24 DVD covers

Hey, I just noticed all the covers for the 24 DVD images have been changed, with the previous versions being deleted. Now don't take any offense to this, but why did you change them? Since 24 is an American show, it's most logical and best practice to use region 1 covers (they also don't feature all those ugly logos on them). The color scheme for the infobox and episode list are also derived from the region 1 covers. I understand the region 4 covers do feature other cast members besides Bauer, but there is already cast images present in the article to display that season's cast. • Hey there. I uploaded over the other versions of the DVD covers for a few reasons, the other images were too large and looked a bit odd (they seemed three-dimensional) and not flat. I agree with you about the logos though, so perhaps we could use the DVD covers from Region 2 instead (same image but without the massive classification logo)? They're shown here. We can always update the infoboxes. I was actually thinking about rewriting the season articles at some point either way. I have to say that stuff like this is way too long. I'm still in favor of using the region 1 covers (for the reasons I listed above and that's what was originally there). I can't remember how large they were, but they should be 250px in the infobox, as currently they're like 192px which is too small. If you don't object, I'd like to upload the region 1 covers. Hm, I am afraid I'm going to have to disagree here. It's true that it's an American TV show, yes, but it is distributed worldwide, and if possible our articles should demonstrate that. Region 1 (which has the cover art you suggest) is USA and Canada only, where regions 2 and 4 (which have the alternative cover art I suggested encompasses (from the DVD region article) Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Greenland, French Overseas departments and territories for region 2, and Mexico, South America, Central America, Caribbean, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea and most of Oceania for region 4. I also note that originally, the articles had no DVD covers at all, instead the cast photo was used in the info box. We have a few options here. A composite image in the info box (displaying the two alternate covers side by side) won't work with our non-free content policies, so that's out. I noticed the season articles for the TV series House uses alternate region covers (season 1 uses region 2, season 2 uses region 4, season 3 uses region 1 etc) but that's a bit inconsistent. We could also use a screenshot from a major event or plot within the season, and use that in the info box, or we could try and locate a promotional poster for each season and use that in the info box, or we could revert back to the cast photo in the info box (which represents the season much better than a DVD cover anyways. As for the resolution of the pictures, we've been standardizing portrait images to 200px for a while (see the info boxes of Allison Taylor, Jack Bauer and Bill Buchanan as a few examples) so we could always bump the resolution up to 200px. If we revert back to the cast image, 300px was the norm, so we could always do that instead. Steven Crossin ^{Join the DR army!} 21:16, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Well, not to be anal, but "better" is of course subjective. Indeed, I picked the alternative poster because I thought it looked better, with the reflecting image of the Washington Monument and all. He's also in the attire that he appeared in for quite a few promo images (such as the one in the Jack Bauer infobox). I suppose my answer is, not opposed, but I prefer this image. 24 Redemption poster

Hello again, I found a source for the film poster: http://www.impawards.com/tv/twenty_four_redemption.html. In the film project, we try to use the original poster as they showcase how a film was promoted on it's release opposed to later on it's career. Using a film poster also eliminates arguments over which Region DVD cover should be used as this poster focuses on the original release date. As for that website you gave me with genres, it also refers to "TV Series" as a genre so I wouldn't call it appropriate. Rotten Tomatoes also calls some films as "Foreign" as a genre which is inappropriate as well. Can we keep it action for now? Andrzejbanas (talk) 04:04, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

• Hmm, I personally tend to favour DVD covers, but I see the guideline does recommend film posters instead. As for the genre, it doesn't bother me that much. Action fits well, and while I feel major aspects of the film qualify as drama as well and aren't really covered by the Action genre, am happy to concede on that. They have a taxonomic search function, so it can be a great way to find a journal article with a description of a particular species and get a short article started. Mentorship info

Hmm, well one would generally approach a user who they wish to be their mentor and ask them directly. It's only generally in cases where ArbCom imposes mentors on users that the mentoree has no real say in who their mentors is. I have a program that I use to teach users the ropes on Wikipedia, so I'm not sure if this will be of any help to you, but let me know either way. I'm reasonably free at the moment. Hmm....in theory I could. I'm not overly familiar with you at all, the areas you edit or the concerns that were raised at the RFC/U. I think the first thing I need to know is how you think mentorship will help you, that it's something you'd take seriously and be willing to have conditions imposed, if necessary. While I haven't read over the RFC carefully yet, I do note that many were in favour of a mentorship option, but others advocated blocking or outright topic bans. It'd be helpful if you could provide me a brief summary of the issues that got you to this point, as well as what you plan to do in future to prevent these issues from happening again. That's the main purpose of mentorship, guiding you along and ultimately keeping you out of trouble, but you need to help yourself at the same time. A mentor can't really help you formulate your arguments for you. They can, however, better help you understand policy so you are able to make proper, reasonable comments that are within policy. My major 'shortcoming' is that I've no empathy for the political sensivities of British & Irish editors, at those articles. I can see from the RFC you have had some issues with these articles. What I'm not really seeing is an understanding for the need to change. Mentorship should not be taken lightly, it's generally a lesser sanction as opposed to say, an outright topic ban or blocking. What I want to know is how you think I can help you? Do you want me to guide you through policy, do you want to use me as a sounding board before you engage in discussions or is it something else. I cannot help you change the minds of others, that is what discussion is for. But I can help guide you where possible. I noticed on your RFC you stated you didn't want your mentor to tell you not to contribute to these articles. While I agree in the long term, I think that taking a break for a little while (say a month) may help us turn things around. Tempers are still hot, and while it's not just you in the wrong, often taking the high road is best. We will spend that month working on other things. Hm...perhaps a few things to get you started. Martha Logan is what we call a good article, which means its basically well written and has been reviewed, but is not as good as a featured article. I suppose that shows the balance between plot and real world info that we look for in articles. I noticed with references you were adding, they were generally URLs only, so I've got a script that will should help you with adding references. Go to this page and add this line of code to it: importScript('User:Steven Crossin/reftools.js');, then clear your cache. When you have done that, you should see a new button in the edit toolbar (curly brackets). It is a way to add references that are better formatted. Give it a go? Eh, would I have edited the article myself? No, I tend to offer guidance, observe and discuss more than anything. But I don't disagree with his actions. Simply undoing an edit with the equivalent of "I disagree" when an edit has been made with reasoning isn't really following BRD at all.
