J. Clement Vaz

Hello Sphilbrick, I see that you've deleted a majority of my content on the above mentioned article for copyvio reasons. It is sad that you took this action without even having a talk page discussion with me as I was still "working on the article."

I myself hate copyvio and I knew there was a problem of copyright issue with it, I was about to start working on it this night itself. Can you revert your action so that I can fix it or atleast send me a copy version of the last revision ht me. I hope you'll look into this, considering the amount of time I've put into it.

Last but not the least I had also doubled checked the article for copyvio issues on Earwig's but found nothing, it probably detected a problem in the later stages of the article. ✠ Rejoy2003 ✠ (contact) 14:10, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

I'm sorry you are sad but your expectations are unrealistic.
Copy Patrol gets hundreds of reports every week, with only a handful of volunteers trying to drink from the fire hose. To add insult to injury, the volunteer who handles probably 50% of all reports is having health problems due to spending too much time dealing with this issue and needs to cut back. When it seems likely that an edit is a copyright problem, the process is not to open up a discussion first but to remove the potential problem and then have the discussion. You are free to propose modifications to the process but unless you can bring dozens of volunteers, I don't see how that could change.
I have temporarily restored the revisions I hid so you can recover subsequent edits which might not be problematic.
For obvious reasons I'm not going to quote the entire passage that was problematic, but the sentence that starts:
> At one stage in his career,
Should illustrate the problem.
Let me know if you disagree. S Philbrick(Talk) 14:53, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply, Please do check this link (Earwig's Copyvio detector) [1] regarding the same article. I usually rely heavily on this tool. There's no red mark anywhere, can I know why you still took the action despite it being green? ✠ Rejoy2003 ✠ (contact) 16:24, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
I'm very familiar with Earwig, as that is my primary tool when I'm working on CCI. However that tool is not used by Copy Patrol, which relies on iThenticate and one other tool whose name escapes me.
Does this link work for you?
https://api.ithenticate.com/en_us/dv/20220511?lang=en_us&o=95559679 S Philbrick(Talk) 17:12, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
Here's Earwig
49.7% overlap S Philbrick(Talk) 17:18, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
Yeah the link works, probably maybe because of my AP or NPP roles. Anyways I'll be working on this article, I hope you're okay with providing me 24 hours?
Not gonna lie, It's weird that an extensive search for Copyvio on Earwig gives around 2.9% overlap whereas the URL comparison you just showed me is something massive. ✠ Rejoy2003 ✠ (contact) 18:54, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
Certainly, I see that you are working on it, keep on Keepin' on. S Philbrick(Talk) 20:59, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
Just so you know, I had an arguably unfair advantage. You ran Earwig, presumably just asking it to look for matching material. I ran it but specifically listed the site identified by iThenticate. I can't tell you why iThenticate found that site and Earwig did not, but I can see it is plausible that their universes are not quite the same. S Philbrick(Talk) 21:02, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
I've cut down more than 10% of copyvio content and it seems to be okay for now as it says on Earwig's. Do have a check at [2] and if there's else I need to know, please do let me know. Thanks ✠ Rejoy2003 ✠ (contact) 22:11, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
Looks good, thanks S Philbrick(Talk) 01:01, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

Very speedy draft entry deletion

Hello Sphilbrick

I see that you marked an entry of mine for speedy deletion

Draft:San_Francisco_Ladies_Protection_and_Relief_Society at 13:27, 9 February 2023 (UTC).

Your request was acted up by Jimfbleak at 13:33, 9 February 2023. Unfortunately I was not able to correct things within the six minute timeframe.

Please have a look at User_talk:Jimfbleak#Request_to_restore_deleted_page where I provide an explanation and my intended actions upon the entry being undeleted.

There are many hours of effort already embodied in the entry that are not backed up elsewhere. Needless to say, I would be delighted to regain access to the content.

613 commandments

Hi I see you once reverted a list-are you able to create the list as a table with columns and sort capability?? I know it’s some fancy html script needed - I’m no coder - but that would be fab Riskit 4 a biskit (talk) 20:33, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Creating a list as a sortable table used to be a royal pain but it's now quite easy.
There is a big help entry Help:Table Which unfortunately was written before the visual editor introduced.
If I want to add a table to an article, I create it in Excel, then use the visual edit and copy and paste the contents. It usually works, but the help section I linked may help you if you need to do some fine-tuning. For example it won't automatically sort, but the help page will tell you how to fix it. R N Mauzo & Narayan Mauzo

Hello Sphilbrick, hope this message treats you well. If you can't remember me, we had reached to a consensus not too long ago regarding J. Clement Vaz for some copyvio content. Looks like I've been partially blocked on Wikipedia now.

