Fran Leeper Buss
Hello SusunW, I hope you are really well and enjoying your African biography chain!
You may remember there was talk on the WiR page of a biography on Maria Elena Lucas? Once I started it as a word doc, I realised that her profile would not really exist publicly if it hadn't been for Fran Leeper Buss . So I have had a go at a page for her. It is a bit thin and I remember you said you might be able to offer a little help in the way of sources. If you had a minute...no hurry..could you take a look and see what you think? Thanks if you can! Balance person (talk) 15:14, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
- Balance person I'll look at this first thing tomorrow. SusunW (talk) 23:45, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
- Balance person I love this story. It's like when I was doing Eunice Foote and discovered Elizabeth Wagner Reed, so I had to write her too. On Buss, I noted that her children's names are Buss and Leeper, which tells me those were her married names. So I checked family search, which led me to her mom's obit, Wilma Irene (née Richardson) Barker. That in turn led me to her father's name C. Francis "Frank" Barker. (The C stands for Clyde). This says she attended Iowa State Teacher's College, First marriage says both of them were students at the University of Iowa. This says hubby graduated in 1969 and they were living in Colorado. I know it is her husband because This says his parents were M/M Lowell Leeper, same as in the marriage notice, although both of these say he was from Lineville. So did she go with him to Philadelphia becomes the question. Still searching. SusunW (talk) 16:20, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- She earned her bachelor's in 1964 and I am positive it is her because the address matches this birth record with her husband's name. This and this give info about the work at the crisis center. The latter one also tells us she was not remarried in August 1972, but was by October, when this appeared. About six months later, her new husband had to go to jail for conscientious objection to the Vietnam War. Weirdly, I find nothing in New Mexico, but I'll try another newspaper database in a bit. Archive.org has this, this, this. SusunW (talk) 17:25, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- Photo is probably available if you want it. That article and this one talk about them both being hired for a counseling job in NM. Another possible photo, but not as good IMO, although the article itself is fabulous. She taught women's studies!!!! at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Book review. There's also a lot at Jstor from the WP library. I hope these help. If you need more, please ask. I am happy to help. I'm going to check out the photo, so one more message will follow. SusunW (talk) 18:26, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- Okay, Balance person on the 11 April 1975 photo. I don't see anything on the photo itself that indicates a copyright, nor a photographer name. The masthead has no verbiage or copyright mark, nor does the publishing notice. Checking the copyright catalog for 1975, there are no entries in Periodicals for the Las Vegas Optic. All of that means that the photograph can be uploaded with the license {{PD-US-no notice}}. As a special bonus, while I was looking for these details, I ran across this on Maria Elena Lucas, one part of the article is about her, the other about Buss's book. It's in Spanish, but you should be able to use google translate and your camera on your phone. part 1, part 2 SusunW (talk) 18:54, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- My goodness you are a complete miracle! Thank you so so much. I will have to find out more about all the sources you use as they are so rich and productive! I will start popping in your citations/references now and will do more tomorrow. Thank you again! I have never added a photo so that will take a little study. I had been planning to learn that soon anyway! Balance person (talk) 19:00, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- Balance person All of those, except archive.org are through the Wikipedia library. As for the photo, I am not technically inclined and can't do anything other than clip and upload. My friend GRuban has magic wands and skills (maybe fairy dust, or spells?) to lighten, brighten, flip and do stuff I have no clue how to do. There should be a clipping tool on your computer that allows you to clip the photo from the rest of the article and save it. Then at the top of a page to the left of the Wikipedia world icon are 3 lines (not the 3 lines next to your user name, above that) and if you push that one option is upload a file. Choose that and then "Upload a freely licensed file". Follow the instructions and use the license I gave you above. If you get stuck, let me know, or ask George. He's really helpful ;) SusunW (talk) 19:21, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi SusunW! I have enough edits now to get into the wikipedia library but am uncertain how I get to newspaper articles such as the ones you found about Fran Leeper Buss from newspaper.com. and newspaper archive etc. I have put these phrases/ organisations' names into the search box but don't get anywhere near news articles. It is probably staring me right in the face but I can't see it at the mo! Balance person (talk) 09:29, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- Balance person No worries. You only need six months editing time and 500 edits to sign up. Sign in to the WP library. At the top of the page is a search bar that only searches EBSCO. You might want to search that database, but usually I know what database I am looking for. Beneath that are a bunch of different resources (mostly in alphabetical order). Scroll down to say newspapers.com or newspaperarchive.com (if she were British, there is a British Newspaper archive tab). Pick newspapers.com and hit the button marked "access collection". Most collections do not require any additional steps, but to clip newspaper articles, you need to then go to the top right corner and create a user login. Once you have done that enter "Fran Buss" in the search bar that says keyword. You will see a bunch of articles appear. (If needed, you can narrow the location or date - the top boxes don't seem to work anymore - by scrolling down to the right side and adjusting the date range or a particular state. You can also change the country from the default of US to the UK, Canada, etc.)
