badly in need of updating: Japanese values. A lot of the text has been copied from a Library of Congress publication, which is not considered COPYVIO because it's in the public domain, but it's not best practices to copy and paste. Knowing a bit about your interests in more up-to-date research in this field, I thought I'd drop you a note. I don't think that there should be a blanket removal of Ruth Benedict's work because it is historical; but it sure seems like the article could use some more current information. Thank you very much. I am interested to edit the article about Japanese values and I will work at it in the following days. I won't remove everything about Ruth Benedict's book, but I will write explanations that place the book in its historical context. I will also add material about the assessment of the book's core ideas by modern scholars. It is OK if I also use graphs (such as scatterplots or maps) along with the text? I added a map showing how Japanese culture compares with that of other countries on the emancipative values index proposed by Christian Welzel. There are some differences between this new map and the old one (which I tried to add to the page about the Culture of Japan). In the new map, countries with no available data are displayed in grey instead of black, in order not to be confused with those in dark red (which indicates very low emancipative values). There is no incorporated legend in the new map as I observed that the legend from the former map could hardly be read without zooming in. The index for most countries is updated to World Values Survey wave 7, published 8 days ago. Every roughly 5 years, a new World Values Survey wave is published, involving data from a larger number of countries. --TheCultureDemystifier (talk) 06:57, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi, TheCultureDemystifier, I did some copy editing and played around with the overall design. I edited the lede sentence by adding the words "beliefs and behaviors" following the word "goals". If that is incorrect, it can be deleted. Goal just did not seem to encapsulate the complexity of what values are (at least to my mind). I think the lede could use one more sentence as an opening to the article.

Design-wise, the map and the contents box were creating a "sandwich effect" WP:SANDWICH when viewed on a 13" screen, so I created a new section "Emancipative values". I think it works well, let me know what you think.

Then I added more "breathing room" to the article by adding line breaks within big block of text (design decision for readability). I did some general copy editing, like removing qualifying words like "very" and changed a "which" to "that" as per WP:MOS discussion about when to use "which" vs. "that".

After adding line breaks to the History section, I realized that an additional citation was needed, so I added a "citation needed" maintenance tag. I wasn't sure what to use as a citation, so I'll leave that up to you.

Please let me know what to think. You've really improved the article! Any thoughts on a section following the History section? I'm guessing that may be a good place to insert a few scatter plots. No hurries of course! Netherzone (talk) 12:37, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for arranging the text and pointing out if I need to search for better sources. I want to add information about other general cultural values (apart from emancipative values), as well as more specific domains of values. Scatterplots are useful for displaying two variables at the same time. After information about more types of values is added, scatterplots can be inserted into the page.

I changed the name of the first section from "Emanciptive values" to "In global perspective" since I started to add information about other types of values studied using a cross-cultural comparative approach. Keeping a separate section about each index of cultural characteristics would lead to the creation of too many sections with a relatively low amount of text.

Regarding the part after the "History of scholarship" section, I will add there information about cultural values related to specific domains such as education or business. I will illustrate that content with scatter plots. --TheCultureDemystifier (talk) 07:05, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

It's great to see this article shape up so nicely. Re: your comment about sections, there is an entry in the Wikipedia Manual of Style shortcut: WP:MOS with a section on formatting sections. If I'm not mistaken, there are six types of sub-sections. You might want to have a look at that to see if there is useful information on section formatting as you develop the article. I'm glad you changed the name of the first section, I didn't know what to call it, so I went with "Emancipative values", realizing not every reader would know what that means. Do you like "In global perspective" better than "Global perspective" or "Global perspectives". Well I hope you find the Manual of Style useful when creating/editing articles; I have also found The Missing Manual to be helpful - shortcut: WP:MAN. Netherzone (talk) 15:10, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
