Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions.

Currently, you are editing without a username. You can continue to do so, as you are not required to log in to Wikipedia to read and edit articles; however, logging in will result in a username being shown instead of your IP address (yours is S.Örvarr.S). Logging in does not require any personal details, and there are many other benefits for logging in.

When you edit pages:

  • Please respect others' copyrights; do not copy and paste the contents from webpages directly.
  • Please use a neutral point of view when editing articles; this is possibly the most important Wikipedia policy.
  • If you are testing, please use the Sandbox to do so.
  • Do not add unreasonable contents into any articles, such as copyrighted text, advertisement messages, and text that is not related to an article's subject. Adding such content or editing articles maliciously is considered vandalism.

The Wikipedia Tutorial is a good place to start learning about Wikipedia. For now, if you are stuck, you can click the edit this page tab above, type {{helpme}} in the edit box, and then click Save Page; an experienced Wikipedian will be around shortly to answer any questions you may have. Also feel free to ask a question on my talk page. I will answer your questions as far as I can! Thank you again for contributing to Wikipedia. John Vandenberg 23:56, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Request edit

Do you have a microphone? If so, we are in need of some recordings in OGG format of the cognates listed here, apparently my pronunciation was inaccurate and so a native Icelander was requested. It’s a hard language! LOL. Anyway, if you could drop me line to let me know if you’re interested or not. Thanks! Max Naylor 13:24, 2 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Góða(n) daginn edit

Thanks for your message. From what I understand, both versions are correct. As you said, "flest fólk segir Góðan daginn". I've never seen or heard Góða daginn used (although I'm not a native speaker, so I don't know how often it's actually used in Iceland). Certainly, it's never been mentioned in any phrase books or Icelandic courses I've used. Also, a Google search for "góða daginn" returns only around 250 results, and a number of those are links to discussions about which version is right.

Anyway, I think the bottom line is this: the article is primarily intended for English speakers, not necessarily Icelanders. The phrase in question is part of a list of phrases for foreigners, not a grammar textbook. It is therefore better to use the most commonly used variant: góðan daginn, so as not to confuse learners. I assume the article you read is this one. Note the last sentence: "Myndirnar góðan dag og góða daginn eru því málfræðilega réttar en góðan daginn er algeng málvenja." Yes, it's technically grammatically wrong, but most people use it as a set phrase.

A translation request edit

Hi, I was just wondering if you could translate this passage:

Smjörið er brætt og hveitið smátt og smátt hrært út í það, þangað til það er gengið upp í smjörið. Síðan er mjólkinni smáhellt út í, og hrært stöðugt í, til þess ekki fari í kekki. Þegar mjólkin er gengin upp og grauturinn orðinn vel jafn og saltið komið í, skal taka hann ofan. Með honum er borin saftblanda eða mjólk, einnig steyttur sykur og kanel.

For the Icelandic language article (the text examples section). Ta! Max Naylor 18:06, 29 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

No problem, Máx Náýlór:

The butter is melted and the flour stirred into it (slowly but surely), until it is has blended with the butter. Then the milk is slowly poured into, and stirred constantly, so it doesn’t get lumpy. When the milk has blended well and the porridge has become steady and salt has been added, it should be taken off. It is served with a (fruit) juice mixture or milk, even stirred sugar and cinnamon.

Damn, that proved to be harder than I anticipated. I don't really know anything about cooking so I'm not sure what was being talked about. It's some recipe, sounds foul. The words inside () can be skipped, it won't change the meaning, but including them makes it a bit more describing, I guess. I'm sure people are gonna go "Oh! That's terrible translated, I'll have to do it myself!" but one (with my knowledge) can only do one's best. Enjoy. --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson 03:45, 30 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Paint.NET edit