- Click on the first article that pops up. If it is one you want, at the top right there will be a clip and more button that allows you to select text, add a description and then save. A new box will appear at the right. Type a name for the clipping (I usually put the author and title so it's easy to paste into my citation.) and press save. In that box a blue link will appear to the clipping. Press it and it will take you off of the newspaper full page and to the clipping. Sometimes you will find someone else has already clipped an article, you don't have to reclip, just press the blue link. Once you get the clipping link at the top, it will look like this https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/article/arizona-daily-star-buss-fran-poor-wome/145343829/. Change it to <https://www.newspapers.com/article/arizona-daily-star-buss-fran-poor-wome/145343829/ and use that changed link in your article. (No worries if you forget to take out the wikipedialibrary part, a bot will fix it.) Newspaperarchive.com and the British newspaper collection work the same way, in that you must create a separate login to clip. Sounds complicated, but you'll get the hang of it fairly quickly I think. For other sources like Jstor or Oxford U Press, you just search and download the article, no extra steps required, except taking out the WP library proxy. Let me know if you get stuck. - Thanks so much for your kind time and trouble! I am just off out but have saved your instructions and will work through them tomorrow to practice. Then I can use them for Maria Elena Lucas! I really appreciate your teaching. I have so much to learn!! Balance person (talk) 13:14, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- You are very welcome, Balance person. WP technology to me isn't remotely intuitive, so you will see on my user page I have a bunch of notes to myself about how to do stuff. . Feel free to ask any time. If I don't know, I probably know someone who knows, because the technical part is often above my skill level. SusunW (talk) 13:18, 14 April 2024 (UTC)

I think we now have a workable first version of this. When I have time, I'll add those that are missing from Category:Women's studies academics but I think it would now be useful to add a few photos. Perhaps you could help with this as you certainly know who deserves to be highlighted. You may also have other suggestions on how the list could be improved. Over the next few days I'll try to write some new biographies.--Ipigott (talk) 18:40, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hey Ipigott I just finished Monika Triest and tried to add her and her photo to the list. I can add more, but I wanted to ask about placement. Obviously, she's Belgian, but she never started women's studies programs in Belgium, instead at the University of Cincinnati and University of Amsterdam. So where should her photo go and since it overlaps other countries is that bad? SusunW (talk) 23:44, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for adding our first photo. I don't think it matters too much where they are placed but it would be good to have photos of some of the more prominent figures from the early stages as well as some of those who stand out today. Perhaps you can add some yourself or let me know who deserves to be covered. It might also be useful to have some group photos, for example of pertinent conferences or meetings if these can be found.--Ipigott (talk) 05:49, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- Ipigott The problem is going to be the time frames. A lot of the women don't have photos, or if they do they are fair use. Powerhouses like Argentine Ana Amado, or Austrian Edith Saurer, or Bulgarian Krassimira Daskalova or Dutch Francisca de Haan don't have useable photos. I went through the list and found a few Florence Thomas, Rada Borić, Andrea Pető, Erella Shadmi, Gloria Wekker, Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí, Flora Botton, Patricia Mohammed, Mollie C. Davis that have photos we can use, if you like them? SusunW (talk) 14:27, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help, Susun. I've added most of these and moved the TOC left so that the Belgian image can be next to Belgium. Lots of room for many more if they can be found. There are still many more women we should include in the list.--Ipigott (talk) 14:56, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
- Indeed, many. Poco e poco. SusunW (talk) 15:04, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

is at FAC. Just in case. Gog the Mild (talk) 16:33, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
- Gog the Mild: Interested and I would love to, but not sure I'll get to it. Hip deep in the Adichie Peer Review and working on articles for women's studies month, which I think is one of our most critical editathons at WIR. Without the women who created the field, none of the articles about women that now are written would have been possible. Best I can say is I'll try. SusunW (talk) 16:38, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
