AHL hockey edit

I see you added that the Quebec Aces became the Richmond Robins. Do you know any of other franchise changes in the AHL? Do you know if the Virginia Wings of the AHL, are connected with the Tidewater Sharks from the Southern Hockey League or the Adirondack Red Wings of the AHL? Sqwerty 19:41, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I remember that the Virginia Wings became the Adirondack Red Wings based in Glens Falls, NY. around 1980 or 81. Remember, the AHL is the top minor league in hockey, Class AAA, if you will. It has always been this way. The SPHL is probably the equivalent of a Class A league, lower in class than the ECHL and Central League which re "AA" in class. I remember the AHL in the glory days before the 1967 expansion. What a league! The Amerks from '65-'68 were probably the fourth, yes I said fourth best team in all of pro hockey. I feel very fortunate to have seen this great team. Also, the company I worked for sold the team their uniforms and equipment. I know Don Cherry! No kidding! TGProctor

I know Don Cherry as well.. but while he was coaching the Mississauga IceDogs. Do you have any other information about the Wings? I know that the Tidewater/Virgina Wings played from 1971-1975, and the Adirondack Red Wings played from 1979-1999. What happened between 1975 & 1979? I'm trying to research this. Hi Sqwerty, The only thing I can think of is that the Detriot Red Wings transferred their players to the old Central Hockey League. That league played until 1984 went it went out of business. There is a Kansas City Red Wings CHL team that played from 1977-79 but that still leaves two seasons unaccounted for ('75-'76 and '76-'77). Hope this helps. TGP
