Request reason:

I am sorry for seeming to promote something. It is indead not my purpose. I just want to add links from enzyme pages to one of the world's most important enzyme information systems. BRENDA is a non-commercial publially funded scientific database. Please have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRENDA The links to BRENDA are not spam but complete the Wikipedia entries. Most of Wikipedia's entries on enzymes do already provide a link to BRENDA, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_dehydrogenase. I am just trying to link the other entries on enzymes to BRENDA. Please reconsider the blocking. I am happy to answer any further questions you might have.

Accept reason:

I appreciate the goal here, but you were giving undue prominence (apperance of promotion) to this one external resource. As you note, the infobox is the standard place for this sort of thing. It is supposed to happen automatically if there is an |EC_number= listed there (I don't know the details, there may be some other/additional trick for it too). How about adding those fields? As a bonus, readers actually see the EC number displayed, which is separately useful information.

Do you have some specific personal connection to BRENDA? I ask based on your username and editing interest (trying to avoid WP:COI-relationship/WP:ROLE-username problems going forward).

@DMacks: I am sorry, it is the second time I am "talking" to someone, don't know if it is the right way to answer. Yes, I am working with BRENDA. Is there a problem? I did not write anything new but did just complete existing entries. You are right about the infobox. You said that the link is supposed to happen automatically. Should I just add something like |EC_number 1.2.3.4= to the enzyme entries lacking the EC Number or the link to BRENDA? Should I change my username? Does it conflict an policies. I chose the username to show that I have a connection to BRENDA.Spl brenda (talk) 14:59, 3 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

That's a fine way to answer. There are some weird details of these infoboxes, which affects both how to pass the EC number and what links are created. I started a discusion about it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Molecular and Cell Biology#Infobox for enzyme vs protein.
Regarding your username, as long as this account is solely for you as a person ("spl" is some personal identifier of yours) and not shared with whoever else works there now or in the future, it's probably ok. You should declare your relationship on your userpage (User:Spl brenda) so that nobody thinks you are impersonating BRENDA (you legitimately are related to it) and to make sure you meet the disclosure requirement of a Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. @DMacks: In the German Wikipedia (where I created my account) I did write on my profile that I am BRENDA's webmaster. In the English version my user profile is empty. Do I have to create or maintain to versions of my account or is there a way to merge the accounts? Thanks a lot for helping me! Spl brenda (talk) 07:10, 4 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

BRENDA external links edit

External links normally go in an external links section. Also I just created a {{BRENDA}} template and an example of its use may be found here. The advantage of using templates is that if the format of the link changes, one only needs to change the template, not every article in which the external links is placed. Also apparently the BRENDA does not support secure links (https) which is not ideal. Can the BRENDA be modified so that it supports https? Boghog (talk) 21:49, 3 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

External links edit

A couple of things:

1) You will need to get consensus before adding 100s of links to a site you are associated with

2) If after consensus, these must go in an external links section

Spamming brenda-enzymes.org edit

You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you insert a spam link. Persistent spammers may have their websites blacklisted, preventing anyone from linking to them from all Wikimedia sites as well as potentially being penalized by search engines. Jytdog (talk) 01:13, 4 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

BRENDA is a high quality database (see for example this discussion), so links to it if done properly IMHO are OK, but the way you have gone about this is not OK. The proper way to have handled this is to first obtain consensus on the relevant project talk page, in this case WT:MCB. I also want to note that {{infobox enzyme}} generates a link to BRENDA, and in some cases (for example glycogenin), it would have been more appropriate to include this infobox instead of a separate external link.
