Can I get some advice?

Hi Giano. I'm a long-time lurker on this site, usually just reading about things that interest me and fixing minor typos and such. I came upon an article (Wounded Knee incident) that I really think needs a complete re-write and I would appreciate your advice on how to go about it. I've noticed that you often do a lot of writing on one of your subpages and then put the article in the main space. To fix this page, should I copy and paste the Wounded Knee incident page into a subpage under my name where I can work on it at my leisure? I would then re-write it completely, fixing all the citations and such. Would I then copy and paste it back into the mainspace article or how does that work? I also don't want to get into an editing war with previous editors of that page, so should I announce my intentions on the talk page first? Any advice you can give me would be appreciated. --SGT Tex 18:31, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

You first create the page User:SGT Tex/Wounded Knee incident then paste in the existing page and re-write it, privately in user space, then when you have finished just paste your new page back into main space, and announce it as a re-write in the edit summary. Take note though of any useful information which may be added to the page between these stages. So it is probably a good idea to announce on the talk page what you are doing, so others don't waste their time. The problems arise if anyone else edits the page in your use space (which they should not do without an invitation)then you cannot just past back because you would lose other peoples credits in the history - so you ask a friendly admin to merge the history pages. It is quite simple really. Giano 23:12, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

My signature

According to Microsoft Word, it's a mix of Times New Roman and MS Mincho. I'd never even heard of the latter. I copied the characters from some website, I can't remember what now. I'll change it if I find out lots of people can't read it. Are you using Internet Explorer by any chance? It wouldn't surprise me if it didn't work in IE. If you are, get Firefox! Nuns and British humour

You're not alone. See this thread. It's a pun on wearing the soap down, and is designed to leave the listener wondering (a) what two nuns would be doing in a bath together and (b) why the soap is wearing down so quickly. Note about hodgepodge

Hello, I noticed that you like to fight vandalism and I thought that I might be able to help. I have complied the best vandalism fighting tools into a single javascript file that I call "Hodgepodge" and I thought you might be interested in it. The file, once added to your monobook, can help you fight vandalism much much easier and quicker than without the scripts. The tool can be found here: User:Wikidudeman/Hodgepodge. Read the page for information on how to install as well as compatibility issues. If you have any questions then please leave me a note on my talkpage. Thanks.Wikidudeman (talk) 17:25, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Protection of Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration/IRC/Proposed decision

On 17 January, following a series of edits to Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration/IRC/Proposed decision, User:FloNight protected the page and added the following in an edit summary: "I protected the page from all editing until the case is closed or edits all agree to make all productive comments about the proposed ruling and not other editors". Flonight has not left any further messages as yet, so I am posting this message to all those who edited the page in this period, and asking them to consider signing this section at Flonight's talk page indicating that they will abide by this request. Hopefully this will help move the situation forward, and enable the talk page to be unprotected (with any necessary warnings added) so that any editor (including those uninvolved in this) can comment on the proposed decision. Thank you. Carcharoth (talk) 05:45, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

I only edited the page twice to point out glaringly obvious irony. I think it's silly to protect the page, but I have nothing more to do with it. SGT Tex (talk) 22:12, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Bishzilla Arbcom Election Discussion Thing

Good morning. We're trying to keep all discussion on individual candidates on one discussion page, so I've moved one of your comments under the section entitled "Hear Ye, Hear Ye" from Wikipedia talk:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2008/Candidate statements/Bishzilla/Questions for the candidate to Wikipedia talk:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2008/Vote/Bishzilla. The question talk page was then redirected. I apologize for any inconvenience this might cause; the oversight was mine in not redirecting the page in the first place. AWB

