Announcement

edit

Hello! I'm The Arbiter, one of the coordinators for WikiProject Zoo. I am proud to announce the launch of a new portal: Portal:Zoos and Aquariums! ZooPro, ZooFari, and I worked hard to create a new portal for information on zoos, aquariums, and the associated projects and articles on Wikipedia. If you could head on over, take a look at our work, and maybe learn some more about zoos and Wikiproject Zoo, it would be great! Cheers and Happy Editing!

WP Zoo Collaboration

edit

After thinking a bit, I can suggest two pages to start. Cincinnati Zoo was demoted from B to C because one editor refused to follow WP rules and would not cite properly and continued to write like a travelogue. There is plenty of material and some citations for reference if you go back to before he was reverted, but everything needs to be verified and rewritten. The other is Memphis Zoo, which is almost a B but includes a long list instead of a history narrative and most of the photos are animal closeups and don't contribute to information about the zoo. The nomination process seems to be a bit clunky, but I've not been through this yet so maybe there is a good reason. I guess it makes sense if you assume that this is to bring more people into the collaboration, but I guess I've always been more of a "step in and help where necessary" kind of editor. I can make a nomination and see what happens if you want. Don Lammers (talk) 01:33, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi. When you recently edited San Diego Zoo Safari Park, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Bongo and Python (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

I see that you did some major contributions to Memphis Zoo as part of the Wikipedia Zoo Project. The article looks great and I am wondering when another zoo will be nominated? Any ideas? --Morning277 (talk) 19:36, 25 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Monterey Bay Aquarium

edit

I am going through Zoo categories, and noticed a copy of this article in your user space. It's old (I've done some work on the article), so be careful when you go to return text. The article still needs work, mostly with citations (personally I don't think it qualifies as B-class yet, but I'm not going to demote it). I disabled the categories in the article in your user space so that this version doesn't show up in category pages. Don Lammers (talk) 15:22, 17 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Gigantic

edit

Hi, thanks for message. The article was tagged by another user for lack of notability and spamming, and I concurred. I deleted your article because

  • it did not provide adequate independent verifiable sources to enable us to verify the facts and show that it meets the notability guidelines. Although you gave some references, they were only to descriptions of the game or its release details, not to support a claim of notability
  • I can't see that there is any claim of notability anyway in terms of dowmloads, awards etc; This is unsurprising given that it is not yet released. It may become notable, but obviously isn't yet
  • Articles must be neutral and encyclopaedic. You describe the game and give release date, but no other facts. It seems a clear attempt to promote the game ahead of its release, and you have an obvious conflict of interest when it comes to editing articles about this subject.

