When I conclude whose view is right, I just follow it, be it mine, or the other’s. This actually does help me make new friends, when I see that their point is right (because it is me who is wrong most of the time). That’s what my parents and my religion teaches me. Ah! Now, coming to the topic: I just had a small issue... Thought you might be of some help! The problem is that I encountered a French phrase while reading an essay about Louis Pasteur... The sentence read:

“One day, in the Place du Panthéon, seeing a sort of altar labelled ‘Autel de la patrie’, Pasteur placed all his worldly wealth—150 francs.”

Can you please translate the phrase (along with a gloss)? I do not trust machine translations... (And I do not know the ABC of French ☹)

Well, you did not tell me if my previously prescribed technique (here above the line) helped you; Never mind... I just hope you answer this translation request promptly!

• Howdy, Syed. Always glad to meet a fellow teenage editor. We get a bad rap, when, if you ask me, we're half of what's keeping this encyclopedia together!

Anyways... Hmm. Autel was a word I wasn't familiar with; however, Wiktionary defines it as "altar (in a church)", which is consistent with the interlanguage links on d:Q101687 (linking to fr:Autel (religion)), so I think that definition is a valid one. As for patrie... that's a word I've encountered, but it's a difficult one to describe precisely. Essentially, it means homeland or Fatherland, but has different connotations in French. (French patriotism is a very complicated subject.) Notably, it's used in La Marsaillaise: "Allons enfants de la Patrie, / Le jour de gloire est arrivé"—which means (and this is a liberal translation, since the literal one doesn't convey the full meaning) "Let us march, children of this nation, / The day of glory has arrived".

So, essentially, autel de la patrie would mean "altar of the homeland", with a certain subtext of cultural heritage. Hope that makes sense.

And yeah. I suck at maintaining my userspace. I'm a horrible procrastinator, but... it is what it is. Thanks for that helpul explanation! I can atleast know what it meant, now... An advice from a fellow mate: The best solution to the evil of procrastination is to do whatever work you get at its proper time so you do not have the chance of delaying it... Just need a bit of self-control. You should control your habits and desires than letting them control you. I too, had this dreadful habit a couple of years ago. Just took a firm stance against it and now I do not have the fear of facing its dire consequences, I used to have, years ago... Better be immovable by your evils yourself than making your defects irremovable. This is so difficult a thing to do, that in Islam, controlling one’s self is described as the greatest Jihad (here meaning fighting one’s self)... But still, it can be done. The key is to try, try, again and you are bound to succeed. We, young people have got such terrible energies that we can make anything possible. Why not give ot a try? Hope I do not sound like your parents, nagging you.

Yeah, I did a few Google searches and turned up a page on his website; however, it was 404'ed, as was the Google-cached version, so I figured a G11 would suffice. Stupidly, though, I only searched from the opening sentences of the article, which I've found are often the least likely ones to turn up anything in a Google search. Hi Jim. Edit summaries are only so long, and it appears my meaning was stifled. :P To clarify: Yes, obviously when someone chooses to be open about their real-world identity, like you, me, or Qworty, they lose any right to anonymity on Wikipedia. (Barring, to a limited degree, requests to vanish.) Rather, what I took issue with was EEng's invocation of Bob's real-world identity in justifying a ban. It's one thing to say "He's a threat to the site and should be banned", or even "He's a threat to site and can go fuck himself" (uncivil, but not hugely insulting). It's another thing altogether to say "He's a disgrace as an author and as a human being, and here's what I think about his professional career". Normally I'm skeptical when people bring up BLP in regards to Wikipedia contributors, since, of course, we all open ourselves up to a certain degree of criticism when we edit here. However, EEng wasn't talking about Wikipedia, he was talking about real-world things that really shouldn't come into play here. (The real-world-things checklist for Wikipedia editors is selecting "no" for "Are you a pedophile?" and pretty much nothing else.) Was Qworty entitled to any anonmity? No, by his own choice. Was he entitled to the same protections we offer all publicly identified living people? Certainly.

