Museum hacks and museum edits

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

  • February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
  • February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
  • February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

If you have any questions or have any requests, please email me at james.hare wikimediadc.org.

Edit filter

Hi swpb, the discussion on marking articles created from redirects on the new pages feed closed in favour of doing so. As such I've re-enabled Special:AbuseFilter/342 per your request. I'm going to leave it as log-only for a week or so to make sure it's behaving as intended and then I can enable some tagging or whatever it is that you need. Sam Walton (talk) 00:25, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

Seems to be working well on the whole though one thing that's occurred to me is reverts. If a user creates an article from a redirect, is reverted, and then creates it again, we'd want to have removed and re-added that entry to the list, in the same way that deleted and recreated pages are handled. That's not something I can think of a sensible solution for from an edit filter point of view though, and will have to be addressed in the implementation of the filter to the new pages feed. Unless you've noticed something though, it appears to be working correctly. Sam Walton (talk) 12:11, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

KAZ Minerals

Hi Swpb, First, I am extremely sorry if I am making a mess by my post here, I am very new to Wikipedia, and it scares me a lot, I went through the guidelines and I will do my best to abide by them. Sorry for not replying back about the proposed deletion of KAZ Minerals, to be honest I think I was too scared of Wikipedia to come back. I could not find the {{proposed deletion/dated...}} on KAZ Minerals page, but I guess it was removed during my 4 month absence, again I sincerely apologise for causing someone else trouble. Thank you for your help. Regards Aya Nurpeissova (talk) 15:07, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:Dan logo.jpeg

Thanks for uploading File:Dan logo.jpeg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 15:38, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Vladimir Lobashev, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Polarization. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Pings not working

Hi, just letting you know that your using the {{to}} template is not consistently pinging me. To wit:

I note that Wikipedia:Notifications § Notification messages §§ Triggering events says that, in order for notifications to be triggered by mentioning a user on a talk page, "the post containing a link to a user page must be signed; if the edit does not add a new signature to the page, no notification will be sent." It looks like in some of your posts you signed in a separate edit which would explain why the notifications weren't triggered (and why I did receive a notification for the third one). I'm not sure about the first case, but maybe the notification didn't work because your signature wasn't at the end of the post? sroc 💬 14:08, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

General relativity

The general relativity article has several relative positioning references to images, not just the one that you changed. Do you think that I should add figure numbering? I did so in the article on interferometry which is about 80% my work, and numbering has been very successful (except when somebody switches the figures around...) Making Wikipedia more mobile friendly is very important, given the number who access it from their phones. Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 01:58, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia from the Anatomy Wikiproject!

Welcome to Wikipedia from WikiProject Anatomy! We're a group of editors who strive to improve the quality of anatomy articles here on Wikipedia. One of our members has noticed that you are involved in editing anatomy articles; it's great to have a new interested editor on board. In your wiki-voyages, a few things that may be relevant to editing wikipedia articles are:

  • Thanks for coming aboard! We always appreciate a new editor. Feel free to leave us a message at any time on the WikiProject Anatomy talk page. If you are interested in joining the project yourself, there is a participant list where you can sign up. Please leave a message on the talk page if you have any problems, suggestions, would like review of an article, need suggestions for articles to edit, or would like some collaboration when editing!
  • You will make a big difference to the quality of information by adding reliable sources. Sourcing anatomy articles is essential and makes a big difference to the quality of articles. And, while you're at it, why not use a book to source information, which can source multiple articles at once!
  • We try and use a standard way of arranging the content in each article. That layout is here. These headings let us have a standard way of presenting the information in anatomical articles, indicate what information may have been forgotten, and save angst when trying to decide how to organise an article. That said, this might not suit every article. If in doubt, be bold!
  • We write for a general audience. Every reader should be able to understand anatomical articles, so when possible please write in a simple form—most readers do not understand anatomical jargon. See this essay for more details.

