African Association for History Education

The African Association for History Education (AHE-Afrika) is a non-profit organisation with its seat in the Faculty of Education in the University of Pretoria, South Africa. AHE-Afrika was founded in 2015 by its co-directors, Prof Johan Wassermann and Dr Denise Bentrovato, as a pioneering network of History Education professionals from Africa and beyond.

AHE-Afrika contributes to research, policy and practice in the field of History Education in Africa by connecting and supporting History Education professionals and their associations across the continent and beyond, providing a forum for knowledge-sharing, networking and cooperation, building professional capacity, and advocating for high quality and relevant History Education.

AHE-Afrika's main activities include the organisation of international and regional conferences and seminars in cooperation with local institutes for history teacher education (Durban 2015, Kampala 2017, Pretoria 2019, Lusaka 2021); the organisation of professional development workshops for history teachers, the organisation of research projects and publication; advisory work for government institutions, international organisations and NGOs.
