It was one I listened to, and enjoyed tremendously, - Rheingau Musik Festival, presenting Voces8 a week later. The encore was Dona nobis pacem, to the music of Bach's Air, and I thought how wise, but then found that Biller had made that arrangement, - so not only a comment to a current war but also a bow to the predecessor. - Good to see your tenor on the Main page today. The last week brought more outstanding concerts and bike tours, - how is your summer? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:42, 21 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the link. Glad you have enjoyed the concerts and bike tours. I am in the north of England, so we have had more rain here than in the south (which is where I come from). The weather here is quite pleasantly cool at the moment. However, where I am, we are expecting water rationing at the end of this month, and electricity cuts during the winter. I remember that from the 1970s, and it was not a problem, but then I had a hearth in the house. Today, many people don't have a hearth, and non-smokeless fuel is not permitted anyway. It will be much harder now for a lot of people to cope without heating during electricity cuts. Storye book (talk) 21:01, 21 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Wrong image

edit

Someone has called conflated two different John Jolliffes. The picture has been changed to the wrong person and the John Jolliffe who was Bodley’s librarian has nothing to do with the Asquiths. He has born in Hastings in 1929, parents Willam Benjamin Jolliffe and Gwendolen Ada Mary Gadd. He was my father and I am going to undo the edits that have conflated his entry with someone else MaryPercival (talk) 18:42, 17 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

@MaryPercival: Is this John Jolliffe, Bodley's librarian here? If so, I can add a thumbnail of the face part of the image to the article, using a particular licence in accordance with WP policy. If that is the wrong picture, then can you give me a link to an online picture of the correct John Jolliffe (librarian)?
Meanwhile, please note that as the daughter of John Jolliffe (librarian) you have a conflict of interest when editing the article, and that needs to be declared in accordance with WP policy. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. I note that you have added his parents' names, which may not appear in the existing citations. If you are unable to confirm with citations that your added facts appear in the existing citations, then your edits are not verifiable and may be deleted. Storye book (talk) 20:12, 17 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
(watching:) "may" be deleted, but why not take advantage of family knowledge? It's not like adding wild claims about achievements. Mary, please explain on the article talk that you are the subject's daughter, and exactly which facts you added based on what, such a birth certificate in your hands. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:17, 17 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

DYK

September songs

... that your clarification and diplomacy on DYK is much appreciated? In case you meant a formal approval, it would need a tick. I had 4 music items on 11 Sep, DYK, singing in church and Verdi rehearsal, and listening to a mezzo in a synagogue, and a choir in Unionskirche, both pictured, - Tag des offenen Denkmals? Interesting mezzo! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Done. Also, thank you for the links. Excellent. Storye book (talk) 13:18, 13 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! More if you like. The rose pic was taken on 11 Sep 2021, and this year was full of music that day, Tag des offenen Denkmals, not only singing in church and rehearsals for Verdi's Requiem, but two concerts at special places pictured, one a synagogue (pictured on its wall). Today three DYK: a piece we'll perform on Sunday, a violinist we heard in June playing the Berg Concerto, and a Youth Orchestra shaped by a conductor who recently died. Almost too much of a good thing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:38, 14 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Congratulations on all those DYKs. You are very strong, to hang on in there in spite of certain reviewers. Keep up the good work! Storye book (talk) 08:43, 15 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

((Hugs)) Storye book (talk) 18:42, 17 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

feel hugs! - today, we sang old music for two choirs at church, pictured, scroll to the image of the organ of the month of the Diocese of Limburg (my perspective), and if you have time, watch the video about it - I nominated the second piece - the mass - for DYK, with a rather plain hook, - his 12-choir Te Deum would be more spectacular but is lost, - only the rave reviews extant. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:26, 18 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
The Schutz? When I was in certain choir concerts in the 80s, I used to hear Schutz played a lot. Very exciting. Simon Lindley directed us at that time, and he was the organist. Storye book (talk) 07:22, 19 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
thank you! ... and today I wrote an article about music premiered today, Like as the hart. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:09, 19 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

thank you! - ... and yesterday I wrote Who shall separate us? and today we enjoy Spannungen (tensions, sparks ...) - chamber music --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:55, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for those links. I enjoyed the Who shall separate us at the service on TV. It worked very well. Storye book (talk) 16:08, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! - travel and strings sound --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
I have another DYK, different reviewer, and perhaps really could use a better hook, - not "my" article, just rescued from draft and nominated, - look for Hanke. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:49, 26 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sorry I have very limited access to broadband at the moment, and none for the pc where I do all my WP work. If you can send me a direct link to the relevant DYK template, I might be able to edit it briefly via my phone. Email me to get a quicker response. Today is Erntedank in Germany, thanksgiving, and we celebrated our village's 650th anniversary, and had the dress rehearsal for Verdi's Requiem with an interesting band of marimba, piano, horn, bass, timpani and drum, - concert tomorrow, our national holiday. Seeing a pic I took on the Main page was also a nice harvest. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:22, 2 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sorry I missed the Hart article template previously. Done it now. Storye book (talk) 21:10, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I nominate Silvia Hauer now, a day late, so will need mercy that a certain reviewer would not grant, and help with what the critic wrote. Mr. Stern went into great detail about the conductor's bravery, and the politics of the piece, but wrote little about the soloists, + it's in German and a paywall. He wrote: Über dem Chor "leuchtet ein starkes Solistenquartett", then giving the names. Is there a better word for a vocal "leuchten" than "shine"? He also wrote, now about the women only: "... überstrahlt von den Stimmen ..."! What would that be in English when meant positively? ... something with radiance? Anyway, I wasn't happy with the reviewer's lack of giving each of four wonderful singers with personal character a specific credit. There was a lot of drama, and then the unison of the two women opening the Agnus Dei which was out of this world. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:10, 14 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
A day late is usually OK on DYK. I'll look at it this afternoon, UK time. Storye book (talk) 12:16, 14 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Just the beginning. - Language question: "outshine" sounds to me a bit like a competition in brilliance, but it's given in the composition that the soloists shine even more than the choir (not the orchestra). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:46, 14 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Oops, my mistake. I have corrected it. Storye book (talk) 14:52, 14 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Memorial Chapel, Hastings

edit

The story of this short-lived chapel, the façade of which still exists, is fascinating: I've been researching it recently in connection with the various works of Thomas Elworthy. There's too much in the way of "original research" needed for it to be suitable for Wikipedia, so I'm intending to write a study for possible external publication. There is some very interesting "scandal" associated with the chapel and its founding minister! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 20:07, 3 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Ooh, scandal. Excellent. Let me know when it's published, please? Storye book (talk) 20:20, 3 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Will do! It will take quite a long time to see the light of day, though, I suspect: needs a trip to the RIBA archives, among other things. Elworthy did a lot of good work in the Hastings area, so I want to do him justice! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 20:49, 3 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Sounds like a worthwhile project. Your local Civic Society may support you. Storye book (talk) 02:55, 4 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