Feel free to contact us on the WikiProject Anatomy talk page if you have any problems, or wish to join us. I wish you all the best on your wiki-voyages! --Tom (LT) (talk) 22:02, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

Admittedly this is not for existing users but it'll do. Thanks for popping those anatomical diagram templates on the pages. It's useful to have a separate category, and we have been discussing these at WT:ANATOMY at the moment, so it's a serendipitous coincidence. --Tom (LT) (talk) 22:02, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

@LT910001: My pleasure! Please change the template as you see fit; a better icon, or whatever. Swpbtalk 22:14, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

Cxlum7 Speedy Deletion Request

The page cxlum7 was nominated for speedy deletion and I believe your reasoning was illogical as I can find many small YouTuber's on the site without much trouble. Please reconsider the deletion of future small YouTuber's Wikipedia pages. It's also easier to find out more about the small YouTuber's as they have very limited resources. Wikipedia provides a quick and easy way to find out about the YouTuber. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnny61232 (talkcontribs) 09:28, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Grouser plurals

Hey. Thanks for your edit, but should grouser in the 1st lead paragraph be in the plural also? Or is it understood to be some sort of collective noun? I realise the page name is in the singular for ease of linkage, but I felt it was better to be consistent so I guess we should decide upon which quantity we should choose to refer to the items as. Techhead7890 (talk) 03:25, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

@Techhead7890: MOS doesn't seem to take a position on this, and neither do I. "Grousers are devices intended to increase the traction..." would be fine with me; just remember to take out the word "segment". Swpbtalk 13:18, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

It seems to make more sense. Done! Techhead7890 (talk) 00:55, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

List of Nobel laureates affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Study

I notice that you changed "List of Nobel laureates affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Study is a comprehensive list of..." to "This is a comprehensive list of..." I had modeled that intro after the page List of Nobel laureates affiliated with the University of Chicago. But looking further I see that your version seems to be standard. Sorry I reverted your edit. You might want to also change the Chicago page. IAC, thanks for your help in cleaning things up.--Toploftical (talk) 16:06, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

I have reason to believe you are a sockpuppet. You are attempting to create a page that has been removed three times before, and attempting to circumvent a block by creating the page with an altered title. I have opened an investigation into the matter. Swpbtalk 19:06, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

absolutely not just because i started this article im that hacker im just starting a article of a subject not yet legimately put in wikipedia sindikato whoever have created it first deserve to have an article in wikipedia because it is part of Philippine culture (Boweramuck99,7 (talk) 19:23, 16 November 2015 (UTC)).

Can you have a look if all is good for the Wikipedia's guide lines please. ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Moving categories

Hi, Swpb,
Please do not move categories. Instead, list them at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion#Speedy renaming and merging. Doing renames this way has the advantage of having a bot change the categories on all of the original category contents, the pages listed, so you don't have to. Right now, you have moved some categories but not moved the contents of the categories. This is a step that must be done whenever a category is renamed and it's usually simpler to have the bot do this rather than you having to do this manually. Now, you have to recategorize all of the contents of the original categories, which looks like thousands of pages, which is a lot of work for you.
Right now, some of the new categories you have created are empty and subject to CSD C1 deletion. Liz Read! Talk! 08:45, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