- No worries. Ganesha usually submits polished work to FAC, and despite being up for less than 24 hours, it is already well into its second review. Gog the Mild (talk) 17:38, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
- Keep an eye on it for me, if you will Gog the Mild. If you need me, I'll do it, but as I said previously I do think Adichie is really important and should be done well, so focusing there. SusunW (talk) 17:52, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

Maria Elena Lucas
Hello SusunW! I have been playing with the research tools you suggested and had success with JSTOR and Newspaper Archive. Fantastic! As Maria Elena Lucas lives, I think? in your part of the world, I wondered if you would be good enough to take a look at the draft? I am aware for example that Chicano/Chicana/Mexican American labels are sensitive. There may well be other things I have missed or got wrong. No hurry from my side. You may notice from the history that I made a mistake and tried to apply categories to the draft. I understand now that I should only do that after a move to main space. Ho hum! Balance person (talk) 09:03, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Balance person I am so happy to see your progress in editing. So glad that you are having success with the Wikipedia library too. For me it is an invaluable resource, as there are no public libraries here and I don't have any affiliations that qualify me to join the private ones. *sigh* I think the article looks fine. As for Chicana/Mexican American, I think you are fine with Chicana, she was part of the movement by that name, and Buss identifies her as such. Basically, as far as I know people who were activists in the 1960-1980s primarily used the term, but after that it fell out of favor, mainly because of the association of machismo with it. If another editor feels strongly enough to change it to Mexican American, I wouldn't object. I also put the categories back. You can see how I did it, basically, you add a leading colon until you take it live. One other note, were it me, I would add the link to Forged Under the Sun from archive.org and insert page numbers for the book's citations. It is easy to do, just use {{rp|page#}} after the citation markup. SusunW (talk) 14:42, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for checking things over and for your encouraging comments. I have swapped all the references to the main book over to the one you suggest. I actually use visual editor so the curly bracket rp page thing didn't work for me but I will investigate further! Thanks again for your time and trouble! Balance person (talk) 15:12, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- Balance person WP technology strikes again! There are other ways to add page numbers, but I don't have a clue how visual editor works. SusunW (talk) 15:24, 19 April 2024 (UTC)

DeepL Translator
I've just come across DeepL Translator which is the system recommended by OKA (Open Knowledge Access). I keep coming across translations by OKA editors and am impressed by the level of quality they achieve. Interestingly, OKA advise their translators not to use Google translate as it causes too many problems. You might like to try it out and let me know what you think. You can access the system here.--Ipigott (talk) 14:24, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you Ipigott. I've saved the link. Always in need of more translation machines. As you know, I use multiple ones simultaneously as they all give a slightly different interpretation and help with understanding. I'll let you know. SusunW (talk) 14:35, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- (pagestalking) Thank you, Ipigott for mentioning this. When I saw the edit summary, I decided to pop in and mention that I have been using DeepL for some time and I really like it. For the languages that it covers, I think its output is better than the ggl alternative (though I continue to use both, for understanding, as you say, Susun). Unfortunately, DeepL doesn't provide translations for all the languages that I have interests in, e.g., Catalan. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:40, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- Glad to see you have positive experience with DeepL, Rosie. As for Catalan, I've come across very few Wikipedia articles which are not also available in extenso in Castilian Spanish.--Ipigott (talk) 15:28, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, that's true, Ian, but my preference is to translate from the original WP article, and if it's CA-WP, then I immerse myself in it, though I will look at the ES-WP article, too. Perhaps this is because of a decades' old love for Catalonia in general, Barcelona in particular. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 16:04, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, that Rosiestep. I also use Yandex which is especially good for Russian and Eastern European languages and also Systran which works well on Dutch and particularly the Caribbean versions. SusunW (talk) 14:52, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- Good to know, Susun. More stuff I was unaware of; I'll add both to my tools list. Thanks. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:13, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