I apologize if any of this seems... strongly-worded. I'm writing much more quickly than I usually do, and I feel that I'm not properly reciprocating the kind tone in your comment. Hi! I would agree with you over here that Indian articles are horrible and better editors are needed. But a smaller admin pool does really adversely affect. And the promotion of the area as highly controversial doesn't help much. There are many other topics too which can be worked on without much fuss. But that doesn't happen do to these poor presentation. If you really wish and have interest in it, i could suggest you some geographical topics like cities, or monuments where you can help. Of course, its upto you.
On a different note, i am now seeing that i have left a message on your talk page before also. I had forgotten about it. I would also want to change the current DYK pattern into NOW (New on Wikipedia). But i can't seem to gather any like minded people. Well, I'm inspired

Thanks for your snarky edit summary at Petroleum County. As the reviewer you just attacked, I'd like to point out that the DYK criteria has no requirement for sparkling prose, you seem to be confusing it with the GA criteria. I held that article for weeks to get stuff sourced. I'm so inspired to submit my own articles to DYK if the QPQ is this much of a minefield. Montanabw^(talk) 18:55, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Call me a purist, but I don't think we should be putting anything on the main page with that bad a lede. Especially when you consider that the problematic sentence was the one explaining the fact used in the DYK hook. Now, mind you, I've never worked on DYK; I'm just your average Wikipedian who reads the main page from time to time, and in this case found the hook interesting. If there's nothing in the DYK criteria requiring competently written sentences (not "sparkling prose", just a basic standard of readability), then, if you ask me, that's a bug, not a feature.

I'm sorry that I've offended you, but bad writing linked from the main page is bad for Wikipedia. It makes us look unprofessional. It would've taken you less than a minute to fix the writing there. I don't deny that you helped make the encyclopedia better by adding sources and expanding the article, but I don't think a quick copyedit would've been too much to ask. — PinkAmpers&^{(Je vous invite à me parler)} 03:07, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

I appreciate your honesty about being an "average wikipedian" and encourage you to do some DYK reviews. In my case, I've created over 160 articles and nominated or co-nomed about 30 DYKs, all of which required myself or the co-nominator to review someone else's. I also have multiple GA and FA-class articles, so I've been there and done all that. This article's lead had issues, sure, but none serious enough to deny a DYK nod. Once on the main page, several others (possibly including yourself?) quickly made further improvements. If you don't review DYKs, then you don't understand the reviewer's role. For one thing, we ourselves are usually in the middle of our OWN DYK assessment at the same time. In my case, I also had two FACs and was doing a peer review, on top of the 3000+ articles on my watchlist, of which 40 or 50 a day have edits that need to be checked. The reviewer asks the nominating editors to fix things, and if they don't, it slows down approval. This article had languished for a couple of weeks. I actually HAD already fixed several minor things on that article, which is not even the reviewer's job -- if a reviewer does too much rewriting personally, they are no longer a reviewer, they are in "involved" editor and thus someone ELSE has to come in and complete the review, which slows things down more. (The DYK promoter also promoted the wrong hook with the worst grammar, which also irritated me but was beyond my control) I asked the editors to do some cleanup and they did quite a bit, actually. But then, I think they started to feel discouraged, so myself and another editor stepped in to hit the last few obvious barriers to DYK approval. I skirted pretty close to the edge of involved as it was. It isn't the reviewer's job to rewrite an article for people, and I made a judgement call about promoting it with my minor involvement when the editors got discouraged about what I was asking of them. Template request

The general response: I'm generally quite uncomfortable about leaving high visibility templates unprotected - yes, it's "only" 800 transclusions, but those 800 cover every article on a major language, several of which have four-figure daily readership! I'd love it if we had a better approach to this problem, but we don't; if someone is deliberately trying to do complex vandalism, semiprotection is a bit of a thin guard.