Another admin has speedy deleted these two articles for being unambiguous copyright violations, which I don't believe is right. Could you check these two for me? I'm sure there must be some hasty decisions and these could be improved upon not directly deleted for 100% copyvio. ✠ Rejoy2003 ✠ (contact) 10:31, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

I don't believe I was involved in either of those two articles. I believe User:Moneytrees is the editor to contact. S Philbrick(Talk) 13:46, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
I'm just asking a third opinion, I'm aware which admin is to be contacted and I have. You can check their talk page as well. It's okay if you don't want to pry on this case, please say so. ✠ Rejoy2003 ✠ (contact) 14:00, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, some of the major contributors to copyright investigation are unavailable and I'm drowning, so I can't really look into it. I'm certain that Moneytrees will be helpful in explaining what's going on S Philbrick(Talk) 14:03, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

VRT ticket

Hi, Stephen, are you around at all? I was sent a copy of a rather important VRT ticket, but when I went to answer it, couldn't access it – it seems strange that I'd have been sent a copy if I'm not supposed to see it. Anyway, the number is #2023022210009368, and I think it deserves a speedy reply – it seems to be a follow-up of an earlier mail that's gone unanswered. If you're around, could you either answer it yourself, or give me the necessary permissions to do so? I'm in the middle of a major bereavement myself, and don't like to feel that we're adding to someone else's pain by failing to respond. Regards as always, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:52, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

Very sorry to hear about your situation, but while I'm around, I'm just barely around. I'm not a VRT agent, let that lapse a year or two or more ago. I simply can't get involved. There used to be a desk for this. S Philbrick(Talk) 22:09, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

Hello Sphilbrick, just a message concerning Talk:Víctor Gómez Bergés which I was trying to start but has been SALTED. Regarding revisions of LAPD Metro

In reference to https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=LAPD_Metropolitan_Division&diff=1141734904&oldid=1141732373

Hi @Sphilbrick,

How do I go about quoting something exactly from a citation without it being registered as "copyright"? I was able to obtain the .pdf report from the online LAPD site - https://www.lapdonline.org/newsroom/lapd-2021-year-end-review-use-of-force-report-nr22099ll/#:~:text=To%20view%20the%20complete%20report%2C%20please%20visit%20%3D%3E%20https%3A//lapdonlinestrgeacc.blob.core.usgovcloudapi.net/lapdonlinemedia/2022/04/2_2021%2DUOF%2DYER%2Dcompressed.pdf - does this still violate Wikipedia's copyright policy?

Thanks. 415 Mam (talk) 15:18, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

I'm going to link to an essay. I see that you are new so may not yet be familiar with distinctions between essays, guidelines and policies, so I'll just briefly mentioned that an essay is low on the pecking order and doesn't have the same force as a guideline or a policy, but this particular essay is reasonably well written and I think accepted by many editors, especially those involved in copyright issues.
Wikipedia:Quotations
The policy can be found here:
Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Quotations
I linked to the essay first because it's a little easier to read and, in my opinion, is consistent with the policy.
At a minimum, if you are going to quote the copyrighted source you must close the quoted material in quotation marks or use a blockquote template.
However it is not sufficient to cure a potential copyright issue by simply enclosing the material in quotes. There must be a legitimate reason for quoting the material as opposed to writing it in your own words.
Hope this helps. S Philbrick(Talk) 15:36, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
Gotcha.
Please would you be able to restore/privately send me a copy of my version so I can make amendments? There were things in there that weren't copied and I'd like to put them back in without having to re-write them all out again.
Thanks. 415 Mam (talk) 21:29, 26 February 2023 (UTC)
I temporarily restored the visibility so you can access it. S Philbrick(Talk) 13:21, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

"list of trichloroethylene-related incidents" deletion

The "copyrighted" material you said was taken from Wikipedia article for Trichloroethylene and therefore the content of the page I created was not copyrighted. I copied the text from Wikipedia itself. Saint concrete (talk) 16:46, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

I didn't say it was taken from Wikipedia. Copying from Wikipedia is acceptable although it must be done correctly. I said it came from this site. If that site copied from Wikipedia then they erred in asserting copyright. However, if you copy material from another Wikipedia article you need to provide attribution. See Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia for more information. If you follow the guidelines and provide the attribution as well as mentioning it in the edit summary then those of us that work on the thankless task of tracking down copyright violations will mark it as acceptable instead of removing it. Speedy deletion nomination of SITPA-IDEAS

Hello. The speedy-deleted article I had written had been translated from Spanish Wikipedia, where it had been written by me, based on information available at https://ideas.asturias.es website. Only some paragraphs were copied as they are. In any case, all of that website's content is licensed under a Creative Commons license (otherwise specified), as stated at https://ideas.asturias.es/en/preguntas-frecuentes ("Licenses" section), so there's no copyright infringement. So I'd like to ask for article's restoration, if possible. Thank you. MGeog2022 (talk) 20:52, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

