Helpme edit

{{helpme}} I tried editing the "Heroin" page but it it telling me it is an unprotected page. I am a registered user but it still won't let me edit it. I would like to add a section for school related purposes. Thank you!

--Tashap12 (talk) 12:48, 25 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Heroin is protected, yes. While you are a "registered user", you're not yet an "autoconfirmed user." This will happen after 4 days and when you make 10 edits to non-protected pages. At that point you'll be able to edit Heroin directly. In the meantime, if you do want to make changes to Heroin, you can use the {{editsemiprotected}} template on Talk:Heroin, and state what you want to add/change. Note that you actually need to state exactly what you want added or changed, and you need to provide any references necessary to verify those additions. If you have further questions, you can post them here or on my talk page and I'll be happy to help. Qwyrxian (talk) 12:57, 25 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Response to "Qwyrxia" edit

Hello, I received your message in regards to my request to unprotect the "heroin" page. Just to clarify, the only way to add to the existing page is to edit 10 other pages and wait 4 days? There is no other way, as a student and registered user, that I can gain access to adding to the page? This is an assignment for one of my classes at Northeastern University and the entry that I would like to add is already completed. Because time is limited with due dates, it is hard for me to edit 10 other pages in time to complete the assignment. I will post the entry that I have to the Talk:Heroin page, and include the sources with an explanation of the entry. I understand that there are privacy and protection purposes behind this, but if you could please let me know if there is anything else I can do to speed up the process, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. --Tashap12 (talk) 18:03, 25 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

You can request the change by putting {{Edit semi-protected}} at the bottom of the Talk page and then, as you suggest, explaining the change you propose and giving your source. Then someone else. if they agree, will make the change. Your request will still be visible on the talk page to show, for your assignment, that you initiated the change. JohnCD (talk) 18:12, 25 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Take care to be precise about the change you want - where it is to be, which words you want replaced or whether you just want to add words, and exactly what words you want added. It is more likely that someone will do it if they don't have to make too many decisions. JohnCD (talk) 18:46, 25 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I see the request you've made; I'll try to take a look at it when I have more time and mental clarity, but that may not be until tomorrow. Of course, another editor may act on it in the meanwhile. A first glance indicates to me that there may be some problems, but it may be addable, at least in part. One immediate question I have is that you mention pictures--where would these pictures come from? Note that you cannot take them from the books you are referencing, as those pictures would be copyrighted and we rarely use copyrighted pictures in our articles (and these likely wouldn't qualify for the exception). Qwyrxian (talk) 21:25, 25 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Response to "Qwyrxian" edit

These pictures came from this source: Bourgois, P., & Schonberg, J. (2009). Righteous Dopefiend. Berkley: University of California Press. It is an enthnography/book and I now understand that these pictures cannot be used, so I will remove them. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks! --Tashap12 (talk) 00:49, 26 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Note, to contact a user, you don't need to use {{helpme}} - that is for when you want help from any user. I will add a note on the talk page of that user, ie on User_talk:Qwyrxian, so they know you wrote here.  Chzz  ►  23:28, 26 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Tashap12, I left a question on the Talk:Heroin. At this point, that's the best point for us to continue to work so that other editors can be involved, too. Qwyrxian (talk) 03:48, 27 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Response to Qwyrxian edit

Qwyrxian, I have not heard from you in a couple of days. What do you suggest is the next step? Please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you!

--Tashap12 (talk) 01:36, 5 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I completely forgot about this. I just reverted your change to the article as vandalism, which is not really the correct description, sorry. But you basically duplicated part of the article, rather than making changes to existing content. I'll reply on the talk page about where to go from here. Qwyrxian (talk) 03:41, 13 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Response to Qwyrxian edit

Hello, I did not intend on duplicating the content, I just didn't know how else to make changes to the existing article so I entered my entry in (including the existing introduction because I added to it). Sorry for the inconvenience, but will I be allowed to edit still? Thanks

--Tashap12 (talk) 19:10, 13 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

No problem, I took out the duplication. However, on Talk:Heroin, I left an explanation of major changes that need to be made to the suggested addition. The problem is that you've written it like an essay, in that you're giving background information about a related subject. However, on WP, we generally compartmentalize; that means that we keep topics very closely focused. So, everything that is added must be directly about heroin. Any more general info about social theories of addiction should go into a different article (like Substance dependence). Qwyrxian (talk) 00:10, 14 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Additional note: when responding to discussions on article or user talk pages, don't make a new section for every response. Instead, just write your answer below the current one, adding one more colon than the person before you (:) at the beginning of your line. Only start a new section if you're starting a new topic. I refactored ( = reorganized) Talk:Heroin to better organize our conversation there. I'll take a look at your sandbox some time soon. Qwyrxian (talk) 03:15, 14 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Did you by any chance look at my sandbox yet? It seems like the outline has been revised but I can't tell if it has been edited. Thanks! --Tashap12 (talk) 22:53, 17 April 2011 (UTC) I actually realized now that it has been edited. Thank you very much! What do you suggest I do from here? Is there a chance that it can be published? Thanks again. --Tashap12 (talk) 22:58, 17 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Take a look at what I just did to the first section of your sandbox--significantly trimming to make the entry more focused and encyclopedic. Try seeing if you can do a similar editing job on the rest. A shorter, more compact version of this could probably go into the article. I also fixed the refs, although don't worry if you don't know how to do that, as I can fix them later. I may not have time to do more work on this in the next few days, as work is quite busy right now and I have other WP projects I have to keep up as well, but I'll look back at your work again later. Qwyrxian (talk) 00:06, 18 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for all of your help. I will do some more editing within the next 2 days to try and trim it down. The final entry is due by this Thursday, April 21. I would greatly appreciate it if you could look at it before that so I can know where I stand with the entry and if it will be published or not. Also, I noticed that you changed the number in the contents from heading 4 to 1 and was wondering why? Thanks. --Tashap12 (talk) 02:07, 18 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'll do my best. The contents isn't really important; it's because I put everything into a single subheading; exactly how that will look will depend on what's left after editing and also on where this info will go into the article. Qwyrxian (talk) 02:10, 18 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I read through your edits and it sounds a lot better!! Thanks for your help. I don't know what else I should do to condense it without deleting any of the material. Also, how do I create references 3 and 4 at the bottom of the page? --Tashap12 (talk) 05:06, 18 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Does the entry in my sandbox page need to be further edited? Please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks! --Tashap12 (talk) 14:55, 19 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, as I told you above: I edited the first sections down significantly, and you need to do the same with the rest of it (Subculture and Social Control). I haven't looked in detail, but it probably needs to be cut by about 50%. Qwyrxian (talk) 22:28, 19 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Is it possible to just submit the part that you edited to Wikipedia? Thanks. --Tashap12 (talk) 13:11, 21 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have added that part to the article. Let me know when you've worked through the rest so that it can also be added. Qwyrxian (talk) 03:35, 24 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
