6615th Ranger Force

I wrote this article some years back; I was relatively inexperienced on the website at the time and the article is not my best. I'd been interested in the US Army Rangers at that time, and was surprised that there hadn't been an article on this unit. If I made a mistake there when describing Nye's brief tenure in command, feel free to correct it. I knew nothing about Wikipedia's citation templates at the time, so my sources probably look incorrect, but I can fix them now. DCItalk 20:15, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. I just added a source (2009 book by Col. Robert Black - The Ranger Force, Darby's Rangers in World War II). I happen to be Lt. Colonel Murray's son so I have listened to the oral history of the Rangers since I was old enough to understand. The stories about my father (he is now deceased) came from the men who served with him (he never talked about himself). Every source to include several books by Col. Black and James Altieri (who was in my father's company in the 1st Bn and in my father's 4th battalion later on) talked about Lt. Col. Murray being at Cisterna (he lost every one of his company commanders trying to save the 1st and 3rd as well as had his pack shot off his back by a machine gun). My father was hospitalized later for jaundice after Cisterna when the 4th was attached to the 504th PIR during the defense of the "Hell's Corner" of Anzio. Walt Nye, who was one of my father's favorite officers, did in fact assume command during that period as was the norm for an Executive Officer.

As an interesting note, the 4th Battalion had more dead and wounded trying to save the 1st and 3rd Battalions than those two units lost. The 4th was the last of the "Darby's Rangers" battalions to be disbanded on 26 Oct 44. Sword100 (talk) 02:15, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
