Ancient Greek Wikisource

Bias on articles that interest me

I'm interested to know to what experience you are referring here? As far as I can tell, we've never even worked on any of the same articles, and never participated in the same AfD discussions, so which experience are we talking about here? If I've been biased, I'd like to be able to see where so I can evaluate it and make any changes necessary to remove that bias. I've "voted" both ways on articles of interest to me, and of course I'll fight for articles that I think are important. I don't think you'll find any editors here who won't do that. A number of the articles you babysit (mostly on extremely minor aspects of the anime/manga "fandom" or whatever) strike me as wholly non-notable. It occurs to me, though, that I oppose your election more because you do not have a certain "polymathic" quality which I think administrators should have (and I frankly don't wish to argue my case as to why -- I feel it's my prerogative to have any criteria I please when I vote), and appear quite narrowly focused on Japanese pop culture. I'm not arguing about your vote. I agree that you can vote any way you choose, for any reason you choose. I just want to improve, and so I am asking for your feedback so I can evaluate it. If there is anything more specific than what you have stated above, I'm open to your comments.

As for my focus on all things Japan-related (which is actually quite a broad range of subjects, all things considered), that's mainly because editing and improving Wikipedia is a hobby, and I'd rather focus on items which interest me and about which I have some knowledge because I find that more enjoyable than trying to jump into a topic about which I know nothing when I'm doing something to relax. I imagine that almost all of the editors here have one or two topics which are their main focus.

If you look through my approximately 20,000 edits, you'll see that I do edit articles outside of those Japan-related, although it's not terribly frequently due to the reasons I gave above. Right - no assertion of notability. Saying the subject invented the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale is an assertion of notability. The proper action, given the formatting of the article, would be to move material about the SSHS to the first paragraph, not to nominate for speedy deletion. Yes, I am certainly aware now that the article is probably not worthy of deletion, and apologize for my mistake. I further apologize for not notifying you; it was a mere oversight and you'll find if you look at my contributions that I am indeed in the habit of notifying the authors of candidates for speedy deletion -- even when those candidates were not tagged as such by me! It was a mere oversight.

However, I maintain that I was blameless in tagging the article as a CSD. I acted on the information I had at the time.

I certainly don't think any of this warrants some sort of ridiculous grudge and such uncivil behavior. Please calm down!

I didn't even nominate it. I was just supporting whoever did. And they didn't nominate it "on the basis that it was about a person, band, club, etc"; they nominated it on the basis that it contained no proof of notability, per WP:CSD criterion A7. It also fit criterion A1.

I find it interesting that you're calling me unprofessional, considering how very worked up you're getting about this. Calm down.

Yes, I was quite worked up wasn't I? Forgive my lack of tolerance for stupid acts (not a personal attack, but an insult to your actions). Well sorry for the incorrect accusation on marking the article. You did, however, agree to delete it.

However, if you read what you linked to me, paid attention at all to the content of what you agreed to delete, and engaged cranial matter, you should notice that my stub article on Hardware Direct MIDI Routing was not an appropriate candidate for speedy deletion under notability as the deletion policy only allows for speedy deletion if the article is:

about a non-notable person, group, band, company, club, or website that does not even assert the notability of the topic

Had you been doing your work, you would have noticed that the article is not about a "person, group, band, company, club, or website". Perhaps you forgot to read footnote 5 of the notability policy as well as failing to see that speedy deletion is not justified under WP:CSD and that the article was additionally tagged as hangon.

I will consider this correspondence and your reply as satisfying step 2 of the dispute resolution procedures and will escalate tomorrow if still not corrected. Since User:Eagle_101 and yourself both took part to delete an article outside of Wikipedia policy, I will address both of you in the complaint. And thank you for notifying me via my talk page.

You still haven't gotten around to the part where you explain away how the article qualifies under criterion A1. Which is, you know, what I actually said -- A7 was the other user's reason.

You're also forgetting the fact that we didn't delete the article. An admin did. An admin who agreed with the tagging user and I. That's the person you want to go after with your mighty Wikipedia vengeance.

And you can't actually force either of us to recreate the article, I'm afraid. That's your problem. Why don't you just recreate it? Granted, I'll tag it for deletion myself, but maybe you'll get lucky and get an admin who agrees with you this time. tgies 08:37, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Hello again. Thank you for the wonderful work you did on this topic (on User:Eagle 101's talkpage). I didn't want to just re-create without resolving the dispute about why it was deleted. Keep in mind that this article was a stub, intended as a starting point to create helpful information. Regardless of my lack of congeniality, the rules for speedy deletion under "A7" (I'm slowly learning all of this Wikipedia slang) were clearly not satisfied, I hope that you are able to see this. I also would hope that you can at least least understand my frustration with having to fight an A7 assertion on this!

