Wikimedia Stories Project
My name is Victor Grigas and I'm a Storyteller at the Wikimedia Foundation. We're exploring new ways to explain why Wikipedia is so special and we’ve started a Wikipedia Stories Project, where we’re chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community, especially editors and active contributors in the movement like you. I'll be traveling to Wikimania next month to collect stories for our 2011 Fundraiser. While there I'd love the chance to meet with you and hear your thoughts about Wikipedia. We’ll have a schedule of available times for you to sign up if you’re interested, but right now, we’d like to make the initial contact to gauge your interest. Please let me know by emailing me at vgrigas@wikimedia.org or responding on my talk page.
thank you,

Suggestion or thoughts
I see that your students are going to be writing Wikipedia articles. Two comments or suggestions:
- PLEASE urge your students to adhere to WP:SECONDARY.
- I cannot really imagine what further could be said about mercury(II) thiocyanate, which is a very specialized compound with a relatively big article already. If you are looking for suggestions, I can provide other more important compounds. Please discourage your students from insertin esoteric (i.e. primary) references into this article.
Thanks, --Smokefoot (talk) 22:54, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for your comments. There are a long way to go and your support will be needed.
- First and foremost, students must complete online training. It will cover the ref/source issues. So far, only one has completed that.
- The topic must be one of the three: chemical, equipment or reaction used/taught in the class. Obviously, mercury(II) thiocyanate and a few other articles are not in the three catagories. I put it up for our record purpose and will ask students to reconsider it.
- I understand your position on primary/secondary sources. I think we mean the same thing but may refer to different page of the policy. Wikipedia:Identifying_and_using_primary_and_secondary_sources#.22Secondary.22_is_not_another_way_to_spell_.22good.22. I surely don't want my students to add esoteric information nor use unreliable sources.
It will take time before I can get everyone trained and assigned with an appropriate topic. Some students may be removed from this program to take the final exam instead.
I appreciate your patience and your support in the weeks to come. --Taweetham (talk) 03:23, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- I have taught many students who contributed to Wikipedia and came to the conclusion that "training" is a distraction from teaching them the subject. Just get them to write an essay, then post it to the Talk page or park it in a Sandbox for someone experienced to format. One of the other topics, orbital hybridization is a rather sophisticated article maintained by PhD-level editors. Crystallization may be similarly mature. Here is a list of potential topics: User:Skysmith/Missing topics about Chemistry --Smokefoot (talk) 13:26, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
Thanks again for your comments/concerns regarding this matter.
- As I have mentioned earlier, many of topics are not appropriate yet. I do agree that it is difficult to make a substantial contribution to orbital hybridization or Crystallization. However, for record keeping purpose, their nomination for a topic will be recorded as soon as it is received. After students complete their training, they will be at a better position to reconsider the topic.
- The target for this assignment is at least five sentences, two uploads and one reference only. We stick to quality rather than quantity. I cannot imagine anyone writing an essay anywhere with this length target.

Possible photographic help
I got an email at OTRS inquiring about a possible photography contest. I see from your talk page (located via Kudpung) that it is about to happen. The person who contacted us is a retired professional photographer, but I infer that they are not a regular editor. I sent a response encouraging them to post on this talk page, or as a fallback to send you an email. This is just a heads up that that might occur. The person sounded quite willing to be very helpful indicating that if you identify locations needing photographs they can make it happen.--S Philbrick(Talk) 18:51, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

Grants
@Kudpung: In London last year I had talks with the WMF about me doing workshops and/or editathons in universities/Ratchapats in TH. As there are only 4 days left to go before closure for applications, the WMF has asked me again if I am still interested in applying for Individual Engagement Grant (IEG) or a Project and Event grant (PEG). I don't want to tread on the toes of any work your user group is doing in BKK - in fact I would like it to be part of anything I propose and I would also need your personal help. Please let me know as quickly as possible so that I can go ahead with the application. You can also call me -you have my number. Thanks. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:54, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
- You are welcome to send a grant application of any kind to WMF. However, my colleagues and I are quite overloaded with activities in Bangkok. It would be difficult to stretch our resource to cover other parts of Thailand. My suggestion for you at this moment is to gather people in your area. Though we are working on different projects and different regions, all of our activities will eventually be part of the WMTH chapter in the future. --Taweetham (talk) 04:49, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. General patterns of problem with student edits
I have removed large sections of content from several articles edited by students in this course due to WP:NOTMANUAL. They were paragraphs detailing how to label waste containers, how to prepared solutions, and other lab-manual or university-policy details that are not appropriate for our encyclopedia. You might want to remind your students that they are writing factual content about the topics, not instructions for students how to do experiments. DMacks (talk) 19:29, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
- @DMacks and Athikhun.suw: Thank you very much for your message. We hate to see non-encyclopedia contents too. It may be too late for this term but we will stress more next term about these common issues. Also, we will try to be more selective to get the number of participating students down to a manageable size. --Taweetham (talk) 02:49, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
- @DMacks: As a campus volunteer for the course, I apologize on behalf of the students for the issues. We did remind them and emphasized that they should follow very carefully the Wikipedia:Manual of Style. I will try my best to solve these issues as we're approaching the final weeks of the class, and of course make it better next term. Thanks. --Athikhun.suw (talk) 04:55, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