Hi there Tex. I see your using AWB to change your signature from your old username to your new one. First off, congratulations on being my fiftieth oppose! :) I noticed you didn't leave a rationale, so I thought I'd stop by and see what specific concerns you had about my candidacy. If there's anything you'd like me to explain or clear up, please feel free to ask. Thanks very much, and happy editing! --Hemlock Martinis (talk) 20:02, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Hemlock. Nothing personal; I just feel there are better candidates running. And I didn't really like the whole "punishment" point in your statement. I don't think arbcom's job should be to "punish" anyone. I'm probably too optimistic about that, but that's how I feel. Tex (talk) 20:16, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
No worries, we're very lucky to have a good slate of candidates this year. I hadn't noticed the punishment thing before but you're right, that's a poor word choice on my part. My point is that because some editors are perceived as being more powerful or special than others, Arbitrators are either hesitant to issue rulings against them or allies of them. I've changed it to "sanction", which better reflects my meaning. Since ArbCom's goal is (or should be) to create a stable environment in which productive building of the encyclopedia is not infringed, purely punitive measures against editors are unreasonable. In that, I completely agree. Anyways, thanks for replying to my query. Happy editing! --Hemlock Martinis (talk) 20:24, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Thank you. That does look better and I do agree with it. You've convinced me. Good luck. Tex (talk) 20:41, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

FT RFA request for clarification

I noticed your vote on the Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/FlyingToaster_2. You said "Oppose per Giano". Giano's oppose was "A very poor idea. This editor is naive, uniformed and has an appalling record regarding content. One wonders why these people come here, any fool can sit and talk all day, and many do". I can parse your text in two ways: you slavishly follow Giano's oppose; or you believe that Giano had given good reasons and agreed with them. Your subsequent reply on that thread is difficult to interpret. The fragment "Do I think Giano provided enough reason that this person should not be an admin? Yes I do." seems to suggest the latter, though it could also be interpreted as the former. Do you care to clarify your position on this (now successful) RFA? William M. Connolley (talk) 11:19, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello William. I didn't really have time to go into a long explaination when I first opposed, but I gave several reasons why I don't think Flying Toaster should be an admin in my follow-up. Besides agreeing with Giano that a lot of current admins like to sit and talk all day, I also said I don't like the fact that FT was on IRC a lot. I also said that they don't do a lot of article work. If you choose to only read the one about Giano giving enough reason, that's fine. I'm not sure why you're coming here asking for clarification when it was already closed as successful. Does it really matter at this point? I'm also curious why you have become FT's spokesman. Also, if I had seen your support comment before I decided to support or oppose, I would have opposed based solely on your comment, so you're not really doing FT any service. Tex (talk) 14:39, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
I'm not FT's spokesman; I'm sorry if you got that impression. Your oppose was (and remains) hard to parse; I was interested in a clarification. Alas I don't think you've really done that (other than making your sentiment clear): Besides agreeing with Giano that a lot of current admins like to sit and talk all day is a comment on existing admins, not a reason to oppose another one. Does it really matter at this point? - only insofar as it affects my opinion of you. But you've clarified that aspect for me (thank you), so there is perhaps no need to continue here William M. Connolley (talk) 15:06, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
You are correct that my comment was on existing admins, not a reason to oppose another one. How about if I said this: since FT tends to hang out on IRC and chat on various talk pages and RFAs rather than spending much time on article building, I think they would also become one of those admins that just sit and chat all day. And I don't believe we need more of those. Does that clarify things? And really, William, I'm not at all concerned what your opinion of me is. Have a nice day. Tex (talk) 15:40, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
  • Connolley, what sad thing to do, turn up here winging and complaining. I made a comment on you here [3] on your own page, it seems I was more correct than I beleived even then. Flying Toaster or whatever it is she calls herself has no business to be an admin, her first action was to chatter on #Admins. However, the community in its wisdom elected her. Do you hear any of us complaining? Is anyone questioning the RFA? Asking for a re-run? A recount? - No! So really you have nothing to worry about or badger people about. In short Connolley you are rather a nuisance here, now run along and chat on #admins or whatever it is you do to pass you obviously huge amount of free time. Adieu. Giano (talk) 20:34, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
I have raised the matter of Connolley's deplorable conduct here [4]. Giano (talk) 20:45, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
