The FIVE pillars of Wikipedia edit

Allright.. the most important things that you have to remember while editing WP is the "Five Pillars of Wikipedia"

1) Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. This pillar tells us that WP should not be treated as a dictionary or something like a phonebook. It should include only articles about stuff worth encyclopedic value, and not everything that props up. Moreover, WP should not be used for advertising, criticism, or anything else.

2)Wikipedia has a neutral point of view. Information that is written on WP should not favor one side or project criticism at another. Articles should be written according to fact and without banking to one opinion. For your info: "Neutral Point of View" is commonly referred to as "NPOV" around WP.

3)Wikipedia consists of "free" content. Information written in WP will not be protected by ANY type of copyright laws. It is a FREE encyclopedia. Therefore, you need to be careful to mention about any copyrights of media files (eg pics) in their description boxes. AND any information taken from other websites, especially news sites ( who has the "All rights reserved" text on their website) should be referenced.

4)Respect between Wikipedians. Always be polite to fellow editors and avoid such things as edit wars :P. Issues between users about articles can be addressed peacefully through the user talk-pages :D. This is to say, if a user undo an edit you made, dont start an edit war against him :P, resolve it politely and respectfully. If that dosent work, report him. Just dont do anything stupid, cause that would count as vandalism and you could be suspended!

5)Wikipedia does NOT have strict laws. Articles on Wikipedia can be about anything (of interest). eg. Wikipedia does not have rules that prohibit a type of article. It dorsnt censor articles either. Dont hesitate to edit and make WP a better and a bigger place.

those are the 5 pillars of WP!! If you want more information: Wikipedia:Five pillars

Post any questions if you have any. i would be happy to help! Cheers, - ziansh | talk 15:19, 23 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Our first class edit

Hello, Zianish, this is our first class and in the first class I want to tell you that though I always try to manage to extract my time to edit in WP, but in most of the days I can't. You know I read in class 10 and my final exams are pretty near, but if any doubt arises within me, I'll inform you.
Anyway, now you'll have to solve some of my problems:

  • How can I get another user(without searching at the search bar) who can help me in developing an article?
  • How can I create DYK's?

That's it I won't trouble you now anymore. Oh, I copied this template from your user-page to decorate mine.

This user would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year 2011!

Allright edit

Can you clarify your questions? You want to request another user to help you develop an article?

And the DYKs.. you want to create ?

BTW.. how old are you?

Yes, I do want to create DYKs for display on the main page. And age is 16 yrs., but why does it bother you?--Soumit Banerjee (talk) 11:37, 24 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

DYK Nomination! edit

it dosent bother me. i was just curious as you said there weren't much difference between our ages. :) Im 14 btw, and Maldivian. I assume you are Indian?

Anyway, the process of nominating a "hook" for DYK is not all that hard. A "hook" is the phrase which you are nominating for DYK.

The rules of a DYK nomination:

  • 1) The article must be new - if its a new article, the article cannot be older than 5 days. however, old articles that have been updated to twice the size, by YOU in less than 5 days can also be nominated.
  • 2) Article has to be long enough - the article should have a minimum of 1500 characters (excluding infoboxes, tables, categories and references)
  • 3) Cited hook - the nominated hook must be in the article; preferably with references.
  • 4) NPOV
  • 5) Has to be within other policies of Wikipedia (such as Verifiability, Copyrights etc)

Process of Nomination:

  • 1) See if the hook is eligible (refer above).
  • 2) Go to DYK Nomination Page
  • 3) Go to the nomination templates in a new tab.
  • 4) Pick one of the six templates provided.
    • Option 1 - New Article that YOU made.
    • Option 2 - Revision that YOU made.
    • Option 3 - New Article that SOME ONE ELSE made .
    • Option 4 - Nomination has an image file.
    • Option 5 - Nomination has a sound file.
    • Option 6 - Nomination has a video file.

I recommend that use either 1,2,3 as the next three are rarely used and is more advanced.

