Proposed deletion of Replacing the ALP

The article Replacing the ALP has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable organisation. Web search returns no articles about it.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Speedy deletion nomination of Replacing the ALP

Hello Spacetrecker. I'm sorry but I had to delete the article you created, because it qualified for speedy deletion, as it did not assert why this particular organisation is important or significant. This does not mean that your contributions here are not welcome! It's just that Wikipedia has rules regarding what qualifies for inclusion: in Wikipedia's jargon, only things that are notable can have articles written about them. Re-Creating Replacing the ALP

Hi Spacetrecker, I've been following your discussion on User talk:Salvio giuliano about Replacing the ALP. I hope I can address some of your questions:

• You've asked to speak with an Australian representative. Editors around the world work on the English Wikipedia, and there is no formal "representative" of Wikipedia in Australia (at least of the kind you're looking for). But there are editors who live in or have a connection to Australia. I've seen your "Replacing the ALP" ads, so I guess I qualify!
• You've asked why the article about Replacing the ALP was deleted. As Salvio explained, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia which doesn't publish articles unless they have reliable sources. For Replacing the ALP at the moment, this means sources that are independent of the organisation, not advertising, and not forum-based. Generally, 1 or more sources are required, and 3 is considered good.

So far, I think RTALP is mentioned in:

• The Canberra Times Advertising
• The Riot ACT forum, which also doesn't have a wikipedia page
• Your own website and facebook and twitter pages
• The Political Sword in the comments section
• The 2CC facebook page, but you appear to have dropped off the bottom

So, currently, according to the Wikipedia definition, you have 0 out of 3 reliable sources. (I couldn't find a 2CC transcript.) This means that any Wikipedia article about RTALP has nothing independent to back it up. Since you started the article early, before it could be independently verified, Salvio removed it. This happens to a lot of articles, and it doesn't take much to get them back. Please don't be worried about it.

• The message about "importance or significance" is actually based on an objective policy - if you think Salvio has applied it incorrectly, you can apply for the article back at Wikipedia:Requests_for_undeletion. I understand it doesn't look good for your organisation, but this can be a temporary state that you can change as you are published in the media. But until you have reliable sources to back it up, if restored or re-created, the article would just go through a longer and more permanent deletion process.
• You said - "We also didn't have time, per wikipedia's deletion, to add more information about us so when we are reinstated we have much more to add." You have two options:

• you can ask Salvio, or another admin, to restore the deleted page to a userspace draft, at User:Spacetrecker/Replacing the ALP. It won't get deleted there if you add {{userspace draft}} to the top, and you can work on it until it contains enough independent references (3) to be moved back as an article.
• you can wait until you have 3 reliable sources, listing them here if you like, and then get an admin to restore the article and put them straight in.

Whatever happens, I hope your initial experience hasn't put you off editing Wikipedia. I'm sorry it didn't work out like you'd hoped. Sadly for you, we do discourage people from promoting their own organisations - in an objective encyclopedia, it's seen as a conflict of interest. I'd encourage you to read the COI policy, and ask about the alternatives to direct editing. Don't let it stop you from starting an article that you let others develop. But do be aware that once you're published, criticism of your organisation will end up in Wikipedia, and deleting it to preserve your reputation or "make the article more accurate" is seriously frowned upon.

Many established Australian political and lobby groups, such as the Australian Labor Party and the Australian Christian Lobby, have balanced and well-supported articles here. I'd be happy to help you join them, once you've become established in the media. twilsonb (talk) 12:56, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