Please keep in mind that the Wikipedia pages are not forums. That said, in answer to your question, it is a great program, but whether or not it is professional is a matter of opinion- and it's absolutely free, so it doesn't cost you anything to form your own. If you have any other questions about the program, consider asking them at [1]. Hope that helped! =David(talk)(contribs) 12:14, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I wasn't asking for myself but for a field called "Description" in the article "Comparison of raster graphics editors". I would have added something like "Professional image editor and graphics creation tool", this is actually about Adobe Photoshop which everybody knows is pro. And if Paint.NET is too I would have written the same or something similar. --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson 12:26, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Oh, my apologies! We've had several people post installation questions and such on the talk page, and I thought that's what this was. Again, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding!
As for your question, I think it would be best to leave "professional" off. It's really meant to be easily accessible before powerful; besides, the moment you put it on there, a {{fact}} tagger would pounce. Thanks for the consideration, though! =David(talk)(contribs) 17:45, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bot help edit

{{helpme}} I am looking for a Wikimedian who can help me with bot problems. I am trying to program a bot for other Wikimedia-projects with C# but I need some assistance with the setup, and general advice would be well appreciated. The helper would have to be familiar with the OS Windows XP, be ready to communicate via MSN and, of course, have some understanding of C#.

It would also be quite cool if bots were also categorised by programming language. --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson 21:11, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Have you read through Wikipedia:Creating a bot and Wikipedia:Bot requests (and its talk page)? The first one has lots of good general advice (so it seems to me, who has never created a bot), and the second and its archives might help to give you an idea of what sort of bots people have made. Perhaps some of the people there will be able to help you.
I'm not sure you'll get much help with the {{helpme}} template, since bot writing is a fairly specialized topic. I'd try asking on one of the bot pages here on wikipedia, or possibly a post to the help desk might attract attention from someone who knows more and can help you.
I hope you find the help you're looking for. --Sopoforic 21:44, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I did read both those pages. My problem is with my CMD, which neither page covers. I just wanted someone to talk with via MSN to solve this and for future problems, like with development, should they occur. --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson 22:35, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
I see. I've only ever written programs that read from wikipedia, never edit it, so I probably can't help you, personally. I suspect that a nice, targeted question on either WP:BOTREQ or its talk page will find someone who can help, although I don't know whether anyone programs bots in C# specifically. --Sopoforic 23:39, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Icelandic National Police edit

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Icelandic National Police, and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: Icelandic Police. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally moving or duplicating content, please be sure you have followed the procedure at Wikipedia:Splitting by acknowledging the duplication of material in edit summary to preserve attribution history.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. Hi. Sorry to bother you, but I've come here because you're listed at Wikipedia:Translators available#Icelandic-to-English, and we need someone who knows the language. Basically, we've got this article listed at WP:PNT, Jóna Kristjana, and we don't know what it means. My instinct says its probably not notable, and the section in the middle appears to be a hymn of some sort. If you have a free minute could you please take a look and give us the gist of it. He has recently become homosexual and is now in a relationship with a half-Arab man named Haduk Rook Nachek. Haduk Rook likes reading and cuddling with his boyfriend." I'm pretty sure it's nothing important. --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson (talk) 11:49, 25 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Össur edit

Hello there. Just to let you know that I've proposed the article Össur be moved back to Ossur. I've started a discussion at Talk:Össur. Regards, Gr1st (talk) 13:26, 29 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

On a related note, I noticed that you initially moved the page to Össur hf (which must have been an accident) and then copied the contents of the page to its current location at Össur. There is a significant problem with moving pages via copy-paste, in that it separates the article from its edit history. This is a problem because the terms of the Creative Commons license requires all contributors be given credit for their work—this is accomplished through the intact edit history. By severing the two, the CC license has in effect been invalidated, which is of course a problem. Please always remember to move pages with the move button, and if there's a redirect blocking a move, simply list it at Wikipedia:Requested moves so an admin can move it for you. I've already fixed this move, so don't worry about it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. Regards, Parsecboy (talk) 14:56, 30 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

You are now a Reviewer edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:38, 19 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of IHF men's world rankings edit

A tag has been placed on IHF men's world rankings, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

no such ranking exists

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Speedy deletion nomination of Músíktilraunir edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Músíktilraunir requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted.
