Railways

Thanks for the note. I do remember doing the edit, but I can't remember why I didnt complete at the time. Maybe I got distracted or maybe I found some non standard cases on page B and couldnt figure it out. I can run a script to do an auto conversion, but it's probably worth getting the template right first (ie extending out for all the possible optional information). I'm not a great template expert but I think there's some kind of { { if } } tag to help do this. Have you seen Wikipedia talk:Bots/Requests for approval. People are trying to stop me create articles. I should be free to create manually if the topic is encyclopedic. If I am not free to use subst:pagename and create then i waste my time here and will leave wikipedia. There are references to Artur Balder as writer in the most important Spanish media. I list some of them:

National Railway Museum

Hi Simon, your edit profile and images are evidence of your suitability to help the NRM and I have come across you virtually a number of times. I have met 3 NRM staff who want to work with us and two (3?) of them just need some assistance. We plan to hold a meeting there around June 22 which we would like you to attend as well, but we'd hope that we had started to assist them by then. As you are close then can I suggest that I put you in immediate contact with our lead person inside the building. If you could "adopt them" and look over their edits then I think they will make a useful contribution and I'm sure you will get an inside track on this interesting work. They intend to write a lot of articles about railway based paintings, but the first hurdle is for them to learn how to edit. Wikimedia UK (Who raise money and pay for Wikipedia etc~) are enthusiastic about the NRM and we really appreciate your offer of help. Do write on my talk page if you need any assistance to make this work. We would expect to pay reasonable for instance. York meetup

Hi. I'm still on for the Punchbowl this evening, but how do I know who is a Wikipedian/Wikimedian and who isn't? Are we in a private room or will there be some obvious sign, like a banner or WP teeshirts. Or will I have to ask around or what? Hmm. Bare minimum wasn't satisfactory, I'm afraid. I arrived at the Punchbowl a minute or two after 7pm. The pub was quite busy. I bought a pint and wandered around, trying to work out who might be Wikipedians and who not. I approached a few likely-looking groups ("Excuse me, I'm supposed to be meeting a few people here, but I don't know what they look like - are you expecting anyone to join you?") but the answer was always no. Nobody accosted me. I assumed that you'd all be sitting at a table, but none of the tables looked very likely. I even looked out for purple tops, but I'm slightly colour-blind and can't easily distinguish purple from blue. Anyway, by 7.20 I'd finished my pint and was feeling fed up so I went home. My journey wasn't entirely wasted, as I needed to pick up some rail tickets at the station (and I try not to drink too much beer for waistline reasons), but wandering around in pubs feeling embarrassed and accosting people isn't really my thing - and they might even have thought that I was up to no good.

The above is partly my fault, as I should have contacted you and other attendees a lot earlier than this afternoon, but still ....

More constructively, and FWIW, my thoughts on the matter are:

• Choose a pub with a meeting-room, or a smaller pub
• If that isn't possible/convenient, exchange photos (mine can be found at Wikipedia:Online_Ambassadors/Mentors) and say in advance what you're wearing
• Perhaps print off individual name-badges in some common format and wear them
• Or wear some unusual article of clothing, or carry an unusual object, again notified in advance

You'll have a very long wait, then. It wasn't you who was failing to assume good faith; my comment in that thread was not directed at you. There's also something comic about you being sooo upset over an accusation of lack of good faith in a thread you started, but so casual in deploying the same assertion here. Blair Peach

I agree with you about the place Peach was attacked as being worth geocoding as a significant location, but I don't think it is right to put it in the title area as "his" location; being attacked was not the only significant event in his life; even if you regard his death as the most significant, you have a choice of locations -- place of attack, place of death, place of burial... • Intercity 2225 is the train name, not the trainset (as it's in UK). Intercity was a class of medium distance links, 2225/6 was the service between Verona and Bologna at the time (even number for the northeast-to-southwest connection, odd for vice-versa)
• Both those claims were taken from the articles linked there (note n. 5). Those are two articles following the Bologna University study about psycho support to victims and rescuers. I add links to an online copy
• Just a few days after, so 2005
• Well, this is a point of significance at the time, and a well known issue. Not just my opinion of course. Railway network was slowly being upgraded, and this accident came to be an example of the need of a faster and more comprehensive approach. This statement was present, in different forms, in both the union's claims and in the official inquiry response.
• I'm an experienced wiki editor (it.wiki mostly) but never managed to learn how to properly use those cite ref things. I had a custom interface add-on working on it.wiki but broke after the GUI change.