  • 5) In the 'DYK Nominations Page', search for the date when YOU made the article; or when you started editing it. (Under current nominations)
  • 6) Click 'edit' and add the template to the very bottom of the page. DO NOT write any titles or anything. Just paste the template at the end, thats it. (WP converts it automatically to a different template)
  • 7) Fill in the template with 'article', 'hook', 'status', 'author', 'nominator' fields
    • Article- Name of the article
    • Hook- ... that (add your hook here) ?
    • Status- new or expanded. (refer to the rule#1 for this)
    • Author- who started the article
    • Nominator - you. (If you select Option#1, you don't need to write nominator, as the nominator is also the author)
  • 8) Click 'save' and wait. Admins will come and comment on the nomination and evaluate it. You can reply to the comments if you wish. They will evaluate and pick the ones that they think have value. :)

Thats it! Ask if you have any questions! Cheers, - ziansh | talk 08:47, 26 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hey Ziansh, I should think I've to give up the hope of making DYK's.--Soumit Banerjee (talk) 12:11, 26 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your suggestion was really helpful in creating a DYK. Article: Swami Shivananda. Thanks for help.--Soumit Banerjee (talk) 15:41, 6 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

AND edit

oh.. and regarding your other question... I dont think there is a procedure to request help from other uses to build an article. You can just request them to help you; by writing on their talk page... - ziansh | [[User_talk:|talk]] 08:59, 26 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Someting to tell you edit

Hello Ziansh, can you tell me how to create sub-pages in a user-page? I want to decorate my user-page, you know.
Well as you see Ziansh, you can talk to me like a friend, please do not feel shaky. I like to be addressed as a friend more than than that of an elder brother.
I should tell you this. Recently I've been searching for users who're unrecognized young talents. I want to coordinate with them about various matters. Goodbye --Soumit Banerjee (talk) 12:25, 26 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

How to create subpages! edit

What I do is write the name of the sub-page that I want to make, in the search button of WP. For example, I want to make a subpage called tester. In the search, I write User:Ziansh/tester. The search results will come up saying that there is no such user page. Click "Start the 'User:Ziansh/tester' page" and there you go.

BTW... thanks... I consider you a friend :). and back at you... you also are very free to talk to me about anything. :)

Cheers, - ziansh | talk 10:45, 27 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

I notice that a lot of contributions you have made are regarding the Indian film or music industry. is that where you have the most interest in?

Ive only been to India twice in my life... its quite unique from other places, many different worlds altogether. India is also the closest neighbour to my country... heard of the Maldives?

Nope, I'm more interested in trekking and travelling. It's true that I created the articles of two singers, one actress, etc. but didn't you notice that I also started an article on Satopanth Tal, Chandrabadani_Devi, Gomukh(previously, with another username Soumit10), and if you see more you'll find that I've contributed much in the article Satopanth Glacier. Which subject attracts your interest?
Oh, about your question. I regard that question of yours is a total useless. Why wouldn't I know my nearest neighbouring country Maldives...I love Maldives for its natural beauty...it was also a British colony wasn't it? After I grow older I wish I'll visit your dearest country.--Soumit Banerjee (talk) 12:13, 27 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Oh... I am also very interested in geography :D. and I also contribute through the aviation field like airlines and airports and stuff... Sorry, I didnt realize that those were places... i had time to only skim through your contributions, and I coudnt classify whether the articles were people or places, cause i cant understand any indian languages..

AND.. yes, we were once a british colony.. just like India. Britain used to rule most of the world then right? xD. I went to see some of the ruins from the brit days in Bangalore.. I personally think that they are one of the most beautiful places in the city... just like the rest of the city :D - ziansh | talk 22:15, 27 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Regarding your block edit

Please read this for more info :D Wikipedia:BP - ziansh | talk 09:23, 30 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well as you see I did do neither of the things you suspect me doing. I've pondered over the matter again and again but still I couldn't make it out. I feel very sad that this obnoxious thing had happened to me, and ruined my trust in WP. Thank you Ziansh for checking this page regularly.--Soumit Banerjee (talk) 07:27, 31 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

About WP edit

Hello Ziansh, I notice in the pages of many editors(like you) that they have reviewer rights on WP. Now, though I've read the page on this topic, but I want to know that whether I can be a reviewer. Reading the article I'm very wishing to become a reviewer.--Soumit Banerjee (talk) 07:45, 31 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