- You "just came across"? I said how good it was a few years back! I'm pretty sure I also left a note on the Women in Red talk page too! Though now there is only a 1500 word limit unless you sign in.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:48, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Dr. Blofeld: Thanks for stepping in. Maybe I looked it up at the time but as it started with languages I know pretty well it was probably not of much interest to me personally. In any case, I don't "translate" articles from other language versions of Wikipedia but I do draw on their sources when creating English versions, mainly in connection with biographies of women. If however I'm reviewing articles translated by others, particularly newbies, I sometimes run a Google translation myself to see how errors have occurred. What particularly struck me now was that OKA specifically recommends DeepL as being better than Google for translating Wikipedia articles. It's the first time I've seen such strong support. Over the next few weeks, I'll try to experiment a bit myself to see if there really are significant differences. (It looks to me as if the OKA recommendation goes back to 2022. I've noticed major improvements in Google translate since then.)--Ipigott (talk) 05:35, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- I think it was 2022 I recommended it, and pretty sure Susun noted it too! It's definitely a lot better for German and Spanish. I still use google translate more though as you can hear an audio of the text. I don't like that DeepL now have a 1500 word restriction without signing up. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:23, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- I don't let the word restriction get in the way. My work-around is to have multiple DeepL and Ggl tabs open. Listening to the audio of the text? That's brilliant, @Dr. Blofeld:! Never thought about doing that but I can see (hear... haha) the benefit. I say this especially as I am mentoring a polyglot African Wikipedian who "listens" to Wikipedia policy pages rather than only "reading" them. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:07, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- The best way to learn a language is to view the text and translation, hear the audio, and then repeat it along with the audio, a technique called "shadowing" I find. Paste 4000-5000 words of foreign wiki articles into google translate and select the slowest voice option. It's a time issue for me, you need to put in an enormous amount of work and hours to become really fluent. At present I'm happy just reading a few thousand words a week in a few different languages and learning very gradually, but you need to really be living in a country where you need to speak all day every day to really become a great speaker. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:36, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

OKA
I think the OKA conversation (disclosed-paid-editor translations from some language Wikipedia into EN-WP) would be more appropriate on the WikiProject Intertranswiki talkpage than your talkpage, so I'm going to be bold and copy/paste it here. I like to see Appalachian Spring on the Main page today (not by me, just interested and reviewed, and a bit proud that I brought the woman's pic to lead and Main page), and I also made it my story. - How do you like the statue (see places)? I was undecided so show three versions ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:19, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
- I did not know of the ballet, but obviously know who Graham was. Cool article and photo. Love the statue. My favorite view is the 3/4 profile with the tree and bay behind her. Makes the statue more prominent. SusunW (talk) 17:34, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! - Today I see Marian Anderson as my top story (by NBC, 1939), and below (on my talk) three people with raised arms, - and the place is the cherry blossom in Frauenstein. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:48, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
- I love Marian Anderson, who was admired by Mahalia Jackson. The cherry blossoms remind me of dogwood/redbud season in Oklahoma. Beautiful. SusunW (talk) 17:17, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