• Numbers as words rather than numbers - Seventy-one rather than 71
• Times - 11:10 not 11.10
• Plurals - severe damages -> severe damage

I noticed the discussion about tagging roads related articles and although the proposal thats been put forward by Rschen isn't a perfect one it seems like an ok compromise. I noticed you didn't support or oppose it so I was wondering if you had any opinions about that disussion. M5 coordinates

Hi User:Tagishsimon,

I have undone most of the coordinates that you entered into the M5 article. I appreciate the work that you put into it, but may I refer you to the discussion at WP:RJL regarding coordinates. Basically the roads group have not come to a consensus regarding the way in which coordinatesd could be incoprorated into into road junction lists. However two points did come out of the discussions:

1. There should not be a separate column for cooridinates. There was no consensus as to how they should be displayed, but the style in the M5 article (as restored by me) recevied favourable mention.
2. The number of coordinates in a list should be limited. A maximum of 10 was suggested.

I have taken what I consider to be the most important coordinats that you catalogued and worked them into the text.

Okay, if I'm not mistaken The Anomebot tagged them in April. It's December. The last edit prior to the edit war was by Leitmotiv in April. If you had read the original discussion, you would know that the original state of the cave infobox is no coordinates! So really, it is Pigsonthewing who is jumping the gun, and not vice versa as you put it. Please, review your edits under this new information please. Thank you. As I said, the meta-discussion is whether or not caves should have coords or not. Coords in the infobox is an implementation detail; many caves have coords but no infobox, for example. I understand that you would prefer I reverted to your preferred version, but you'll forgive me if I dissent on this occasion. Fortunately, my experience has been that most editors understand I mean to make Wikipedia better on topics where I have a potential COI; unfortunately, Orangemike is exactly the opposite. Having problems with another editor

Hello there, Tagishsimon. You'd recently offered to help if I ran into trouble over my (I always intend) rule-following COI work, and I'm sorry to have to ask for your input already. I'm afraid this is the most concise, clear explanation I can give:

• Recently, I researched and wrote a draft for a relatively modest new article about a 45-year-old trade association, the Association of Global Automakers, on their behalf, and began my engagement disclosed as such.

• Because there was no article at the time, hence no Talk page to begin this outreach, I took it to WikiProject Automobiles on November 21, where I received feedback from two editors (User:Charles01 and User:Mr.choppers), whose advice I incorporated to the extent I was able. Although Mr.choppers expressed some dissatisfaction with my effort, he also agreed it passed WP:NOTE and said he would have no further comment.

• Assuming this was good enough, on December 21, I moved the article from my userspace into the mainspace, left a note of disclosure with a link back to the WikiProject Autos discussion, and figured that was it.

• The next day, another member of WikiProject Autos (User:Jenova20) added 4 warning tags to the article, which currently remain. I asked him for a better explanation of the warnings, and presented my view as to why they weren't necessary, first on his page and then on the Global Automakers Talk page. I let the matter go over Christmas weekend, but Jenova20 has not been active since December 23.

• On December 28, the Global Automakers discussion page attracted the attention of two different editors, User:Biker Biker and User:Scheinwerfermann. Biker Biker at least made some edits to the article, but hasn't said what would need to be fixed in order to for the tags to be resolved.

• Scheinwerfermann is a bit of a different story: he has spent a lot of time lecturing me in general terms about COI and his unspecified disapproval of the article, but I think by now it's very clear he doesn't want to help make the article better, he just wants to frustrate my efforts. Although I've remained as carefully polite as he has not, I am just about done assuming good faith on his part. (He's even just deleted a friendly reply from me on his Talk page, so I am further vexed.) Looking at his edit history, it seems that his general M.O. includes willful rudeness even toward longtime editors. I wouldn't say he's threatening me per se, but it seems like he's going in that direction.

• Scheinwerfermann aside, my principal frustration is that I have asked multiple editors for addressable feedback, and nothing has recently been forthcoming. At WikiProject Automobiles, I fielded some suggestions from Mr.choppers about what sort of critical information should be included; for the handful of suggestions, I found no third-party sources, and sought to show my work. No one else has offered anything concrete, and my requests have been met with accusations of rushing.

• For your convenience, the two most important threads are Association of Global Automakers, proposed article review request at WikiProject Automobiles and Bias tags on the Global Automakers discussion page. They are getting a bit long, but they're at least fairly self-contained.

At this point, I think the only way forward is to bring in new perspectives. You came to mind first, but I'm not trying to forum-shop, merely to widen this discussion to include some fair-minded, solution-oriented editors. I would understand if you didn't want to get involved personally, but I really could use some outside advice on how to proceed. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Peak Star Party page

Hi again,

just thought - this may need another page describing what PDDS is - it isn't a local astro society but a regional charity incorporating about 8 societies in the region with support from the Peak District National Park Authority and Nottingham Trent University. We haven't registered with the Charities Commission yet but have met all the criteria (turnover, etc.) and will do so as soon as we have agreed the Trustees and the final remit, etc. We also need to formalise the links we are building with Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham and Keele Universities to really get the education side of things fully supported.