As to the A1 assertion, I have to contest it, although this is at least REASONABLE argument! My only argument with A1 is that the stub did correctly define what Hardware Direct MIDI Routing was (incorrect as the association with the computer motherboard HDMR slot was). The stub did not explore the significance of lag in long midi chains (mostly that it can screw up your music because you end up with a delay) and how Hardware Direct MIDI Routing was intended to address that issue. I'm behind on MIDI stuff since most of my music these days is acoustic. The best I could come up with in my research was that it was a new type of musical instrument interface (I know what MIDI connectors look like, I still use a MIDI controller for my preamp). Finding some vague information about it being some type of audio interface, I was beginning to suspect that it was some interface transmitting MIDI as well as analog and/or digital audio.

Also, I didn't intend to force anybody to recreate the article, so much as convince the admin to roll back the deletion (it should still be stored somewhere). I had mistaken you for an admin and I'm now confused as to who the admin was who approved it. In fact, I have not yet been able to figure out who this person was or how to contact them. This is it's entry in the deletion log, but it only lists User:Eagle_101. Is he an admin? It would seem odd that the person who nominated the page for speedy deletion would be able to perform the deletion.

So, I apologize for my attacking and will try to be more civil (I don't think I really went off on you as much as Eagle). At the same time, I hope that if an article is to be CSD for a bogus reason, users like yourself can be responsible enough to disagree. Feel free to re-nominate it under A1 if you believe that's appropriate, but don't support a bogus A7 assertion.

Moving forward, I'm thinking there should be an article on the HDMR interface (similar to the articles Audio/modem riser, Advanced Communications Riser, and Communications and Networking Riser that you linked). Were you able to determine what HDMR actually stood for anywhere? I haven't been able to determine that at all. HDMR and ASRock has 25k googles, so there should be no dispute about it's notability.

Clouds

I don't accept your definition of Clouds not being 'notable'. If you read the sources I left at the foot of the page, you'd find all the sources and verification you need. A cursory glance at Amazon. com, both in the Uk and the Usa, will show you who Clouds were. If you checked the Clouds website (www.cloudsmusic.com) as I originally suggested, you'd find yet more articles and references, including the 4 page MOJO Magazine article about Clouds/1-2-3 which credited them with 'The Birth of Prog', and in which, David Bowie describles Billy Ritchie as 'an unrecognised genius'. 'The History of Scottish Rock & Pop' is a BBC book (Guinness Publishing) - there seems ample source confirmation of everything said in the article. Unless the criteria is something completely different than I understand it to be, I don't see how the band can be dismissed as 'not notable'. Thank you for responding so promptly, and for the pointers/links....as regards the WP:MUSIC link, Clouds pass on sections 1;4;5;6;12. They made many recordings for Island Records; Chrysalis Records; London Deram, and recently, BGO; they took part in several major tours of both the UK (including The Albert Hall - reviewed in the Sunday Times) and Europe (The Island Records tour which featured 4 groups, Jethro Tull;Clouds; Spooky Tooth; Free -in that order of billing), plus two American tours which included several appearances at the Fillmores East and West. If that is indeed the case, you may be correct in asserting that the band in question is worthy of inclusion on Wikipedia -- my apologies for any inconvenience if this turns out to be the case! Thank you for that message, and as you've also noted, I'm rather splashing around in the water, having not yet learned to swim in this pool - only joined an hour or so ago! So I do appreciate the patience and help . It's probably my ignorance of computers, but at the moment, I can't see the type-key that gives the symbol you mention as a shortcut. As regards the article and its inclusion, I do understand that you can't just let anyone type anything unsubstantiated into the system, but all the facts concerning Clouds are very much in the public domain, in the books and articles I've cited, as well as the recording history of the band. Amazon is one current easy source - a good link is 'Scrapbook/Watercolour Days' , two of the Clouds albums currently available. Colin Larkin's music business reference work 'The Encyclopedia of Popular Music' is another good pointer, though Colin is currently undertaking a new contribution regarding Clouds to take account of relatively recent history re-writes. The article in question does not contain any assertion of notability of the subject, and as such I must assume it does not meet the notability guidelines for inclusion in Wikipedia. Is the article ok now? I have no relation or affiliation to this organization, I just think they are vital to disabled people in Nevada; what they do is very good. I do not like my work being deleted while and I am researching and developing it, as I was doing this morning. As a person with a disability it is tiring when people think we are not important, and our lives and opinions do not count since we are such a small minority. The reason why I asked you which part of the article you had a problem with is because all of the other posts on your talk page have to do with speedy deletions and some of them were not even upheld. I apologize if I acted in error — both I and the admin who deleted the article had to act on the information we had at the time, which evidently did not indicate to either of us the notability of the material. I see now you have added some assertion of notability to the article, which changes matters. Sorry for the inconvenience. In the future, though, please be careful to add some assertion of notability at the same time as you create an article, so nobody gets confused. Also, as you were told before, if you contest the deletion of an article, you can always add {{hangon}} to the article to forestall its deletion while you fix the problem.