- User:KhomchatK was doing substantial copyvio on many articles, and tried several types of deception to attempt to mask it. Use of Education Extension
Hello Taweetham! I am Vahid Masrour, part of the Education Team at WMF. I'm reaching out to you regarding your activities with the Education Extension. We have been announcing that the Education Extension is ont its way to being turned off on all wikis, and it seems you're one of the few that is still using it on en.wikipedia. How can we help you transition to the Programs and Events Dashboard? Feel free to contact me through my email: vmasrour AT wikimedia.org VMasrour (WMF) (talk) 22:13, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
@VMasrour (WMF), Athikhun.suw, and Pilarbini: Thanks so much for reaching out to me. We have been using the Programs and Events Dashboard for a period of time. For technical purposes, I do not anticipate a problem. However, I have minor practical questions:
- Do we still have a course tag (article banner) for talk page? The template {{Course assignment}} is "deprecated". The template {{Dashboard.wikiedu.org assignment}} is "missing, inadequate, or does not accurately describe its functionality".
- How do we archive the existing pages on Wikipedia created under the Education Extension?
- What will happen to the instructor/course campus volunteer roles?
- Where shall we put course pages in the future? Wikipedia, the Programs and Events Dashboard, or private LMS for the course?
--Taweetham (talk) 01:48, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
- En.wikipedia has not yet gone through the process to implement templates created by the Dashboard. We hope this will happen further down the road.
- In other Wikis, the creators are making a backup of their pages, which makes sense if you have put work into them. You could move them to a space dedicated to your education program, for instance. As we have mentioned in the notice, the data of your programs will not be lost, and we are working to document a way to display said data.
- On the Dashboard, when you create a program you are automatically its instructor, and you can invite others as instructors on your program by their user names.
- The Dashboard generates a page for each program, in which you can add a description of your course/program.
Once again, i invite you to take a look at https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/training/learning-and-evaluation VMasrour (WMF) (talk) 23:04, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

Your account is currently configured with an education program flag. This system (the Courses system) is being deprecated. As such, your account will soon be updated to remove these no longer supported flags. Problematic editor
User:Bamrsykp is headed for a block for long-term refusal to discuss, but instead repeatedly re-inserting essentially the same combinations of chemical nonsense, redundant content, and poorly written off-topic material. The user's talkpage is full of ignored warnings from you and me. DMacks (talk) 20:53, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
@DMacks, Pilarbini, and Athikhun.suw: Thank you for your patience and your message. It is very sad to see that this user and other users from my class did not follow rules and policies. We are sorry and we will try to do better next term. You may notice that the "byte requirement" was just introduced this term and this is one of many reasons for the problem. For next term, I plan to spend three weeks for the training alone.
- The first for the standard online training.
- The second is for students to learn from failures and bad examples (WP:COPYVIO, WP:NOT, Wikipedia:Edit warring).
- The third is for students to learn from success stories and good examples and find their own topic.
There will be an assessment at the end of the week for all three weeks and students must pass before moving on to the next stage. --Taweetham (talk) 04:22, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, discussion pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at Talk:Flip-flops, is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Don't change your talk page posts after they have been replied to. Meters (talk) 04:10, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

For the five year history: it is to my surprise that lower quality image remains in the article that has rich commons media content. Hello, Taweetham,
Please do not change a redirect to point to a blank page, a non-existent article. After a new article has been created, then the redirect can be changed to point to the new target page. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 21:20, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Liz and Hack: Please help me find a better solution. Citizen's Day was link from List of minor secular observances (for 19 November). It should not link to (white) Australia Day (26 January).
- I am not a big fan of nomination for deletion. However, if it is the case, please "speedy delete" let me know.
- I am not sure if it can turn into a disambiguation page.
- or the item should be remove from List of minor secular observances instead?
Merging "Angstrom Star" into "Angstrom"
Hello. I ran across Angstrom star while rating new Physics articles, and I'm not really convinced it needs a separate article - it's obsolete, there's few references, and it'll never be much more than the dictionary definition it is now. Would you object if I merged it into Angstrom? If you think it should stay put, I'll start an official merge discussion on the talk page. Cheers! PianoDan (talk) 17:37, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- @PianoDan: Please go ahead but leave the redirect pages for the unit. My goal is to have it easily discoverable on Wikipedia. I have added a bit more text and references so that it may fit a (sub)section or a paragraph in the main article. --Taweetham (talk) 06:50, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- Absolutely! Redirects are cheap, after all. PianoDan (talk) 16:46, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- @PianoDan: Redirection into a specific (sub)section with # would be nice. I'll leave the rest to you. Many thanks! --Taweetham (talk) 00:43, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

Precautionary Statement Codes
Can you help making P301+P316 to be 'IF SWALLOWED: Get immediate emergency medical help.' and P316 to be 'Get immediate emergency medical help.' according to this? -- Tanapatjms (talk) 09:25, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- Done @Tanapatjms:. This is not trivial. It is a module data page at Module:GHS_phrases/data. --Taweetham (talk) 10:09, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
