Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Arts moved to draftspace edit

An article you recently created, Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Arts, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Hi Gpkp|t]

I was just wondering what would be necessary to launch the Katherine Mulherin page ! How many sources are necessary in order to publish ?

Should I be changing the name of the page to suit an autobiographical title ?

Thank you - t.

DYK for Tara Downs edit

On 13 April 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tara Downs, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Tara Downs co-founded the Tomorrow Gallery in a converted paintball studio in Toronto? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tara Downs. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Tara Downs), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Tara Downs edits edit

Hi, I'm writing to follow up on certain edits you have been making to the Tara Downs article: [1], [2], [3], because as noted in the first edit summary when I restored the previous content, the line "In 2011, Downs founded the Tomorrow Gallery with Aleksander Hardashnakov and Hugh Scott-Douglas in a Toronto warehouse that had previously housed a paintball studio" is sourced to Goodbye to Yesterday: Toronto’s Tomorrow Gallery Opens in New York (ArtNews, 2014). Every time you have changed the text, I have reviewed the three sources for this line and not found support for the changes, which is why other edit summaries also note this and WP:OR. Please note that per WP:BRD, proposed changes can be discussed further on the article Talk page, especially if you have concerns about the content and sources. Thank you, Beccaynr (talk) 04:20, 25 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

(the comment below has been moved from the top of my Talk page; let's keep the discussion either here or at the article Talk page) - Beccaynr (talk) 04:42, 25 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Beccaynr,

Thanks for the reference I just saw that in the article when you posted it.

I was actually flagged/ notified by another wiki writer in the community a few days ago who saw the paintball studio reference and flagged me I guess to bring it to my attention as it caused some alarm.

I was also anxious when I saw that it was reappearing and I was on edge just due to intensifying gun violence and street culture in Toronto, where I live. I have worked with this circle of artists before and I remember there was a shooting after a gallery event that I hosted in the east end a few years prior to Tomorrow Gallery in 2010 ( I think Tara was there ) and I think that it caused a disturbance in the community. I lived in the studio building referenced at this time and am familiar with the space, it is interesting that it was noted/ brought to light in the article as the space was also really renowned for housing Drake’s recording studio ( who was frequently around when I lived there ) as well as a number of other pretty pretentious projects.

I keep removing it because I still live in Toronto and I feel like it puts unnecessary violent implications that are potentially dangerous and carry a negative syntax for following artists.

Is there any way to keep the articles cited without talking about paintball guns/ paintball ? Let me know !

Thanks -t.

I'm glad I followed up with you about this, and I appreciate your perspective. As noted above on your Talk page, the studio origin story was a DYK hook on the main page on April 13, so I quickly restored your first change to that line on April 13 to reflect the DYK consensus. I think it may be possible to add sourced content to the article to emphasize how Downs improved the studio from what it was, which could enhance the encyclopedic content by providing more context. However, one of the Wikipedia policies that seems relevant to consider is WP:NOTCENSORED, e.g. Attempting to ensure that articles and images will be acceptable to all readers, or will adhere to general social or religious norms, is incompatible with the purposes of an encyclopedia, so the removal of reliably sourced content about the origin of the studio based on the concerns you are raising appears to be discouraged by that policy. But this could also be further discussed on the article Talk page to seek input from other editors. Thank you, Beccaynr (talk) 05:25, 25 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Beccaynr !

Thanks ! I think that may have been why that community member had flagged this particular part of the article in the first place... This was about 2 weeks ago and I agreed as it seemed out of context, I am new to wiki so even following up in this chat conversation is new to me. I was also really interested in writing a Wiki page for Katherine Mulherin who is also another strong feminist and community activist via curator in the Toronto art community who committed suicide in 2019 ( right after the MOCCA relocated to Sterling Rd across from where Tomorrow Gallery had been). I wrote an entire article and someone took it off and put into my sandbox or draftspace, and then another community member deleted it entirely so things seem really inexplicable sometimes.

I think my main concern is keeping and maintaining a safe environment for younger generations. From my perspective the paintball studio was not the principle utilitarian use designed for the building in its historical context. The building was not constructed for the purpose of the paintball studio nor did the owner of the paintball studio own the building. It is merely another tenant amongst many of the tenants in the building so it is really just a literary device that plays off drama and potential gun violence. Overall I believe the gallery structures, artists and literary works revolving around this system are self sustainable and do not particularly rely on the context of a paintball studio to sustain its relevance.

You are so good at writing Wikipedia articles ! I love how you have everything sorted out I'm sorry for having to submerge your citations.