I was planning on getting all of this sorted out before adding to Wikipedia but can sort out at least an outline page early on if necessary.

Saw your note about kml files for items such as highways. I guess the good thing about a single point of data is that many online maps can place that point. In that way, depending on the map, you could tell if a lighthouse was near water, if Stonehenge is on a hill, or what kind of soil lies under the leaning tower of Pisa. What seems more important is a common interface to maps than having the "best" solution for a wikipedia page. Re:Yeates co-ordinates

Hi, I was told at the FAC that it needs a couple of tweaks, notably using en-dash to separate Home and 44, and also to ensure the table is accessible using row and col scopes. I read through MOS:DTT, but because of the software I use it's a bit problematic. If you can sort it out then by all means pop it back in as I do think it's a useful thing to have. Well, I've had problems with this in several other articles I have written on the Rhodesian Bush War and people involved in it. The description I gave above, which you quoted, is more or less what I have settled on as a neutral description of it in several other articles. I am sure you will agree it is more neutral than the alternatives I have seen other editors produce, which typically include numerous misspellings, refer to the guerrillas as "freedom fighters" and to the Rhodesian government as an "apartheid-style régime", or similar. That may be the point of view of some people, but it is not neutral by any stretch of the imagination. "Guerrillas" is a neutral term, the fighters in question did profess communist ideologies (I will expand on this later), and their aim was to overthrow the government and introduce majority rule by force: whether or not they were justified in doing so is another matter, but even if you agree with their attempting to do so you cannot deny that it was a forcible act, and they were attempting to topple the incumbent administration. If the war was truly only about universal suffrage, then it is a mystery why it continued for a year after fully-inclusive elections were held in 1979 following the Internal Settlement between the government and non-combatant nationalist parties (albeit, in practice, the elections were largely segregated: those who qualified on the pre-1979 "A" roll, which was almost entirely white, voted separately. However, including all races the election drew a turnout of about 65% if my memory serves. Because ZANU and ZAPU boycotted it the UN damned it as a "sham").

I said earlier I would come back to the communist ideologies of the two militant parties, so here we are. I am surprised that the Wikipedia articles on ZANLA, ZANU, ZIPRA and ZAPU do not mention communism, as both of the parties were Marxist by their own account (Chinese-aligned in the case of ZANU–ZANLA, and Warsaw Pact in the case of ZAPU–ZIPRA). They both announced their intention to form a one-party communist state on their respective foundations in the early 1960s (ZANU coming later, as it was originally a splinter group from ZAPU). I have given one of ZANU's "chimurenga war communiqués" as a reference in quite a few places, including here; the document starts by describing the war as a "revolutionary drive to eliminate settler oppression, imperialism and capitalism" and continues in a similar vein. Both ZANLA and ZIPRA cadres were trained on extended courses in the USSR, China, North Korea, Cuba and so on, and particularly in ZIPRA's case actually had Warsaw Pact advisors with them in Zambia, training a conventional-style army for a potential invasion (which never happened). ZANLA's cap badge was a red star, while ZIPRA's was the hammer and sickle. Interestingly, even though modern Zimbabwe has moved away from this path somewhat, it retains the term "comrade" as a legacy of the war: "comrade" was the term of address for guerrilla fighters from both ZANLA and ZIPRA whilst in the field, as well as the title given to members of each party. When they attended political conferences and so forth, they did so as "Cde. Robert Mugabe", "Cde. Enos Nkala" and so forth (see Geneva Conference (1976), for example). The governing ZANU–PF party (which was created by ZANU absorbing the weakened ZAPU in 1987) actually still retains "comrade" as the honorary prefix for each of its members. At election time the posters still order ask you to vote for "Cde. Robert Mugabe".

In short, I don't think the description of the war which is presently given is unfair. The guerrilla armies were communist-backed, communist-trained and advertised the fact that they were communists themselves. I think if we were viewing the war through Coey's eyes the description would be far more extreme: for a start it would refer to the fighters as "terrorists", not guerrillas. —Cliftonian (talk) 22:36, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject invite

Hi there, Tagishsimon—it's been a little while since I said hello, and thanks again for your help recently. Not sure if you've seen Cracker Barrel lately, but it's much better: a few independent editors helped to rescue it, and I worked with them to bring it to GA status. Alas, Global Automakers remains in disarray, tagged, and now abandoned; one of these days I'll get back to it, but for now I've moved on to other projects.

Anyhow, the real reason I'm writing is invite you (again, I just noticed you were invited early on) to WikiProject Cooperation. These are the folks who helped with Cracker Barrel, and the whole concept is to provide a safe harbor for COI editors to make requests and propose changes—like COI/N, but without the presumption of guilt, one might say.