As for all the comments on my talk page being about speedy deletion candidates, this is only the case because I recently archived the old comments from my talk page. And speedy deletions don't go through all the time; it's nothing unusual.

Tags in San Adrian tunnel

Hi, I had just created the article in the Wikipedia and I found it full of tags. It is a real nuisance to see the tags there. I am not a long-standing editor but I don't think it's a good way of encouraging to build Wikipedia. Besides, when I see the article with my username last updates turn up, otherwise they don't. Help in Translation

Hi, my name is Giorgio. I'm not very active in english Wikipedia because the italian one needs more help. In fact Italy needs help. But I'm strongly partecipating in Commons (in english). Anyway I'm italian, from Florence, and I'm working with other people on a project, in italian Wikipedia, related to my hometown Montevarchi. In Commons we are uploading pictures of the city and its people. So, in Montevarchi lived an admiral that was naval attachè in Tokyo from 1904 to 1906. But at that time he was just a lieutenant. In his personal archive, we digitalize, we found 2 documents written in japanese. About one we were able to find somebody to translate it [2] (even if I don't know the translation is correct) but about this other one not [3]. Hey, I actually nominated that article for deletion in ignorance of the guidelines permitting articles which are generally-accessible introductions to a topic which already has its own article. Somebody Else's Problem

I see you just added {{refimprove}} and {{unencyclopedic}} tags to this article, and I thought it would be useful if I explain what I am doing there.

• This phrase has passed into popular culture, and variations on it have been used in many different contexts. I will add at least a dozen references to use of this phrase, including uses by leading politicians referring to issues of widespread public concern.
• I've asked a Psychology student to advise on the best links for the perception side.
• In respect of the Douglas Adams book, there's no article on this piece of imaginary technology. I will try to add some further references to the SEP field. For example, the greater the distance of the observer to the matter, the more likely it is to be seen as "somebody else's problem". This is perhaps unsurprising to a psychologist but it raises the possibility that the field may be amplified rather than attenuated by distance. This might allow a reference to the real issue which is "locality of reference" etc.
• There may also be scope for discussion of Douglas Adam's intentions when he described this phenomenon.

I will remove the {{refimprove}} tag when I have built up a body of references. But I'm not sure where you are coming from on the {{unencyclopedic}} tag, so please can you explain? I'll look for your comment here on your talk page. Thanks - Pointillist (talk) 00:34, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

The phrase is originally from the popular culture, so that point is nil. I really doubt there are so many examples of someone using the phrase in a way which could definitively be traced back to the Douglas Adams book.

I personally suspect that this is a bit of a sketchy topic for an article, but I defer to the judgement of other editors to confirm these suspicions. I added the {{unencyclopedic}} tag to draw critical attention to the article to find out if other editors think the same thing. Anyone is welcome to remove it, though I'd recommend that you not do so yourself.

RE: Account Creation Interface

You assume correctly. If you don't use the interface for over 45 days, your account is suspended. Assuming that you wish to start using it again, I have unsuspended it. You should now be able to access it again.
As for if I am the correct point of contact, any of the admins (first section of this list) are suitable point of contacts. Transgender pronouns

I don't think Wikipedia has a responsibility to anyone to hide information about them that is public. I'm pretty sure there is a WP:BIO policy about that, but I'm too lazy to find it right now. Also, Wendy Carlos has a page on her web site specifically about her transition, so maybe she's given up on trying to obscure that. Obviously that doesn't matter in the general case... anyway, it all comes down to NPOV, which is the foundation for my view on pronouns, and also implies that we shouldn't cede to the point of view of a subject of a biography by leaving out information that would be logical to include if they didn't want it to be left out. Yes, this is my opinion on the matter exactly. I was just curious about what you thought about it. There seems to be a small contingent which believes in the right of living persons to demand certain omissions from biographical articles about them.

Possible problem with recent advisor.js edits

Hello, Tgies. I noticed on Quadrature amplitude modulation, you used advisor.js to make this edit. The portion at line 71 broke the display of the maths.