- I love dogwoods - and we don't have them, but plum tree blossom, for Kalevi Kiviniemi in the snow - see my talk --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:12, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- My story today is about a piece composed for the Second Sunday after Easter 300 years ago, and I just returned from a (long) opera about the same age, with soprano Pretty Yende --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:22, 14 April 2024 (UTC)
- Very cool. My story today is that I have had no internet since yesterday. Feeling very "behind". SusunW (talk) 18:51, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
- I remember one day like that which felt strange. - Relief: the last of six RD articles in one week is now on the Main page - yesterday I went to a great recital with many anti-war songs by Jewish composers whose music was banned by the Nazis. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:57, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
- That sounds like an interesting concert. We're into the hot season and there probably won't be much outdoor activity until June. April and May are pretty brutal - right now its 42C with about 40% humidity. My best friend is my fan right now. SusunW (talk) 21:11, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
- keep cool! - The concert was fascinating, very intense, and I was as close to the singer as can be (see pic). The RD articles were followed by two birthdays in a row, and I prefer those (see my talk). Will write about a woman today, after all these men, - his partner in the opera by one of the composers whose music was banned by the Nazis, - an opera composed in 1906 and not performed until 1980, and for DYK still not wanted - "not interesting to a broad audience". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:40, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- The concert truly sounds amazing. Here, they happen at night, once it is cooler. Very rarely start before 10 p.m., in public squares all over the city. Today, as ever, I am writing about a woman, who traveled a lot and then taught other women about women - also "not interesting to a broad audience". SusunW (talk) 14:03, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
- ... images of a flock of sheep that I met by chance on the 300th birthday of cantata Du Hirte Israel, höre, BWV 104, on the concert program - Sometimes I think I am not able to communicate in English - see nom for Liviu Holender, yes the one who sang the recital. (The pianist was also wonderful but with just one major opera conducting job, it's a bit too soon to write about him.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:34, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt I read the nomination comments and honestly I think I would not be able to communicate in English or any other language either. I miss Yoninah and her ability to shepherd things through DYK. I just cannot. I don't have the ability to see the same nuances or understand the conversations there. As for the sheep, however did you get them to pose from tallest to smallest in that fashion? The photo is priceless! Also love the yellow flowers. SusunW (talk) 21:11, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- DYK: I stayed away for a year but realized it's not good for the coverage of the topics ;) - Sheep: I simply admired them, and they must have felt that. I took about 20 pics, 5 of those 3, but chose the best ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:19, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- today a sad task - memory of Andrew Davis - turned into entertainment (yt at the bottom of his article, actually both) -- the latest pictures capture extreme weather --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:46, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt the YouTube video was lovely. I also like the storm photos and the flowering trees. Growing up in the place with the most violent weather in the US, I love a good storm. Clouds and lightening dancing across the sky can be beautiful, but you have to know when it's safe to watch and when you should get in the tornado shelter. SusunW (talk) 22:59, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! - Today you can look at the last three stories or "music" on my talk: the same topics, Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine (one woman's creation), Samuel Kummer and (pictured) one row of 8 double basses and another of 5 bassists ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:43, 30 April 2024 (UTC)

Women in Green GA Editathon June 2024 - Going Back in Time
Hello SusunW:
WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in June 2024!
Running from June 1 to 30, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Going Back in Time! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 20 centuries by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.
We hope to see you there!

--Lajmmoore (talk 07:06, 23 May 2024 (UTC) via MassMessaging
Greetings.