To editor Liz:: I was under the impression that a bot would automatically see the redirects and recat the pages. I apologize if this is in error. I will not have a chance today to list everything on CfD; I would appreciate it tremendously if someone could see to it that the move is done right, instead of CSDing the new cats. — s w p b T 13:12, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
I understand that this action was well-intentioned, but I don't think you thought through the consequences all the way. First, you indicated that you thought "Requested photographs of foo" categories would be subcategories of "Requested images of foo", but you didn't turn them into subcategories. Second, you assumed that a bot would magically come along and straighten everything out for you, but that's not how it works. The only way a page could get moved from "Requested photographs of foo" to "Requested images of foo" would be to change the template used on the page from {{photo requested}} to {{image requested}}. There is no bot currently set up to make those kinds of edits. And I don't see how a bot could do that, since someone needs to make a decision whether the request is really for a photo or for some other kind of image. Third, the {{image requested}} template is still hard-coded to categorize pages in "Requested photographs of foo" anyway, so changing the template would not actually accomplish anything, although I see you've made an edit request to address this. Although I'm all in favor of being bold, I'm not in favor of doing things that leave a mess that other editors have to clean up. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 16:06, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
To editor R'n'B: The intent was never for articles with {{photo requested}} to be moved (these, I assume, are truly photo requests), only for articles with {{image requested}} to be moved after that template is updated. The whole point is to separate general image requests from specifically photo requests. All a bot needs to do is move the existing pages to the new categories, and I know there is a bot for that. I thought I'd seen it respond automatically to category moves in the past. — s w p b T 23:05, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Another complication has cropped up. It seems there are a number of templates, besides {{Image requested}}, that automatically categorized pages in the "Requested photographs of FOO" categories. Two examples, definitely not the only ones, are {{WikiProject Biography|needs-photo=y}} and {{WikiProject United States|image-needed=y}}. I encourage you to track all these down and get them corrected, to avoid having a permanently messed-up category hierarchy. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:22, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
To editor R'n'B: I'm already on it; I've just requested the change to {{WikiProject Biography}}, which will address a good number of them. I've been changing other WikiProject templates with the issue as I come across them, and will continue to do so. It's worth noting that there may be some WikiProjects for which it is appropriate to specifically request a photo by default. I doubt there was any way to make this transition without a temporary mess, but I want it to be understood that I have never intended to leave a permanent mess. — s w p b T 15:27, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

If you have a lot of similar editprotected requests, could I suggest that you list them all in one central place and then the person who attends to the request can come along and do the whole lot together. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:54, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion! Where would you recommend I centralize? — s w p b T 13:50, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
I'll answer that question with a question: where have you discussed this renaming proposal? Perhaps that place would be suitable. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:54, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
That's sensible. I've done so here: Category_talk:Wikipedia_requested_images_by_subject#Edit-protected_template_edits_request. — s w p b T
I have made a suggestion on how to move forward with this. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:35, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
Banners don't need to be moved to a image category, unless there is consensus at the WikiProject. JJ98 (Talk) 01:02, 12 December 2015 (UTC)

Please do not pre-emptively alter template documentation, as you did at Template:WikiProject Biography/doc, Template:WikiProject Brazil/doc, Template:WikiProject Comics/doc, Template:WikiProject Dance/doc (twice) and I suspect others. Template documentation is supposed to describe what the template actually does, not what you would like it to do. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:47, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

All the templates whose documentation I changed are slated for corresponding changes; they are edit-protected, and the edits are waiting for an admin or template-editor to get to them. They are part of a larger transition from "photo" to "image" categories that is 99% complete. The requested changes are present on each template's sandbox. You can revert the documentation changes for now if you want, but if you just wait for the requested edits to the templates to be completed, you'll find you won't need to, and in fact you'll want to undo the documentation reversions you've done so far. —swpbT 20:49, 9 December 2015 (UTC)
To editor Redrose64: It's not merely what I would like the templates to do; it's what they will do as soon as the requested edits are carried out. It's a matter of having the documentation be inaccurate for a little while now, or for a little while later. It makes no difference to me when the documentations are updated, but they will need to be. —swpbT 20:51, 9 December 2015 (UTC)
There are edit requests, yes; but many of them have not been acted upon. Even if they do go through, they might not be done exactly as you have requested - somebody might find a flaw, and discuss a modification to your intention, as they did at Template talk:WikiProject Plants#Change photo requests to image requests. Also, I have not yet found one single instance where you have added the new alias to the documentation; I've had to add a lot of those myself, such as at Template:WikiProject Physiology/doc. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:59, 9 December 2015 (UTC)
Like I said, revert if you want. It will just have to be done again later. The mock-ups were in response to a request to save the responding template-editor some work, and the documentation edits were intended in the same vein, but I don't care what you do with them. My bad for missing aliases. —swpbT 21:02, 9 December 2015 (UTC)
