He was born in the United States. He is not an immigrant. So he is an American. If you can add a citation to a reliable, verifiable, neutral, third party source which says that he wants to be known as an Italo-American, you can restore that. Otherwise, there is no basis for calling him such.

I assume you can use the source if it meets the requirement as a reliable, verifiable source on the Wikipedia Italy.
