Portals

What are portals? "Doorways to knowledge." Wikipedia's coverage of subjects can be extensive (mathematics, for example, is covered by tens of thousands of articles on Wikipedia). Portals are an alternative entry to a subject (besides its main article), and to that subject's coverage in the encyclopedia, in a way similar to how the Main Page provides sample fare from Wikipedia as a whole.

Portals may include features such as Selected article sections, Selected image, news, points of interest (Did you know?, Anniversaries), and links to related Wikimedia. Portals are more diverse than the Main page, and may include features such as panoramic banners, slide shows, category trees, topics lists, and whatever else portal designers can come up with.

A secondary purpose of portals is to provide bridges between reading and editing, and between the encyclopedia and the Wikipedia community. They may provide links to the related WikiProjects, Wikipedia's Reference desk, and so on. Portals are a hybrid between encyclopedia pages and project pages, and occupy their own special namespace, the Portal namespace. Therefore, all portal titles are preceded by the prefix "Portal:"

The list of all completed portals is Portal:Contents/Portals. A list of all portals, including those under construction, can be found at Category:All portals. The Portals WikiProject is dedicated to collaboratively building and maintaining portals, and further expanding on the Portal concept, such as with automated features, and is always looking for new participants.

However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. Hi Stapmoshun. You seem to have tagged the above file with {{db-author}} which you can do. FWIW, I believe my tagging of the file as replaceable fair use was appropriate. Since I did so, however, another editor has nominated the Commons photo of Hill for deletion per c:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Benny Hill.JPG. If the Commons file is deleted, then a non-free of Hill might be possible per item 10 of WP:NFCI as long as there's no reasonable expectation that another free equivalent cannot be created or found. Hill was a quite popular TV personality which means probably lots of photos were taken of him. As I posted at c:COM:VPC#Benny Hill Image, there may be other free images of him somewhere. I look and ask someone else to look as well, but perhaps you can try too. Ebay and similar sites are often a good place to check for old publicity photos which either never were marked with a copyright notice or whose copyright was not renewed. A non-free should be the final option, but it's OK when a free equivalent cannot be expected to be found. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:25, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

Hey Marchjuly, the photo I had put up was being disputed because I was told the image that was on display before was a free equivalent that did the job of showing Benny Hill's face well enough. However, the fact that a wax statue instead of an actual photograph is being used to showcase a person's image somehow bothers me. Nonetheless, I don't want to cause any copyright issues, so I deleted my picture and reverted the Benny Hill article back to the way it was before. Before uploading my image, I had searched Google far and wide for a free Benny Hill photo, but couldn't find any. I had emailed BBC asking if I could use a picture they had on an article, which was a brilliant photo really, a black and white photo of him in a kitchen when he was young. However, I haven't gotten a response from them. I put the image up and there was a warning underneath stating it would be taken down in two days, and I figured waiting was just delaying the inevitable. But I'm reading from you that the Commons photo might be taken down so I can put mine back up, is that correct? If so, I'd like to find a better picture; mine was a bit low quality. It might be best to see what happens with the Commons image first before uploading a new non-free images. While I kind of undersand your point about the wax statue, WP:NFCC#1 encourages us to use free equivalents whenever they can serve the same encyclopedic purpose, and the wax statue photo seems fine for primary identification; especially since the non-free you uploaded was basically the same pose of Hill in character. In some cases there might be better non-free photo which can possibly be used, but Wikipedia goes with the free equivalent if available if it suffices for identification. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:04, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

Your license won't work - it's not pre 1923, nor is it suitable for PD-no-renewal, as the date is likely to be in the automatic renewal era, and it will be in copyright (in UK) at URAA, so US copyright gets renewed to 95 years after publication....