Hi Salvio. I'm very sorry about that. I've had something of a bad day, but that's not really an excuse, and I absolutely know better. I might ask, though, why you removed my comment; surely an inappropriate edit summary (which I agree it was) doesn't warrant the removal of the comment that it accompanied? I suppose removing my comment wouldn't be an unfair punishment, but I do think it's kind of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I tried to present a legitimate challenge to a statement of Kiefer's that I felt was intentionally misrepresenting an alleged conversation; if there's any way you think I could rephrase it to make it clear that I'm just trying to refute his point (i.e., that I'm not trying to stir up trouble needlessly), I'd love to hear it. • I've already said I agree that the edit summary was inappropriate, Kiefer. I do apologize for my incivility toward you. Impolite disagreements far outnumber polite ones here these days, and I very much regret that I've contributed to that trend; I should have been able to express my objections without attacking your character.
• @Salvio: Oh, okay. Lucky for you, then, that you're talking to perhaps the only member of the community who's perfectly fine with the "We can't talk about why we did it, and we can't talk about why we can't talk about it" line. Thanks for clearing that up. Don't worry, I shan't speak of it again. That said, if the reason it was removed had anything to do with the privacy or dignity of another user, I feel like shit, and I guess that's yet another thing I have to apologize for; please pass on my apologies if that is the case.
• Respectfully, I don't think I crossed a line in accusing him of intentionally misrepresenting evidence. He made a very serious allegation about something Ironholds had said, and I think I was able to provide a strong argument that it would be impossible for him to have read the logs in question and to have honestly drawn that conclusion. Isn't that the whole point of "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence"? I mean, if someone deliberately takes something someone else said out of context, and uses it as the backing for what would otherwise be considered a gross personal attack, doesn't another user have the right to call it what it is?
• As I said above, I'm perfectly willing to abide by your decision to remove my comment, but might I request that the relevant section in Kiefer's evidence be removed as well? If you need a more in-depth explanation of why I think it's a misrepresentation, I'll happily email the Committee.

Hi there; I suspect that you are talking about an e-mail purporting to have come from me asking for a loan to get me back home from Manila. My contact list was recently hacked, and that message sent to, as far as I can determine, every person on my contact list. you were there because of our interaction some long time ago. It does not otherwise relate to, or impinge on, Wikipedia. This is a fairly common scam, and I am aware of two other people who have told me (verbally) of the same thing happening to them. I did read your oppose, and I've just read it again. Unfortunately, simply referring to "unpleasant interactions" does not help me evaluate your oppose, since I don't know what these interactions even are, which leaves me with only the April Fool's deletion requests. Additionally, if that is the most notable example of him unpleasantly interacting with you, then I must conclude that all the other examples of behavior are even more minor. I'm actually not quite sure what popup users are. I'm mainly asking because, well, it's always good to find out about these things if you're going to write a Tech report, because there are some quiet weeks, and those weeks are good times to cover lesser-known features, or how to cater for any special user needs. Article Feedback Tool update

Hey PinkAmpersand. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

(What is...) Well, it looks silly when you put it that way. ;) I assume you're referring to my use of "do as I say, not as I do"? Yeah, probably something I should avoid. Normally I try to keep my cool in discussions like this. Sometimes I fail. I'd happily accept a wiki where losing your cool could get you in trouble. If I had any serious reason to fear that, I would just not edit when I'm in a bad mood. (To be clear, my mood's not influencing my points... just the way I express them.) So yes, I do acknowledge that I'm breaking my own proposed rule, but I think my point stands. (Seriously, though, thank you for pointing that out to me. @Demon Cat: Oh, hi. It just means that I clicked a button saying that your userpage isn't vandalism, spam, or otherwise problematic. Anyone who's been here for more than four days, and has made more than 10 edits, can do this for new pages (that they haven't created themselves). You'll get notifications like that any time a page you create is patrolled; this matters more for articles than for pages in your userspace. If you don't care, you can turn off the option in your preferences. I was only looking at your userpage, by the way, because I was catching up on the matter you posted about on AN/I. I'm sorry that you had an unfriendly welcome here, and I assure you the community will deal with that user if they continue to be a problem. Interwiki-links in lists of botanists by author abbreviation

I think adding these links where there is no English Wikipedia article is a good idea. However, it's a hassle when you do this by using different "ill" templates. The reason is that these lists tend to get disorganized: editors don't add stuff in alphabetic order; they don't correctly use en-dashes rather than hyphens; where there is an English article, it doesn't have the {{botanist}} template when it should. So I have some off-line tools that I use every now and then to go through the lists and fix these issues. It's much harder to parse the lists now that they are littered with different "ill" templates. Can I suggest that you stick to "ill-WD"? Peter coxhead (talk) 13:16, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