I have restored the article but I think more information is needed.
I marked it as a potential copyright issue because the material closely resembled the material at this site. That's site has a clear statement of copyright at the bottom of the page
Copyright 2023 © Government of Principality of Asturias
I know you said it's a translation of the Spanish Wikipedia, but the English text is very close to the site that has added a Copyright notice to the bottom of the page. Please tell me why this does not constitute a copyright violation. One potential answer is that while that page clearly indicates a copyright notice, they may be something elsewhere that asserts there is really an acceptable Creative Common license applicable. I read the licensing site you identified, but that page states:
Where it is established that the documents published by the Government of the Principality of Asturias on this website, if not indicated otherwise, are published under the terms of the Creative Commons-Recognition (CC-by 4.0) license.
Why would it not be reasonable to assume that the statement at the bottom of the relevant page is indicating otherwise, in other words that some other pages may be subject to cc license but that specific page is not. If it is the intention of the copyright holder to mean that despite the clear copyright statement on the page, a message on a different page overrides that notice, this is extremely poor form. However, I need some confirmation that they really mean the page marked with a full copyright isn't subject to full copyright. I don't think that's an assumption that is fair to make without explicit statement. S Philbrick(Talk) 21:29, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much for restoring the article.
I will rewrite the problematic paragraphs with another words to avoid confusion.
I think that the copyright notice is not a conflict with Creative Commons license: a Creative Commons-licensed work, is copyrighted, but it's released under a license that allows re-use, so it shouldn't be seen as a contradiction.
MGeog2022 (talk) 21:36, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
Where it is established that the documents published by the Government of the Principality of Asturias on this website, if not indicated otherwise: : perhaps this means that Creative Commons licensing only applies to documents available at the website, and not the website itself. I've edited the article on English Wikipedia, so there shouldn't be any major coincidences with the site content now. I will also rewrite parts of the Spanish Wikipedia article over the few days, with the same purpose. MGeog2022 (talk) 22:24, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for looking into this, that makes me feel better. Glad to hear you will rewrite both the English and Spanish versions. S Philbrick(Talk) 23:50, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
@MGeog2022 and Sphilbrick: - If that is the interpretation of the license, then revision deletion will need to be applied to the earlier versions. The licensing statement could be made a lot clearer on the site. I suspect that there may be translation issues. In going through some of the pages on the site, the English language pages are not always 100% in English. -- Whpq (talk) 15:09, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
Done S Philbrick(Talk) 15:25, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
@Sphilbrick and @Whpq, then all seems to be OK now. Sorry for the work I caused, and thank you both :-) MGeog2022 (talk) 20:39, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Richard Cogdell draft

Hi. I am not sure if you saw my reasons for contesting the speedy deletion, but the material was from the citation for Cogdell's election from our website (I am a Director of the Royal Society). In the past we have used citation text without modification on articles about our Fellows. For example Wendy Hall. But I see the draft is now deleted. Can you advise? Thanks Point of Presencetalk 15:16, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

The material appeared to come from
this page
At the bottom of the page it clearly indicates:
Copyright © 2022 The Royal Society. All rights reserved
Can you explain why the clear copyright statement does not apply? S Philbrick(Talk) 16:58, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for replying. You are correct. As I say, this is from our website. But I am granting permission for its use in this wikipedia article. If you'd like me to email you from my Royal Society email address to formally grant permission, I am happy to do so. Just give me an email address. Alternatively please let me know how else to grant permission. If this is not acceptable, then it would be helpful if you could undelete to my userspace and I shall re-write the text. Best wishes. Point of Presencetalk 19:02, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
The process for granting permission can be found at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials S Philbrick(Talk) 20:48, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
Ok. In the meantime, can you please undelete the draft to my userspace to save me having to re-create the entire article? Thanks. Point of Presencetalk 23:43, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
  Done (emailed) S Philbrick(Talk) 15:59, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

I have now re-written the offending text, but I wasn't sure how to edit the title of the article to start his lastname with a capital 'C' - are you able to help with that? Thank you. Point of Presencetalk 14:07, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

Greetings and request

Greetings Sphilbrick! I see that some years ago you deleted/unmoved/moved Sussex Academic Press. As there are at least 1,000 pages (can't be bothered to keep counting...) here at Wikìpedia that reference publications by that publisher, am thinking of creating the corresponding page. Unless you have any objections on notability grounds [publishers]... No rush (it's not high on my list of priorities). Regards, --Technopat (talk) 11:40, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

I have no objections. S Philbrick(Talk) 12:36, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