I've seen worse, so I'll restore here shortly for you to work on Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:48, 1 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for putting the page in my userspace. I think I understand that I did not establish notability because I only described gameplay. Would adding a section on reliable sources' opinions of its notability be sufficient? (One of the IGN articles called it a "unique MOBA", so it's different from all other games in its genre.)
Also, I do not understand why you think I have a conflict of interest. What do you mean by "articles about this subject"? Is "this subject" video games in general or this game in particular?
P.S. Now that I've checked WikiProject Video Games' list of reliable sources, I see that the third-party source for one reference (mmorpg.com) had undetermined reliability. Takinzinnia (talkcontribs) 08:42, 1 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
I've now read the relevant policies and believe the article should not have been speedily deleted in the first place. (Perhaps it could have been subject to a regular deletion discussion or a discussion on notability).
Regarding WP:G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion
  • The criterion states, "An article which describes its subject from a neutral point of view does not qualify for this criterion." The article was entirely a neutral description of gameplay and a development timeline free of a second-person perspective, extraordinary claims, and puffery (no inclusion of such terms as "influential, famous, highly-anticipated," etc.)/vague or unsupported claims of notability (the fact it was covered in detail in at least one reliable source itself shows notability, per the collapsed box below).
  • In addition, I do not see how a neutral POV description of an upcoming game is "unambiguous advertising or promotion." Just because the game is not out yet does not automatically mean an article describing it is promotional or unambiguous advertising. WP:NOTADVERTISING part 5 "Advertising, marketing, or public relations" is not violated: The article was written with no regards to aesthetics, "fun factor", "highly-anticipated"-ness, etc. per WP:SUBJECTIVE and WP:PEACOCK/puffery.
Regarding WP:A7: No indication of importance (individuals, animals, organizations, web content, events)
  • It is stated, "This criterion applies only to articles about web content and to articles about people, organizations, and individual animals themselves, not to articles about their books, albums, software, or other creative works" (emphasis added). The page was not about an organization (Motiga Games), only about its software, which is a specific exception to this criterion.
Discussion on notability related to G11
I should first say that unsupported claims of notability or a lack of a WP:Credible claim of significance are not by themselves criteria for speedy deletion for articles about software.
Although notability may not have been clearly established, according to WP:NRVE, "Notability requires only the existence of suitable independent, reliable sources, not their immediate citation. Wikipedia articles are not a final draft, and an article's subject can be notable if such sources exist, even if they have not been named yet. However, once an article's notability has been challenged, merely asserting that unspecified sources exist is seldom persuasive..." I have found an additional article from a reliable source per WP:WikiProject Video games/Sources#General: New free-to-play action game Gigantic lumbers onto PC in 2015, so I don't think the page should have been speedily deleted just because I cited only one reliable source, IGN.
Regarding the other notability guidelines:
  • "Significant coverage addresses the topic directly and in detail, so that no original research is needed to extract the content..." The cited articles that IGN (the article's main source) wrote were solely about this game and in detail, so the game was addressed "directly and in detail". As far as I can tell, significant in this context means the subject is the primary topic in a reference, not that there are many references about it.
  • "Reliable means sources need editorial integrity to allow verifiable evaluation of notability, per the reliable source guideline." IGN is reliable per WP:WikiProject Video games/Sources#General.
  • "Sources should be secondary sources, as those provide the most objective evidence of notability. There is no fixed number of sources required since sources vary in quality and depth of coverage, but multiple sources are generally expected..." I do admit the article only had one reliable secondary/third-party source, and perhaps a "general expectation" of more than one cited reliable source would warrant a deletion discussion, but I don't think it supports speedy deletion. Although the policy does state "It is common for multiple newspapers or journals to publish the same story, sometimes with minor alterations or different headlines, but one story does not constitute multiple works. Several journals simultaneously publishing different articles does not always constitute multiple works, especially when the authors are relying on the same sources, and merely restating the same information...", the articles I cited from the reliable source were half a year apart.
  • "Independent of the subject excludes works produced by the article's subject or someone affiliated with it. For example, advertising, press releases, autobiographies, and the subject's website are not considered independent." IGN is a reliable and secondary source. The only time I cited the game's/development company's websites, it was to source claims about the development timeline, which should be appropriate per WP:PRIMARY ("A primary source may only be used on Wikipedia to make straightforward, descriptive statements of facts that can be verified by any educated person with access to the primary source but without further, specialized knowledge").
  • "Presumed means that significant coverage in reliable sources creates an assumption, not a guarantee, that a subject should be included. A more in-depth discussion might conclude that the topic actually should not have a stand-alone article—perhaps because it violates what Wikipedia is not, particularly the rule that Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information." This is the discussion we are having right now.
Finally, I am curious why you believe I have a WP:Conflict of interest.
I would appreciate if we could continue this discussion. Takinzinnia (talkcontribs) 20:06, 1 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • I am happy to withdraw the claim of COI. Usually unreleased games are puffed by the company, but I can see no evidence that that is the case here
  • You are correct that software cannot be speedied on notability alone. Whether a game can be considered just as software is arguable, but in any case it's irrelevant here. Any article can be tagged as advertising, and it's then appropriate to identify other issues, such as lack of notability, not in English, unsourced BLP etc, so I think the editor who tagged the article acted correctly
  • An article which consists only of a game description and release details looks spammy to me.

You can recreate at any time, but I strongly suggest that you first expand the article and explain how an unreleased game meets the notability criteria. In its current state, even if not speedied it is likely to end up deleted on notability via a prod or AFD. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:45, 24 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Jimfbleak. I see that you go through tons of speedy deletion candidates, so it's understandable there'd be a false positive every once in a while. I do agree that the game's notability is rather borderline, so I'll need to find more coverage at some point. I'll expand the article with what I find and then recreate it within a few months. Hey Takinzinnia, not 100% how these wiki messages works so I'm doing it here. Just in reply to your comment about game of thrones on PS3.