I agree that the different {{ill}} templates are annoying. Ideally, we'd be able to have one Lua-based template that does it all, where you'd just punch in a Q# and it would return the links in the proper syntax, and if there are too many (the cutoff would probably be 4 or 5), it would link to Wikidata instead. Instead, we've got the current situation where we have to pick templates as the circumstances require, which can definitely be quite awkward (especially because {{ill2}} is a pretty ugly template). When I created {{ill-WD}}, I intended it for cases where there were more than three or four links, but that's just my personal preference; from checking the transclusions from time to time, I know that User:Alex Bakharev likes to use it even when there's only one link, which I certainly have no objection to... It all comes down to editorial discretion, and what is felt to be in the reader's best interest. Which is all a roundabout way of saying that if you feel the readers are best off with us only using one template, then sure, let's discuss this. The way I see it, we have a trade-off between a somewhat more straightforward template (if I may so toot my own horn), and making our readers take an extra click for something that may not reward them ("Oh, 'other languages'? I wonder if they have something in <my obscure language>. Nope. Well, that was a waste of a click."). And then there's the matter of your cleanup programs. I hope you don't mind my opining that that should be a secondary concern (putting the reader first and all that jazz), but I do understand the difficulties the multiple templates create.

(As an aside, I'm not at all sure that the other language links are much use to readers – my strong impression is that the overwhelming majority of readers of the English Wikipedia are monolingual (most are American after all!). Ah. It's fine, happens. I've found that the "save" button is very... sticky. Basically even if you tap it for a second and press "stop" on your browser immediately, the edit winds up going through. Which is good, I suppose, since the alternative would be losing more edits. Personally, I check my contributions fairly frequently, just because the "(current)" feature is an easy way to look out for cases where someone might have had a problem with my edits, or replied to me in a conversation; I find this much easier than using my watchlist. — PinkAmpers&^{(Je vous invite à me parler)} 08:58, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

"ill" templates in taxoboxes

Adding an "ill" template to a line in the relevant List of botanists pages is, as I've already said, useful and you've given editors a chance to comment. Adding such links to taxoboxes is, I think, a different issue and should be raised in a number of places first, at the least at WP:TOL, WP:PLANTS and WP:ANIMALS, since potentially a very large number of articles could have such templates added. GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation

article was speedily deleted?

I copied part of an American interState Govt website, thinking (correctly) that it was in the public domain, but it was speedily deleted recently. Your username is attached to the deletion on my talk page. (Mang (talk) 22:25, 19 January 2014 (UTC)) I believe that the article should exist, even if without the contentious content. Can you help me recover the article? If need be, i can selectively eliminate parts that are proven infringing.

@Namangwari: Well, as to the copyright, could you please provide a link from the website stating that its content is in the public domain? I don't believe that the works of interstate compacts are considered public domain by default (since they're not run by the federal government).

If that content isn't in the public domain, then yes, there's the option of restoring the article without the text you copied. Though I'd note that the only other text in the article had been copied from the probation article, so, if you want the article restored, you really should write something original. (I don't know if there's explicitly a policy on that, but consider it my strong advice as a fellow editor.)

If that content is in the public domain, then the article can probably be restored; however, something a little odd happened here. While I nominated the page for deletion under speedy deletion criterion G12 (copyright infringement), it was deleted under criterion G10 (attack page or negative unsourced BLP) by the responding administator, User:Bbb23. Bbb is a very good administrator, so instead of trying to guess his reasoning there, I'll just invite him to do so himself.

Anyways, Bbb is the one with whom you'll want to clear up the G12/G10 issues. I'm not an admin, so I couldn't restore the article if I wanted to. Hope this helps. — PinkAmpers&^{(Je vous invite à me parler)} 22:44, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

GOCE July drive and August blitz

Guild of Copy Editors July 2014 backlog elimination drive wrap-up Participation: Thanks to everyone who participated in the July drive. December 2014 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2014 Newsletter Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. Together with tag removals from articles unsuitable for copy editing, we eliminated July 2013 from the backlog and reduced August and September's tags to 61 and 70 respectively. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone! Blitz: The December Blitz will run from December 14–20 and will focus on articles related to Religion, in recognition of this month's religious holidays in much of the English-speaking world. Awards will be given out to everyone who copy edits at least one of the target articles. Sign up here!
