Getting started edit

1. TABLE: Still not sure, if I want to have one table (like SR) or have more. For now and to stop dithering, I will go with one. Can change if needed. Am thinking the fields will be:

  • Family (sort)
  • Scientific name (sort)
  • Common name (sort)
  • Range (cute maps)
  • Conservation status
  • Image
  • Refs (covering range and conserv status, if needed, put in other columns, although tricky for range...)

2. Range maps. Want a little cutout of the state (no details on the outside the state, just white space). Thinking to use some kind of base that has the counties on it and (maybe) the rivers. Having those indicators as keys will allow specifying ranges based on them as sort of coordinates. We paint the range in and the "turn off" the layers that are the rivers and counties.

  • Will FS actually make all these maps for me? (best) If not, can he set me up with a base and teach me the drawing program? (worse)
  • Sources: I will have to work on that, species by species. Hoping TX has a county incidence map, but it will really be something I figure out as I go. (where the sources are).
  • Thinking 200px width. Same as images.

3. Text content.

A. Species/families

  • what species in/out, maybe compared to overall order and perhaps to those in rest of US.
  • perhaps a graphic that would be a colored in taxomony diagram.

B. Conservation: A lot like how SR was done, except I may want to go more into state ratings. Or perhaps use them instead of IUCN in table, or do both...but then drives a second table.

C. Capture regulations (hunting)

D. Culture: any sports or festivals (big statues?)

F. Naming (any named after state or features of the state?)

G. Range: Discuss the geography and corresponding basis of the reptiles. Show the precip map. Talk about aquatic or not (categorize?)

H. Lead image: collage, unless I get a better idea. Show a sea turtle, land turtle, aquatic, and terrapin

Yes to all of the above; the structure is right and I can see the content is coming along. Sorry I've taken this long to get to you, and I know you're on a wikibreak until May, but I have this page watchlisted now, so I'll be ready to help out wherever I'm able, as soon as you start editing it again. Enjoy the break, and see you soon! --RexxS (talk) 19:34, 1 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