Thanks so much for writing ! I was worried at first when the correction kept appearing so persistently because I didn't know who it was so I am glad we got in contact I feel so much safer knowing it was you writing and not a crazed paintball enthusiast !

In my own experience, it has taken awhile for me to become familiar with the policies and guidelines, as well as the various features of Wikipedia, after a lot of reading and clicking around. Please note you can see who has made changes to an article at the View History tab on any article, e.g Tara Downs: Revision history along with the edit summaries that explain the changes. I linked to the Wikipedia no original research policy because it seems important to consider with regard to unsourced information. However, if sources are available about the building, it seems possible that an article could be written about the building, per WP:NBUILD, and then linked to the Tara Downs article as a way to incorporate the context - it may be WP:UNDUE weight to give the building itself a lot of attention in an article focused on Tara Downs and her experience.
Also, when I review your contributions, it appears that your Draft:Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Arts article still exists, but it was draftified as "not ready for mainspace" and marked with a template noting the lack of sources. Based on my quick review, it looks like there is more content about Katharine Mulherin herself, and it may be more feasible to write an article for her instead of her gallery, depending on the sources that can be found. The WP:NCORP guidelines offers a sourcing roadmap for articles about organizations and companies, and based on the information currently in the article, it seems possible that there may be more sources to support WP:BASIC notability for a biography. When I am writing articles, I look for sources first, and then write the content, and I think this can help avoid inadvertantly contributing original research to an article; based on a quick search, there are multiple independent and reliable sources offering in-depth coverage: Toronto Life (2019), Toronto Star (2019), Globe and Mail (2019), Toronto Now (2019), ArtNews (2019), Canadianart (2019), ArtForum (2019), all of which suggest that there are additional sources available about her and her career. You could start a new draft article for her biography in your userspace, and develop it from the information available in the sources - if you have questions, please feel free to ask me. (But please click the "New Section" tab on my Talk page if you would like to leave a message there). Thank you, Beccaynr (talk) 15:55, 25 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Beccaynr !

Omg wow ! Thank you so much for the citations and links for the Katherine Mulherin page, you work so quickly and effectively ! Do you want to edit the Katherine Mulherin Contemporary Projects with me ? Do you think it should just be renamed Katherine Mulherin and sort of directed into a formatted auto biography ? If I add about 10 citations/ sources do you think it would be safe to launch the page for further editing ?

I'm glad Tara is still alive I should PM her and show her the page :) !

You did such a great job thank you so much for everything !

- t.

Hi, I would be happy to help, although my availability may be somewhat limited over the next week - I think your work on the Draft is a substantial improvement, and overall looks more like a biography than an article about her gallery. I think it may make sense to try to develop two articles - one for her gallery, and one for her. Additional research is needed, but you could create a draft in your sandbox for her (I will be able to view and edit), move the biography information into it and add more from the sources, and then conduct more research about her gallery to build out the existing draft. Then, if there are enough sources per WP:NCORP, the article about her gallery can be linked to the article about her. Does that sound like a plan? For a biography, it can be helpful to have an 'Early life and education' section, as well as a 'Career' and 'Personal life' section. An example of how this structure can look is in an article I created: Angela Glover Blackwell. For Mulherin, there may also be a 'Legacy' section that could be developed, depending on the information from sources. Please let me know if you have any questions. Beccaynr (talk) 00:44, 26 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Beccaynr !

Wow the Angela Glover Blackwell page looks fantastic ! It is super professional ! Thank you so much for your advice on the Katherine Mulherin page I will definitely try to figure out how to create a second page for her biography. I hope it does not get too confusing, I hope that there is enough information on her life to fill both pages. I feel like her death was so unexpected, I remember being shocked because she was such a great lady and I think a lot of people took her for granted. I know she has 2 sons who are still around as well so that might be a good addition for her personal page. I am currently working at hospital/ rehab facility in Toronto so we are super busy as well ! Today was my day off so I am glad we were able to get into this type of data, its such a refreshing change. Hopefully the page comes together nicely I really love writing and wikipedia is such a great outlet. You are fantastic !

Thanks again for everything :)

Cheers, and thank you! I have added your Talk page to my Watchlist, so please keep me posted on your progress. Thanks again, Beccaynr (talk) 01:58, 26 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Katharine Mulherin edit

Hi Taya, I suggest that you start a new draft article for Katharine Mulherin. Use at least 3 reliable, independent sources and this should be sufficient to show notabiltiy. The draft on the art project will probably continue to be declined as non-notable. MurielMary (talk) 04:33, 27 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
