Islamicist

edit

Hello TheCherryPanda!

You deleted the link "Islamic fundamentalist", but Wiktionary lists it as another meaning for the word "Islamicist". Is it valid?

Sorry for bothering you! 177.102.177.218 (talk) 05:13, 15 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi there! Don’t worry; it’s no bother at all!

To be completely frank, I can’t recall deleting the link that you said I did, but I’ll take your word for it.

To the extent of my knowledge, Islamicist, at least within the last decade, is not often used to refer to Islamic fundamentalism. Instead, the right term for such would be “Islamist”. The reason for this delineation between “Islamist” and “Islamicist” is because, generally speaking, the former relates to Islamic fundamentalism and the latter to Islamic studies (in academia)! TheCherryPanda (talk) 05:42, 15 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

I now remember the edit you speak of! I stand by my point that Islamicist nowadays is not really a synonym of Islamist like how it used to be, with Islamicist now generally referring to academic Islamic studies. That being said, it seems some people still use Islamicist as a synonym of Islamist and in the context of Islamic fundamentalism, so I’ll reverse my edit for now. Thank you for bringing this to my attention! TheCherryPanda (talk) 05:46, 15 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome! I understand you, that edit has been going on for some time. I didn't know that Islamicist is little used as a synonym for Islamic fundamentalist/Islamist. Thank you for the reply and information! 179.113.174.107 (talk) 00:13, 16 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