Hi @SusunW, I plan on closing the peer review since no one seems to be responding. Per off wiki, my mother said it was fine since I have to show her (she literally speaks English better). I also plan to see my friend Vanderwaalforces who is an expert and can copy edit it before sending it to FAR, and adhere to the review that will be further made there (I also know it isn't going to be tough this time). I want your thought in this. Safari ScribeEdits! Talk! 13:10, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
- SafariScribe My thoughts are that Graham said he is reading it and would have comments. My experience is that reviewers can take a week to ten days to review but nominators need to respond immediately to their feedback. As volunteers, their time may not be completely focused on your request, they may have real life commitments, etc. After a week, ping him and tell him that if he has no feedback you want to close the peer review. Personally, I'd like to see at least 2 other reviewers before it is nominated, but we may not get those. SusunW (talk) 14:16, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
- I have no problem with any. I will wait while I keep copy editing. Safari ScribeEdits! Talk! 14:44, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
- SafariScribe I know it's frustrating and hard to be patient. I empathize. SusunW (talk) 14:47, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

For information, as I am sure you won't be busy. Gog the Mild (talk) 20:25, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, that's me, sitting here twiddling my thumbs doing nothing. I actually spent a month on Adichie. Would that we had more input from other reviewers, but I've done the best that I could to guide it along. Reviewing is not my forte, but I gave it my best. WIG has an upcoming editathon, but I am torn. None of my GA are being reviewed, apparently because I don't review enough. So, do I spend another month just reviewing? or do I actually try to write something? It's frustrating, because I think that the best use of my skills, and what I enjoy, is writing, but I think may just need to stop nominating altogether. I genuinely believe that other people's input improves an article, but the pressure to review tit for tat feels like a lot. That said, I'll look at her. SusunW (talk) 14:56, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- Now I feel bad. I like to draw articles I think will interest to your attention, but please don't feel under any obligation to do anything about any of them. That said, you are a very good reviewer. But you also write excellent articles. So short of cloning you I dunno what the best solution is. Gog the Mild (talk) 10:17, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- Gog the Mild why should you feel bad? You never once told me that to get a review I had to do a review of something. I love that you tell me when there are articles I would be interested in reviewing. I feel no pressure from you at all. Methinks cloning me would create far more problems than solutions...I don't follow rules well, except when I do. I march to drums no one else hears, I literally dance at the supermarket. I am unpredictable and at the same time very predictable. SusunW (talk) 13:54, 31 May 2024 (UTC)

On the bicentenary of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, I remember our recent uplifting choral concert in pictures, on my user page and in my concerts (leading to the two at the church's article). The closest was in the paper. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:22, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, I've been hip deep with my birthday and other real life stuff and not on line much. The paper article is paywalled, sigh, but I am glad you enjoyed the concert. Love, love, love your photos. The flowers from 21 April are stunning, the wisteria on the 28th and 30th are fascinating (so different, but both lovely), the flower bed looks like the bouquet my housekeeper brought me on my birthday the same day. SusunW (talk) 13:32, 8 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you so much, you are looking closer than many, no matter when. Rosie saw the pic, - you too? It's pay-walled for me, too, and believe it or not: I haven's seen the text, - who cares ;) - More wisteria in the latest pics, for a late happy birthday! - Today is the Feast of the Ascension for which Bach composed his oratorio, - perhaps watch a bit how the closing movement was performed in Bach's church. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:13, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
- Wisteria is lovely. Also those Hawthorne blossoms. I think I have never seen such before. But what caught my eye most was "Blooming greater celandine, Ehrenbach, after rain". Dear Chaac, we need rain. Surviving May is always the goal here because in June, rain will return and break the heat. They say that this is the hottest May on record. It's been between 44C/111F and 48C/118F all week with humidity above 70%. The Bach piece was fabulous. Thanks for sharing. SusunW (talk) 13:39, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- Magdalena Hinterdobler is on the Main page today, together with an opera that reviewers deemed not interesting and too obscure for our general readers. The soprano thought differently, - listen and see. - Also on the Main page: a TFA by sadly missed Vami_IV. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:39, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- did you listen and see? - today's story has a pic of a woman holding her cat, a DYK of 5 years ago - the recent pics show 2 orange tip butterflies --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:19, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- I did listen, no idea why I didn't comment, but probably real life stuff. My mom got a kitten for mother's day and was so keen to show him off on our zoom call. The butterflies are really cool. Never seen anything like them. I also love the blue forget-me-nots. Blue flowers are rare here, probably the heat. SusunW (talk) 15:37, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
- I heard lovely chamber music today, and the DYK mentions "profoundly human" singing (that you can watch), connected to a place where we'll sing in September - I took a rain pic for you but just got to a week ago, - patience please --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:42, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
- You are so thoughtful. Yes, we definitely are hoping for rain. Those flowering leeks are gorgeous! SusunW (talk) 15:55, 18 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, - and here come the rainy pictures especially for you ;) - I liked seeing Erschallet, ihr Lieder on the Main page today, 310 years after the first performance! We sang it in 2000. Today's program was easier but also spirited. I found a nice video of "I will sing with the spirit", with nature photography, - enjoy. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:40, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
- I love the willow and the last one of the rain on the water in Waldpark Mannheim. Lovely video too. Hoping the power stays on today, but Les bought us a battery-operated fan in the event that it goes out again. Too many people using air conditioning because of the heat is overloading the power grid. *sigh* SusunW (talk) 13:15, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- Wish I could pass you some rain! (Flooding in some areas here.) - Thank you for improving articles in May! - Today's story mentions a concert I loved to hear and a piece I loved to sing in choir, 150 years old OTD. - Cute family music-making video in the baritone's article, look for Wohnzimmer = living room. In the end he sings (and plays piano) with dad, c. 85 then, in the beginning of the pandemic when he couldn't leave home (in Austria) and work place (in Germany) was closed anyway. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:40, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt I thought of you last night when we were watching The Piano. One of the people who played in Victoria Station was just amazing. His style is a fusion of baroque and jazz and he sings (counter-tenor) in a made up language, because he doesn't want the words to distract people from experiencing the music. It was truly phenomenal. Perhaps you can hear it here. (it won't play for me in Mexico) SusunW (talk) 15:55, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
- I could listen, but it took a while to load - then the box was black. Quite unusual! - one more rain pic --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:35, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
- I'm glad you could hear it. Yes, very unusual. Love the yellow roses, my favorite. The sculpture is interesting and that horse head viol. SusunW (talk) 22:27, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! Come see the roses some day ;) - Today's story (per TFP) is Ethel Smyth, and you are the first I asked: could she by GA? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:41, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
- Now I asked more, and think she might be even FA. Imagine on IWD! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:11, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
- That would be really cool. I've spent the last month mentoring an editor working on his first FA nomination, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She would also make a great candidate for IWD if we manage to finish the peer reviews and pass the nomination. SusunW (talk) 15:17, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
- What do think then of planning ahead, trying to make Smyth a GA for a DYK that day 2025, and perhaps FA the following year. - I have plenty of Bach this year, each week a cantata turning 300, next BWV 20, and so no need to learn a new topic ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:25, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
- Definitely think that is a doable plan! SusunW (talk) 15:29, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! - Today's story is about Samuel Kummer, one of five items on the Main page - more musing on my talk --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:19, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- So sad that he died so young. SusunW (talk) 14:57, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- Did you listen to his postlude? - last offer in May: photos of the river Rhine, and the adjacent Eltville rose garden, - high water and interesting weather (thinking of you) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:19, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I listened. Love the river photos. Did you know we have no above ground rivers in Yucatán? SusunW (talk) 20:44, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- I may have known but forgot. Long ago that I travelled there from Maya place to Maya place. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:32, 31 May 2024 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!
The Writer's Barnstar | |
I have many Barnstar to offer but specifically this one. Thanks for all your edits including minor copy edits, as I enjoy reading your articles, and even see tips of how you write from scratch; those has made me write well for the past days after I had worked with you. The review you made gave more insight in reviewing, source analysis, words to watch, and more. Thanks for being that excellent and motivating. You are an awesome person. Safari ScribeEdits! - Draken seems to be done with the review and had made some changes including Wikipedia:WikiVoice aspects. I now need a final copy edit which I have sent to a friend, a copy editor from the guild. I know you may also have friends who copy edit well too since when more hands do something, an improvement never regard, rather it increases. Thanks and waiting for your responsive reply and encouragement. Safari ScribeEdits! Talk! 14:37, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- Wow! Thank you very much SafariScribe. I truly appreciate your encouragement. I saw that you had more feedback on the peer review, so yes on to the last copyedit and renomination. I'll keep a watch out, but let me know when you nominate it. SusunW (talk) 14:39, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

This will be a reality and thanks being the greatest mentor I have ever seen. Well, I may also have done an early nomination, but like I told you, I want to learn as many as to help improve my writing. I will allow and see comments and corrections which I will fix boldly. Thanks and will wait for your amazing comment. Safari ScribeEdits! Talk! 06:44, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
